Just finished being Murrican and watching The Husbands of River Song

well fuck that was sad and funny at the same time

how was that then

what have we checked off the bingo thing

the alterations to the title sequence were well placed, definitely an improvement on Last Christmas

music was based as always thanks to Marigold

the new screwdriver barely showed up at all which is disappointing - good to see the sunglasses are still here

we're not getting Series 10 next year are we

Did not like how Moffat retconned Last Night and made River's final years with 12 instead of 11. 11 was her doctor.
>>
>>64098872
Moffat said Jamie already came in with a great idea and that he has two new writers writing for the show that will "make your brain explode" if he told you. Stuff is happening. Were just not getting it next year most likely. I think they want to get it on earlier like the episode today was.
>>
>>64098921
they mentioned Last Night near the end don't you remember River mentioned the two Doctors

Matt pls go

>>
>>64098921
Before watching I would have maybe agreed, but 12 is a more mature and melancholy Doctor and I think it kind of fits. Same man anyway, unlike 10 it's still a Doctor who knows her properly.
>>
>>64098785
isn't river death? what? she died like a million years ago.

how can they be forever happy when forever and time doesn't exist to them, why does river still shows up, i need a tv to watch doctor, last time i watch him was the 2013 event.

I just finished it, I really liked it. I mean the trailer looked like it would be an abomination but it really was very enjoyable.

>good to see the sunglasses are still here
Agreed. I think the only reason they were used in this episode was for the convenience of not blowing the Doctor's cover too early because the screwdriver would kind of give it away. I hope they can find a reason to keep using them next series though.
>>
>>64099013
>>
>>64099013
They don't actually live happily "ever after", in fact the episode makes a point of stressing that they don't have forever.

River has shown up again because she and the Doctor always meet out of order, but this time Moffat tried to provide some closure on the whole thing.
>>
on a scale of The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe to A Christmas Carol, how do we rank this

also it was nice to see they didn't waste Matt Lucas although they literally wasted Greg Davies' head
>>
>>64099019
I don't think you understand what that anon was saying. In Last Night there were two 11's, in this episode River mentions that encounter and saying he canceled at the last minute. Last Night wasn't retconned.

I think River was used well, her scene talking about the Doctor was so great it was the first time I actually felt like there was a real connection with them instead of just a forced love interest like she had been with 11.

Also I kind of hoped they had some kind of flashback to the Library, instead we just have River explain it. Also, she now knows it was the last thing they will do apparently, which is the one thing I thought was handled poorly in this episode. She got that epiphany at the end of the Library episodes, her just realizing it at the very end despite their conversation on that date doesn't make much sense.
>>
>>64099980

The brown people are perhaps more hilarious from a historical perspective.

At least RTD for all his faults was willing to confront the issue of "how will Martha be treated as a black woman in the 1600s" in that Shakespeare episode rather than just putting them for brownie points.

Cause I'm sure that's what minorities expect to see in Medieval Europe when they watch Doctor Who. People who aren't white.

I could maybe buy that onlookers assumed Martha was the Doctor's slave/melanin-enriched concubine which is probably why she didn't immediately get shit thrown at her.

I get that they don't wanna make episodes explaining stuff about race cause it "might" huwt feewings of perfectly reasonable minorities watching at home that I'm sure understand England was much whiter back then, but just don't put them there if you really don't wanna confront the issue.

I just refuse to believe there's a black or Indian person somewhere watching a historical Doctor Who episode and complaining about the lack of Chinese people walking by in the background in 900's Anglo-Saxon England.

>The Doctor lies

>>64101996

yeah he did, just a bit more generally lighthearted. bill shakespeare keeps calling her 'delicious blackamoor lady', 'Ethiop girl', 'swarth', 'Queen of Afric'. There's also the scene at the start where she voices the fear that she'll be carted off as a slave. The Doctor points out there was actually an African population present in London at the time (though small), and this is historically accurate (mostly the families of resident members of West African merchants and traders, though around 1599 loads of black slaves had been freed from Spanish ships so there was a higher than average number of them in London). It's for show-not-tell convenience that two of those Africans happen to be walking in front of them, but I don't really mind because it's not like every 3rd character is black. They missed a trick by not referencing Othello, however.

The episode where Martha's race is best handled in a historical context without it being A) cringeworthy or B) unnecessarily on-the-nose are in Human Nature. Because Paul is such a good writer (and Davies a good script editor) the issue of Martha's race is used to both show how isolated she is in this time and place and also show how biased certain characters are (also work as character-establishment moments for the bullies). There's when pre-alien Baines asks her how she can tell if anything's clean 'With hands like those', there's when Nurse Redfern claims that she can't be training to be a doctor, not just because she's a skivvy and a woman, but also because of her colour, and there's the moment where Martha is trying to alert John Smith of danger and turn him back into the Doctor but the watch is missing and Smith assumes the reason she's acting as though the whole situation is imminently real is because of 'cultural differences' leading her to misunderstand the fictional nature of his diary. That episode did a good job of it, I think.

