>RIVER: Funny thing is, this means you've always known how I was going to die. All the time we've been together, you knew I was coming here. The last time I saw you, the real you, the future you, I mean, you turned up on my doorstep, with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Darillium to see the Singing Towers. What a night that was. The Towers sang, and you cried.
>RIVER: You wouldn't tell me why, but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the library. You even gave me your screwdriver. That should have been a clue.
>That should have been a clue.

>River: Some of them suggest that... the very last night we spend together is at the Singing Towers of Darillium. That wouldn't be true, would it?

>River: .. because I want you to know that if this is the last night, I expect you to find a way round it.

I like it when some series incorporate a little monster of the week type stuff, like Dexter for example. The Boundless Sea: A great, fast-paced way to kick off the boxset. Fairly light on the continuity which makes it a great standalone episode, with a plotline somewhat reminiscent of The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances in an ancient archaeological tomb. Despite being a lot of fun, hits on some pretty strong emotional beats towards the end with some of River's lines which are pretty heavy. The resolution is a bit contrived and the way it leads into the rest of the boxset is a tad confusing so 8.5/10
Marvellous Party: If the last episode was The Empty Child for River, this is her Mummy on the Orient Express. Android waitresses, murders and champagne. A pretty light-hearted romp which is nice considering what's to come, plus it's great to just hear River in the moment solving mysteries by herself. A solid 8/10
Signs: Absolutely freaking gobsmacking. Easily the best audio story I've heard from Big Finish in a good couple of years. Almost like the audio continuity's answer to Heaven Sent but with even more of a surreal, Twin Peaks-esque dream quality to it. Even with the twists revealed at the end - and they are whoppers - it's still unclear at some points what is reality and fantasy in this mindbender. Creepy, funny, poignant and heartbreaking, this is a straight 10/10
Rulers of the Universe:The Doctor sort of takes on the lead role in this story, with a wearied Eight Doctor who's probably approaching the end of his life giving Paul McGann the chance to show some real fury at the injustices of the world. River is basically trapped on a spaceship the whole time which feels a bit of a waste, but oh well. Her reaction upon realising which Doctor Bertie has trapped is absolutely heartbreaking - she knows how optimistic and naive Eight is, even now. The resolution and indeed the villains of the boxset-wide arc are underwhelming but not wholly uninteresting. 6/10

he appears a lot throughout,
there's not too much lore to know, really hes a recurring character thats with the military and helps the Doctor.
I would recommend Battlefield, his last appearance (with the 7th Doctor). or nearly any of the third Doctor stories for his status quo, hes in most of those.
>>64121743
The Invasion's his first major episode -- 10 part UNIT episode in the Second Doctor's era. A lot of it's missing, though there are animated reconstructions.
Doctor Who and the Silurians is seven parts and has a lot of him being at odds with the Doctor.
Inferno is great cos you've got Evil Brig. I'll say no more than that -- the episode's better discovered for yourself.
The Daemons is pretty damn good for him tooor so I've heard, I was never allowed to watch it as a kid and never did get round to it
He spends most of The Three Doctors being sarcastic and it's amazing.
Then there's Terror of the Zygons, Mawdryn Undead and Battlefield as Brig episodes post-UNIT era.

Series 6 was the first to be released in Part 1 and Part 2 form, echoing the split run, and was still followed by a complete box set some time later. Same goes for 7 IIRC. I don't think it happened to 8 though.

Damn, I must have been the only person in the UK to be surprised by that
Now I don't really want to go back and watch Sleep No More
Damn
What about an episode where the story is actually being written as it unfolds by someone and the Doctor has to break out of the writing?
Does anyone have the bingo sheet for the Christmas special? I'm curious if we got a bingo.
>>64124260
They already did that and it's called Red Dwarf: Back To Earth
>>64124256

Red Dwarf X was okay though.

Suddenly I want to rewatch the first part of Series 8, I haven't rewatched it.
The new writers are shit. I fucking got it. That's why I didn't like 8B and 9.
Mel a qt
>>64124390
Fucking annoying
>>64124385
Matthieson is not shit. Neither is Dollard.
Even Harness was kinda Ok for the most part, even though he does seem to keep inserting jarring morality in his story.
Please Moffat. Bring back Chibnall, Cross, Thompson and all the others from Series 5. Just do it.
>>64124454
Steve Thompson did Time Heist last year
>>64124454
>Chibnall
Fuck no
>>64124260
It's not exactly what you're thinking of, but I STRONGLY recommend you watch The Mind Robber.
>>64124449
The Girl Who Died was disappointing. I'll need more from Dollard to be convinced. Harness is a hack, it's Moffat who wrote the last 15 minutes of Inversion.
>>64124454
This is an absolutely prime bait
>>64124522
>it's Moffat who wrote the last 15 minutes of Inversion.
So it wasn't Harness who wrote absurd morality play this time? My opinion of him has grown.

