I much prefer Robert Holmes's interpretation that the Second Doctor always worked for the Time Lords and that they basically put him on trial for the crimes they made him do in the first place. It doesn't fit in the continuity but it's a cool concept and by Robert Holmes so it gets a pass.
If Paul McGann died, how would you feel about another McGann taking over as 8? Kinda like a Hurndall only with some resemblance to the actor he's replacing.