Assuming that Christmas is at approximately Darillium's Winter Solstice (as I believe we can from the Doctor's monologue in A Christmas Carol), and assuming the Singing Towers are at a longitude similar to London's (as I'm sure Moffat did), a day on Darillium lasts 36 earth years. So if the next reservation was on Christmas 4 Darillium years later, 52560 earth years passed until the Doctor's regeneration. And the same hostess was working without aging a day. Bravo Moffat.

Alternatively, the non-autistic explanation that they just use standard earth-years everywhere. This does however conflict with the Christmas Carol monologue about how humans always celebrate Christmas in the deep of winter.

>>
>>64102676
They say specifically Christmas Day four years later. Were the days longer than the years than every day would have to be Christmas for this to be feasible.

I think the explanation is humans just took Earth years with them throughout the universe.

>RIVER: Funny thing is, this means you've always known how I was going to die. All the time we've been together, you knew I was coming here. The Towers sang, and you cried.

I'm pretty sure that during Heaven Sent, when the Doctor sees the harder-than-diamond wall with 'Home' engraved in it, he scans it with the sonic glasses. It's quite possible that said scan revealed the indentations from the prior Doctor's punches (possibly DNA as well, as it looks to be the only room that doesn't get reset after every shifting of the castle) and let him realize what he needed to do.

But the cloning machine could only revive him from the last saved copy, which was shortly after he got stuck in the confessional dial in the first place, which explains why it doesn't give him the memories of the prior Doctors that did all the punching.

But finding out it took you literal billions of years to punch through a not!diamond wall with probably trillions of copies of you, and it was set up by the Time Lords on Gallifrey, I'd be pretty pissed too.

Can river regenerate again? I can't remember...

Also, I don't really get the 'this is our last night together' shit. Why would they never meet again when they both care for each other. I'm glad to be rid of her, but in universe it makes no sense.

WE GOT FUCKING BINGO
MERRY CHRISTMAS /WHO/

Christmissy
>>
I enjoyed it, I like River Song. Alex Kingston is a 10/10 milf
>>
>>64107780
Because that's not how time travel works. They ran into each other on complete accident.
>>
>>64107025
he's already moped

besides the TARDIS was trying to cheer him up at the beginning, with the antlers and all, probably with taking him to see River too

wasn't expecting to enjoy that episode but I enjoyed that episode

nice to see /who/ enjoyed it too
>>
>>64100804
Yes. In Silence, she says the reason one astronaut keeps his helmet on is "I don't fancy you (unlike the others)." One of the others is a woman. Also, doesn't she seduce Cleopatra before impersonating her?
>>
>>64107780
>Can river regenerate again? I can't remember...
nope, used up all her juice, gave it to the doc to heal him that one time
>>
>>64107926
Cleopatra had been dead for a hundred years by the time that episode took place.
>>
So do we assume River goes to the library once these 24 years are up?
>>
>>64107953
Just did a search, remembered something about her saying Cleopatra was a pushover
and yup
>Hallucinogenic lipstick. Works wonders on President Kennedy. And Cleopatra was a real pushover.
This is from Wedding of River Song though
>>
>>64107984
Once she's filled up her diary. Though 24 years should probably do that.
Probably a bit more archaeology too, then the library just happens.
>>
>>64099602
I find Missy both ugly and attractive.
>>
>>64101860
And then follows 11 around as a hologram while he goes to Trenzalore and ignores her.
>>
>>64108048
I want her and River to fight over the Doctor. Would be amusing television.
>>
Ausfag here just finished the episode, thought it was pretty good for a Christmas special
what did /who/ think of the episode?
>>
>>64108106
The problem being is how Master/Missy has tried to kill the Dr and humans for a very long time.
>>
>>64098785
Well that was fucking awful aside from a few scenes and a massively stupid retcon. It pretty much completely diminishes whatever the fuck 11 had with River to being pointless and makes no sense with River's comments in several key episodes. Not to mention the Doctor nearly fucking DIED on his final regeneration before giving her the screwdriver which means he almost allowed his own personal history to be rewritten and his own first meeting with her wouldn't have happened.

And the entire episode until the last 15 minutes is spent with River not knowing he's the Doctor despite it being painfully clear who he is which makes River look like the biggest fucking moron around. Bravo Moffat.

>what did /who/ think of the episode?

