Kylo has a lot of raw power, but he's learned how to fight without ever encountering a real challenge to his power or having to fight against a properly trained Jedi (even Rey gave him a run for his money when she dug deep and starting connecting to the Force).
He's all about show and flash and intimidation. That's what the blaster bolt stop was for. He could've just deflected it with his lightsaber, but halting it in midair looks cooler, and he knows it.

clearly gifted, clearly powerful in the force, but they never gave any hint at his proficiency in saber combat. they show him after slaughtering padwans while having the Knights there, then just a few up-close murders of unarmed non-combatants.
he is clearly early in his training, and I think in the next movie we find out Rei had some training as a child, then it was shielded from her own memory so she could blend in as a non-Jedi
