LEGO does a lot of R&D for a toy company.
LEGO bricks are not manufactured in the third world; they are made in Denmark, Hungary, Czech Republic and Mexico.
To snap together and come apart properly, their bricks have be manufactured to very small tolerances.
Bricks are made of a specialized ABS plastic with desirable hardness/flexibility and chemical stability, which I understand is more expensive than the plastics commonly used to make toys.
