I don't think the comparison to King Arthur is very good. Yeah, they both kill each-other but Mordred was Arthur's own son, it was his fault Mordred existed at all, Arthur kills his own son, he only dies from his wounds because he foolishly leaves his scabbard behind which would have otherwise healed him and he loses the Kingdom. When he dies the united Britain dies with him. King Arthur fucks up, Superman doesn't fuck up he does what he has to do.

Think about it. Marvel didn't get put on the map with Spiderman, they did it with Iron Man. A relatively low budget film about a comic book character barely anyone cared about. The movie didn't have any pressure on it, so they just focused on making something that felt faithful to the comics. In return it built up their brand as a whole because people went "Hey, if this guy is cool, what else have I missed out on?"
I don't think Batman vs. Superman is what DC needs to succeed. I think Shazam and Aquaman are what DC needs to succeed.
