though the algorithm x265 is using to compress video may reduce image quality when the source is some movie with grainy textures and dark shadows, it's ultimately depends on your converter settings.
If you'll choose placebo preset for conversion, it will take a lot of time, but you won't probably see the difference between the source and the output.

If you use MPC-HC without a codec pack (i.e. using EVR) it has fucked up colours compared to VLC (changing YBR conversion to allow 0-255 instead of 16-235 by default).
If you don't believe me, watch Stargate SG-1 in mpchc alongside vlc with the default codec packs. It's all fucking PURPLE in MPC-HC when it should be BLUE.
Obviously, if you use MPC-HC with madvr, this doesn't happen, but my point is mpc-hc has problems out the box.
