Canon thread, The Daemons edition, what does /who/ think of this excellent story?
>>
It's okay.
>>
>>67746284
Well, it is a big improvement over Colony in Space
>>
>>67746358
Not even close.
>>
>>67746388
m8, colony was boring shit, this was good
>>
>>67746516
Nah, Daemons is boring shit with one of the most hilariously shit endings in classic Who. Colony was well-paced and interesting, I already talked about why I love it at length in the CoS thread but no one replied :^(. Daemons has some good things going for it, it's really atmospheric in places and the magic vs science things is something I guess, even if it's a bit cliche, but it's nowhere near Colony in Space tier imho.
>>

I've never understood why it was supposed to be SO AMAZING and such a classic desu senpai
>>
>>67746516

Also (I'm rewatching it right now) it has that shitty "aerodynamics can't explain how bees fly" meme, one of my least favorite maymays of all time. But I realize that's a pretty autistic thing to be upset about.
>>
>>67746802
I think its one of those ones where its status got established when the videos weren't out yet and no one had actually seen it, they were just going on received wisdom. Kind of like that book that declared The Gunfighters "worst... story... ev-er!".
>>
>>67746982
wasn't that only explained relatively recently?
>>
>>67747058
I dunno, maybe. If so then I guess it gets a pass.

I saw in the archives someone asking about the Heart of the Tardis, angry god thing. Now, the line about "a Time Lord would have become a vengeful god" comes from Utopia, and the next episode, Sound of Drums, has the Master reasoning out that the Doctor destroyed Gallifrey and saying "You must have been like God." So, it seems that, at least at that point, the implication was that the Heart of the Tardis is how the Doctor ended the Time War.
>>
>>67753173
The Moment is mentioned in End Of Time though.
>>
>>67753374
That was two years later. I'm just identifying where it seems like Davies started.

A lot of Series 1 changes pretty dramatically in hindsight when you know how it was originally written, with the Daleks instead being the Toclafane.

Romana's probably the best off companion right now if she didn't end up kicking the bucket in the Time War. Narvin looks set to win the Romana-bowl.

At least we got Theatre of War adapted by BF and he's appearing in Enemy Lines (albeit not Collection!Braxiatel). But no more Doctor meeting Brax.

And it's not like the Doctor would even want to meet Braxiatel anyway after all the shitflinging with the Deindum, the fact he took over Maximediras by force and convincing them to genocide the Mim, killed a human version of himself, tried to arrange it so that Bernice got raped and basically rewrote her entire timeline.

It's Boku Dake ga Inai Machi AKA Erased. Show about a serial killer with a few extremely soft time travel shenanigans (so it's a little bit different from your Doctor Who formula.) It's not as good as the GOAT episodes like Heaven Sent or Chimes of Midnight which I would give a 10/10 but it's pretty solid plotwise. Ending is a bit disappointing so I'd give it 7/10.

What determined the number of splinters and where and when they appeared relative to the doctor's timeline? How was it possible that clara could, without fail, defeat the GI every single time he played a trick?

well, how did she defeat the Great Intelligence in the Snowman-special? Which makes me wonder, was the Great Intelligence in that christmas special meant to be an echo? Would certainly provide an explanation for why the dates don't match up with the Great Intelligence original story, The Abominable Snowmen, but I don't think that was the intention because then the Dr. Simeon stuff doesn't match up anymore.
And was there an echo of the Great Intelligence in the Dalek-Asylum as well?
>>
>>67766809
But I mean the twist was that there's nothing inherently special about her (at least in a scifi sense) and she was just a regular person who jumped into a time thing.
>>
>>67766894
>Would certainly provide an explanation for why the dates don't match up with the Great Intelligence original story, The Abominable Snowmen
The Snowmen is a prequel to the Troughton stories.
>>
>>67766735
Perhaps splintering was not very kind to his power.
>>
>>67766400
Lets ask Moffat in DWM. He usually gives funny answers to stuff like that. Like that one time he made fun of the War Doctors name. I've emailed in a few before but mine was never used. I wonder how they pick which ones to use.
>>
>>67766923
the dates don't match up though. The Snowmen takes place in victorian england, which means late 19th century. The Abominable Snowmen takes place forty years before Web of Fear, so about the 1920s-1930s. However, it is also stated that the Great Intelligence has been in the mountains possessing Padmasambhava for 200-300 years building yeti-robots.
>>
>>67767108
>However, it is also stated that the Great Intelligence has been in the mountains possessing Padmasambhava for 200-300 years building yeti-robots.
Oh yeah. Well fug. Moffat probably figured the percentage of people who would actually go back and watch the reconstructions of The Abominable Snowmen was so low it wouldn't matter.
>>
>>67766104
i watch Sigurasimi Moon Devil XU