/who/ actually enjoyed it, which is really saying something because most people expected it to be shit because river
>>
>>64108175
Low expectations probably helped.
>>
overnight ratings 5.77 million

lowest ratings for a Xmas special ever
>>
>>64108184
True, I went into it expecting shite and for the first minutes it was that but then it had hilarious moments like 12 pretending to be surprised by the TARDIS and Kingston looking surprisingly hot (for once).

I wouldn't say I loved it but taken at face value it was probably more enjoyable than the ashildr episodes from S9
>>
>>64108243

Are you memeing or is there a source?
That's disappointing
>>
>>64108147
River tried to kill the doctor once.
>>
>>64108175

entirely possible, however I find that that for some people if you're going into something cynical and expecting it to be shit then you'll find a way to maintain that stance (see TFA)
>>
>>64108243
Ratings for everything are getting lower every year. That's about the same ratings the X Factor gets on average these days, and that's one of the most watched shows in the country.
>>
>>64108243
to be fair all the christmas stuff was low this year

What has happened to TV ratings in the UK in general? Has there been such an immense cultural shift that just about nobody cares about live TV viewing anymore?

I'm not a brit but the most viewed program on christmas day only getting 6.9M viewers seems a little unprecedented

I'm a little surprised the queen's message isn't in the top 20, does nobody care about her there either?
>>
>>64108350
>making Doctor Who the 7th most watched programme of the day, just above EastEnders.
It beat EastEnders m8

also ratings always go up when they're finalised
especially at christmas
look at this

http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/doctor-who-series-8-ratings-accumulator-66394.htm
>Last Christmas 6.34m (overnight) 8.28m (final) 9.62m (L+7) AI 82
>>
>>64108382
yeah and this was still one of the lowest among a low bunch
>>
>>64108407
>What has happened to TV ratings in the UK in general? Has there been such an immense cultural shift that just about nobody cares about live TV viewing anymore?
This is basically it. It's Netflix and iPlayer and all that. Technological shift as well as cultural.

And no. No one cares about the Queen's speech.
>>
>>64108407
Streaming services have gotten really popular this year.
>>
>>64108413
EastEnders actually had competition in its timeslot

this shows that an earlier time slot is not going to gain back the lost viewers
>>
I hope the next episode has Vasta, Jenny, and Strax.
>>
>>64108435
>No one cares about the Queen's speech.

ausfag here, my mum always makes us watch the queen's message every christmas day
I like to humour her
>>
>>64108464

>>
>>64108475
Well, no one in the UK cares about the Queen's speech, at least.
>>
Anyone listened to Big Finish's newly released River audios? Considering buying them now, but not sure how much a mess they'll make of her.
>>
>>64108490

she was brought up by a fanatical royalist mother, she's more casual about it but even her siblings make fun of it

It's certainly not common in australia for people to watch it
>>
>>64104559
The first line is about her death. The other is about seeing the Doctor.
>>
>>64108510
I can't even fathom why one would want to listen to River for 2 hours

Who was River's second wife? Cleopatra? Bernice Summerfield? The Doctor?
>>
>>64104559
Devil's advocate here

>you turned up on my doorstep
could be considered a figure of speech

>with a new haircut
quip about his new regeneration much the same as kate did

>You wouldn't tell me why, but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the library
This still works. Knowing it's the last time they'll see each other and knowing she's about to die aren't inherently the same thing. And the doctor didn't tell her why, she had a theory which he wouldn't confirm or deny

>You even gave me your screwdriver
>your screwdriver
oops moffat

>That should have been a clue.
Even if river knew they wouldn't see each other again, that doesn't mean she knew she was about to die

What I'd really be questioning is why river wasn't surprised to see the doctor after their last farewell. Perhaps she thought the doctor found a way around it

Well she could be referring to the Tenth Doctor there with the second "your"? She'd seen Ten's screwdriver in the episode before that point.

She met Jim the Fish with 11.
>>
>>64108752

River's sonic is a derivative of 10's design-wise and that was probably the intentional implication alongside the 'your' at the time, but 10's sonic was destroyed in Eleventh Hour. Maybe headcanon lore could be he kept the remains of that one and rebuilt/modified it

Also is it just me or did they just use one of the toys of her sonic in this episode, repainted to look new? It looked pretty plastic-y although it's been years since I've seen the original prop in Library

quote specific dialogue moments with 11 that contradict what we was

>your outlier opinion

>>
>>64109145
11 was certain he was going to die on Trenzalore with no more regenerations. Without giving River the screwdriver that 10 used to save her to the Library. Having it be 12 instead is a shit retcon that makes no sense. There is no reason he wouldn't have done it as 11 if he believed he was going to die. It's a huge fucking paradox.
