Why do people automatically label an old film a 'classic masterpiece' just because it's old?
>>
Because they saw it and recognized its artistic quality. Unlike you who just wanted to shitpost.
>>
>>64157480
Because people are drones who regurgitate what society tells them to think

The 70s were the height of American Cinema you pleb.
>>
>>64157662
Please, if anything Taxi Driver is TOO "entertainment" inflected. It ends in a fucking shoot out. Speaking as someone who is exactly like Travis in real life, the third act is complete hollywood bullshit sensationalism.
>>
>>64157480

Why wouldn't you call a movie a classic masterpiece if you're posting about it on the Internet 40 years after it came out.
>>

>10s: Entertaining movies coming out every year
>70s: Even the good movies are boring.

70s have low fucking standards and people were easily impressed. If even a mid tier flick from today like The Hateful Eight or the Revenant was released back then it would be treated as a great "classic" like the godfather or the exorcist.

>>
>>64157938
It's all popcorn trash. Only reason films like the godfather got put on a pedestal was that there were fewer movies released in general so there was less competition and the above average movies looked more important because the release schedule wasn't as crowded. We have a surplus of great movies now to the point that it's hard to even get excited by the prospect of seeing a masterpiece. Not like the 70s when any time a movie over a 7/10 happened you had to spend the next 30 years jerking it off.

Taxi Driver was one of the most profitable films of the 70s. It is an accessible yet very stylish film, mostly appreciated by entry level cinephiles.
>>
>>64158067
Fight Club
The Departed
Whiplash
TDK trilogy
LOTR trilogy
Drive

Christopher Nolan
Steven Spielberg
David Fincher
Quentin Tatantino

Not even my list. Obvious a guy posting bait to discredit me, but I will say that every movie named is better than anything made in the 70s outside of Whiplash which is reddit trash.
>>

The Departed is a lot of fun

Thank you for making your opinions officially worthless. Now leave /tv/ and never return.
>>
>>64158249
On literally no level.
Departed has better acting, better cinematography, better editing, better plot, better soundtrack, more culturally influential, better mise en scene, more evocative title.

If Nolan had went back in a time machine and released TDKR in the 70s it would be remembered today the same way as apocalypse now and Sorceror. And I don't even think it's a good movie.

pfft.
>>
>>64158434
I sinerely believe every word I've typed. I also believe that anybody who disagrees is completely deluded. Take away all the memes and cultural canonization. Show The Departed and Taxi Driver to a group of aliens. Literally none of them will be left thinking that Taxi Driver was the better movie in any regard.
>but I was raised to believe that Taxi Driver is "Important" and the 70s was the great era of cinema because it was when my dad and all the dad aged critics grew up.

Literally no different to people who get conditioned into believing in God.

>>
>>64158627
Mean Streets makes Taxi Driver look good. Completely irrelevent piece of shit. If you think it's good because of what it "popularized" rather than it's quality by today's standards then you may as well be saying the beatles are good.

Never be afraid to destroy the past. Nothing is sacred. As soon as the rest of film catches up and it starts to fail to impress just throw it on the fucking trash heap.
>>
>>6415839
The only films that were considered instant classics back then was stuff like The Godfather, Jaws and etc that were unanimously acclaimed and groundbreaking films in many aspects but you can never tell what movies will be liked or not in the future. Stuff like F for Fake was barely seen back then yet it is an essential piece of cinema today.

>>64158346
Clearly, because Nam Vets go crazy and plot to kill politicians and bring girls to pornos.

It's sad how movies that become so influential seem to lose that sense of originality when works come after it and are clearly inspired by the source material.

I was watching Aliens the other day and I was like shit....I've seen all this a million times before in shittier movies
>>
I fucking hate millenials.

Aliens is just a plain piece of shit. Always was. Alien is a masterpiece. Aliens is just the capeshit cash in made to appeal to the juvenile.

Every fedora baby has seen Casablanca, Taxi Driver and Citizen Kane. They may as well be video games for how artistically entry level they are.

You need to get your head out of your ass and take a real look at the world. In the real world, fedoras watch action movies and capeshit. They don't watch 1940s romantic dramas.
>>
>>64159731
Yes they have. Retard. I will fucking murder you. If I had seen them by age 18 then it counts as entry level fedoracore.

They watch it for the brand recognition. To kid themselves into thinking they're real cinephiles. I'd go as far to say that the only people watching Casablanca in 2015 are IMDB fedora children and the over 70s.
