>>
>>64597971
Yeah it's weird, he barely had any lines too but he conveyed so much. His expression when he realized one of his men wasn't gonna make it got to me, and this isn't the kind of movie you're supposed to sympathize with the villain.
>>
>>64598055
That particular scene was very well done. And also emphasized that they were mercenaries and didn't really care about the guy's pissing contest.
>>

The two firefights in Blackhat was better than the entirety of Sicario

Blackhat's screenplay might be cliché but fuck if it isn't refreshing to see a filmmaker SHOWING rather than telling, and having its characters reveal themselves and develop through visual actions, focusing on small gestures or looks without needing to explicitly state what is happening, and highlighting the film's themes through the way it's shot, the digital texture, the lighting, the music, etc.

Just compare the use of establishing shots; when Villeneuve shoots the Mexican desert from a helicopter, it's just because it looks nice, when Mann shoots an imposing neon-lit skyscraper in the night, it carries all the existential depth of his characters.

Mann's subjects are much more fundamental and timelessly relevant. Sicario is "important" and relevant only to the extent that its subjects, the Drug War and the US involvement in it, are relevant, which is obviously only over the course of a few decades.

The struggles of Mann's characters are applicable to a far greater time scale than a few decades.

It's just another thriller, competently done, with an "important" subject. Many other filmmakers could've made just as good a movie about the same thing, because it's not that hard.
>>
>>64600057
>can't refute the facts

>>64600007
Blackhat was literally about the issues of the modern world, transcending mere borders which are so important in Sicario's narrative. The criminality in Blackhat would make the dealers in Sicario blush.

>>64600000
Sicario is more of a meme than anything. That movie isn't even good.

Actually Mann does, but it's not subtle at all or warranted, like in Heat.
>>
>>64600377
Most of them. Heat, Miami Vice, Collateral, and Thief are essential. Manhunter too but I'm not too into that one. Last of the Mohicans and The Insider are amazing but they are departures from his other stuff. Only watch Ali and Public Enemies if you're a diehard fan of the others. Stay away from The Keep.
>>
>>64598820
>>64599698
Sicario just has a more traditional, safer narrative style and more traditional safer dialogue and characterization. This pretty much alone means most people will prefer it to more abstract films. /tv/ is way to pleb to deviate from this trend. It's just a more traditional movie than Blackhat that ticks most viewers' superficial requirements, with the elements I already mentioned, plus superficially good-looking photography, solid acting, and an interesting subject.

>Mann shows, doesn't need to tell; Just compare the use of establishing shots; when Villeneuve shoots the Mexican desert from a helicopter, it's just because it looks nice, when Mann shoots an imposing neon-lit skyscraper in the night, it carries all the existential depth of his characters.

This is why Villenueve is just a competent director, following in Nolan's and Fincher's paths. There's little meaning in the aesthetically pleasing photography, as in Nolan and Fincher's movies (although Nolan's often don't even look good superficially). It looks pretty, but doesn't feed the characterization or themes. There are 10s of 1000s of people who can arrange pretty shots, so it's almost completely unremarkable.
>>
>>64600168
>I'm going to ask you a question, and you don't have to answer if you don't want to. Who did you lose on 9-11

And then they just sit there in silence while the camera stays on them. If a scene like that was in Sicario one of the characters would be talking in retarded action movie metaphors.

>Hurr your not a wolf and I am etc

People hook up in way less time than what you're suggesting, which is the two of them being instantly in love. He IS stopping the mercenaries, but the pacing of the movie isn't one shootout after the next, so of course there are quiet moments. Barret and Jenson should've started shooting when they were behind the mercenaries instead of driving into their line of fire, and Jenson should've taken cover.

I like both films but Sicario is way better. Except for the writing.

And it's getting guild nominations left and right kek

not really.

Why the fuck did a hacker look like that? And why did they keep bringing him to everything like gunfights and nuclear reactors?

The last scene implies that the CIA's aggressive actions didn't have any serious effect on curbing cartel violence.

we lose

Mann's not an asshole intent on ruining his career. All of Mann's movies are flops but they still give him funding for a reason.

yes it's always tom cruise. but who else would have had the dedication to learn gun control this good?
johnny depp looked like a fucking weasel and as they instructed him to the tommy gunn for public enemy.
cruise actually see's the character driven aspect to learn this particular skillset.

is there anything based Tom can't do?
>>
>>64601669
it does when its a subsonic round like a .45
>>
>>64609188
because tom cruise is a looney bin. if he wasn't he'd be fine acting like all the other slobs. being crazy is a secret power that makes great actors timeless.

tl;dr, you can't bruise the Cruise, son.
>>
>>64601993
Or he's left eye dominant.

and you will never see such preparation ever used in such a way to inspire awe in we the plebeians or will ever again bask in such creativity that brought all of these elements together to begin with or be partnered to, albeit a growing excitement that takes root when announcements are made that such awesomeness will be taken to the screen; what a time though, what an obvious patrician film, made by a patrician director and starring a patrician made scientist all of which happened at a time when being patrician was acceptable and expected. we will never see their kind again.

Toro was fucking badass
He didn't even torture the guy, I mean sure he killed the wife and kids, but he didn't let the guy linger on and have it sink in for him that he just killed his family
He literally just shot him a few seconds after, showing he wasn't a beta revenge-wanting guy, he was a total badass alpha, that just killed him while he was in a state of shock
The last thing the guy feels in his life is shock and confusion