>>
>>67766735
I don't think it's so much that she defeated him, as she ended up inadvertently being in the right place at the right time to alter whatever the GI had changed. For most of the Doctor's adventures she was no more than some passerby who might be in the background of an episode, it just goes to show that the slightest person can make all the difference. Just by inserting a naff old villain into the sidelines of these past stories, they go from win states to fail states.

But you can't interpret it according to logical phenomena anyway. Like the TARDIS the time stream works in narratives, it puts the GI and Clara into the narratives in a way that 'fits' rather than just dumping them on location.
Which is a pretty way of saying Moffat half assed it because he was running out of time/ideas and had to tease War by the last scene

pretty much this. You could have used any old villain and the story wouldn't have been any different. Davros, the Master, hell even the Candy Man.

Also I think this is kind hypocritical consider the Doctor spends the whole story defending science and doing science stuff. Like it's cool for him to be a scientist, but we shouldn't let these dumbass humans have any scientific knowledge, they'll only blow themselves up probably (and the "probably" is baffling. Shouldn't the Doctor already know whether an apocalyptic nuclear war will happen?).

There probably won't be an Ask Chibnall. RTD's monthly thing was Production Notes, and for a while that's what Moffat did too. Ask Moffat didn't start until 2013, just before series 7b aired.

why do the BBC feel the need to shit all over the Time Lords and their realm whenever they display them on screen? Gallifrey looks like a shitty clone of Mars with a giant snowglobe in it and the Time Lords look like a bunch of LARPing retards in Fancy Dress.

To do them justice, with how they're built up, you simply cannot have them on screen unless you have the art direction and production values to match. Because they look like a joke.

low budget problems,
The only way to do this would to have a series with multiple episodes set on Gallifrey, they could afford to spend some dough on a few sets they could re-use. We know what happened the last time they did something like that.

Because muh orange skies quote from The Sensorites. The globe is obviously to keep plebs out of the Time Lord city, which fits with their image pretty well imo.

>why do the BBC feel the need to shit all over the Time Lords and their realm whenever they display them on screen?
because that's literally their entire purpose in the new series. Whenever they are mentioned or shown the Doctor dominates them. He wipes them out, then wipes them out again and then saves them, and all of that single-handedly. Last year there were people who kept saying that the Time Lords would return and then send the Doctor on missions and put him on trial like they did in the classic series and I was seriously perplexed because after everything the Doctor did I simply couldn't see him go back to such an underdog-status.

This.
To portray the Time Lords as living up to the hype is to miss the point of them (at least post Deadly Assassin), which is that for all their pomp and power, they are the miserable and bureaucratic alternative to the Doctor's mercurial lifestyle. Glamorising them as some epic militaristic force of elder gods, or even giving them a decent budget, would be giving in to a decidedly troublesome set of values.
Doctor Who, intentionally or otherwise, is far better suited to depicting these sorts of things as faintly ridiculous. Bring on the fancy dress.
>>
>>67771417
I think the Time Lords as a cosmic force is a very interesting idea too, but only if balanced with their pathetic, stupid qualities. Lawrence Miles does this really well - they engineered the fundamental rules of the universe and commit all sorts of atrocities against races they deem a threat, but they also piss themselves in fear when someone shows up with a spooky skellington outfit because it reminds them of death.

The narrative can be as morally opposed or neutral towards them as it likes, but the mere act of making them an impressive spectacle for the audience - and therefore indulging the viewer pleasure of seeing such a spectacle - gives them (and what they represent) a kind of legitimacy. "They might be bad but crikey aren't they cool?"
>>
>>67772741
Nevermind it was. I was thinking of filming shots instead of how the episode looked.

No, and in some of the barn scenes in previous stories. There were blue skies. They definitely corrected this in Moffat's time.

Fiction is full of characters and groups that are both bad and interesting, even cool.
Should every character that is morally wrong automatically be made bland and ineffectual? That would be terrible. Not to mention very, very boring.
