WB is very keen on directing their films with in-house talent and are generally very good with going about it. The problem is they didn't get their first choice when Nolan approached Affleck to direct Man of Steel. Which would be a very solid get obviously since both have similar tastes stylistically. Snyder is kinda the exact opposite in that regards which makes his hiring seem like a desperation move by WB. Nolan wouldn't direct nor would Affleck.
Snyder also did not heed the advice of Nolan when he was told NOT to have Superman kill. And now we're at this point where this shitfest is grimdark with no purpose because WB panicked and went with mr video game director.

I'd take these reviews a lot more seriously if they actually cited reasons beyond "Too serious, not enough Marvel inspiration".
The legitimate complaints I've heard, though, appear to be pretty in-line with what I expected. Too much CGI/fights (not a negative IMO, but to some I can see how it is), pacing issues, and some confusing editing decisions.
Overall, from what I've heard, it seems like a film I'll enjoy immensely, but isn't for everybody. It's not the 42% bomb that the critics are suggesting.