Gr8 b8 m8
>>64124454
Chibnall is not that good, but he can write a good action story. Or even a SoL story, like Power of Three.
Cross wrote Hide, that was also pretty good.
>>64124485
I know and it was a good episode. He has to come back.
>>64124514
Fuck off at least his episodes were fun. None of Series 9 was except Husbands.
>>64124553
No it isn't.
>>64124554
Invasion was shit and anything apart from the speech in Inversion was meh.
Notice how everyone started to hate Doctor Who after Chris Chibnall stopped writing episodes.
>>64124656
Fuck off Chris.
>>64124614
You say it like "Just stand down and keep living under constant fear of exposure while your host will be complacently believing she can kill you all in a push of a button" was a good speech.
>>64124522
Why was the Girl Who Died disappointing to you?
>>64124614
Yeah if you like mediocre rubbish then sure his episodes were "fun". Lets bring back Stephen Greenhorn too!
>>64124522
>it's Moffat who wrote the last 15 minutes of Inversion.
So Harness wrote all the Clara vs Bonnie scenes, GOAT Basil reveal & scene in the shop? Hack where?
>>64124656
everybody always hated Doctor Who, it's a universal rule
we are /who/
>>64124614
>No it isn't.
Yes it is. "Chibnall, Cross, Thompson", it's like a laundry list of writers no-one gives a fuck about.
reminder
>>64124608
I agree but he's a comedy writer which Doctor Who seriously lacked this year. I would have taken a Chibnall script over Sleep No More.
Cross also wrote Akhaten which was good too.
>>64124706
No but it's what people remember of these episodes.
>>64124718
Wasn't as good as MOTOE, didn't know where to place itself between comedy and serious drama, downer ending that makes no sense,...

>>64124852
I literally never wanted any edge/darkness in Doctor Who but I know it can always be funny so it has to find a good balance between fun and dark episodes, which Series 4, 5 and 7 succeeded. Series 9 was no fun allowed, there's not a single comedic episode.
>>64124783
They've been gone long enough and they actually write stories that are good in some parts (fun, emotion,...). They're not shit all around like Gatiss is.

Sometimes I wonder, if Thompson was able to do the idea he was really passionate about, would he have produced something that wasn't so lame?

Episode 8-9: Neutral
Episode 10: Dark
Episode 11: Romp
Episode 12-13: Dark but funny
This is the ideal layout of a series.
>>64123188
Pretty much. The partial releases are for people who just want the episodes now, kids, or folks who don't want to pay for the whole set.
>>64125108
The difference there is that Moffat doesn't actually write a prequel to Genesis of the Daleks. He makes up a new event in Davros' past (Davros is already a big figure in series history anyway) and has the story pivot on that instead. The connection to Genesis is mostly just thematic.
>>64125007
something like that should be saved for a bigger budget, its one of those things that really have to impress
>>64125213
Yeah, which pretty much supports my point that writing a prequel to a 30 year old episode is a bad idea

Series 9 wasn't the ideal series. The closest to this were Series 4 and 5.
12th is GOAT
Why is keeping Doctor Who from getting a proper budget?
I'm tired of these claustrophobic settings, there is so much room for creativity, but all of it is ruined by budget issues . . .
>>64125356
the BBC
>>64125356
I have good news for you. Next series will be done by BBC Studios funded by all the money Doctor who makes meaning its budget is gonna blow up like the universe in Series 5.

>>64125415
Yes but that cash goes back to fund everything and everyone at the BBC, not just Doctor Who. Until next year.
So did anyone here actually have feels for the ending of the episode? 12 doesn't put on the waterworks like other Doctors but you can feel the emotion behind his eyes. Despite some inconsistencies I thought the final scenes were great.

>I'm tired of these claustrophobic settings
Claustrophobic settings are good for having characters say and do things to each other, which has always been what Doctor Who is good at. Huge battles on sweeping vistas will never be its fortƩ.
Go through a list of the greatest Doctor Who scenes and see how many of them are just characters talking in an unimpressively-sized room/set.

I would like someone to identify one distinctive aspect about the monsters from that episode other than 'they are made of dust'.
Sarah Dollard: "I'm actually writing another episode for next series. It will involve pirates in a space nebula... made of clouds! It's gonna be a funny episode, well, couldn't very well write another serious episode after Face the Raven, could I? It's great because I'm gonna write for two new companions - whoops, I've already said too much!"

He accidentally lands on Starkiller Base and works to disable it once he figures out what it does. He runs into Kylo Ren and gives him a big speech about how he's a tiny, weak child in a mask playing monster. He thinks the storm troopers are ridiculous and likens the First Order to Daleks or Cybermen. He's also secondarily trying to figure out what the Force REALLY is and discovers it's some ancient alien technology and not actually mystical or magical in any way.

That's not what straw man means. A straw man is when you take a position you disagree with (example: "It's fine for Doctor Who to be bleak and scary") and exaggerate it absurdly (example: "Doctor Who shouldn't be fun!") so that it can be easily pushed over, a bit like making a dummy out of straw.

I honestly am surprised every year by how Moffat and the others get creative about new Dalek stories.
