if this was on regular tv or cable supported by commercials, i would guarantee this show would be cancelled. however premium pay cable channels like Cinemax/HBO have different standards because they dont depend on advertising, so it may be renewed for another season.
>>63812036
Why would it be cancelled
>>63812149
if nobody watches a TV show, advertisers wont pay for commercials. for pay cable channels like Cinemax (who is owned by HBO), other considerations like critical acclaim often is taken into account.
>>63812036
then why does HBO always pull the plug on shows that have great critical acclaim like Enlightned or Deadwood?

I really doubt they will. With Algie being eyefucked, and Thack most likely dead, they don't really have as much to work with.
But, Bertie taking over as head surgeon, Algie as their psychologist, the city dictating the course of the hospital, barrow dying of radiation poisoning after losing everything from a whore and Henry conniving the Showalters out of their fortune could work.
>>63812149

this mother fucker
That was intense, the revelations. That moment of clarity when bleeding out.
We still might get a season 3, but Clive Owen sounds like he is out and maybe Soderbergh as well.
http://variety.com/2015/tv/news/the-knick-season-3-cinemax-clive-owen-steven-soderbergh-1201662770/
Well one thing's for sure that people calling this SJW trash were thoroughly BTFO. The progressive young money millionaire is evil enough to kill his own father and sister (and gets away with it), Lucy gives up her career to be a do nothing wife to that same man, genius black doctor is relegated to a career in psychology, while white power mcgee travels the world teaching the new hotness eugenics with his new perfect wife.
What a ride.
Soderbergh is a mad man

>>63816148
thats a stretch
>>63818400
Literally no point in watching without Thackery, that man was the driving focus of the show. Bertie is a cool dude but he's not as interesting as Thackery and I hate the spook.
Not only that but what would it be about? Eduards is moving on, Lucy is getting married to Henry, Cornelia went to shitpost town, Algernon is probably fucking off to make a nig hospital, Barrow either has cancer or syphilis and his whore wife will leave him with the money he idiotically gave her. All that's left is Bertie and he doesn't have anything interesting about him
>>63818801
Could do a time jump to say, 1920. Maybe you get an all new cast of characters. If Soderbergh is out maybe you hire an A-list director to do a two season arc like he did. There are tons of possibilities.
>>63818898
I would like to see Thackery and the knick getting insanely wounded soldiers during WW1. I could see him doing crazy reconstructive surgery.
>>63818898
The unique aspect of the knick is that it takes place during the turn of the century, where medical knowledge is greatly advanced but there's still a lot that many don't know. By the 20s, we know all of the different blood types, about the harmful effects of x-ray modification, syphilis has been cured, ect. It would be just another medical drama
>>63818801
bertie could start snorting adrenaline
>>63818962
Thackery would probably be dead by the 1920s, if he didn't die in season finale that is
>>63818962
Yeah I was thinking how the show could explore the aftermath of WW1. It sounds like Clive Owen is done though. He said he only signed on for a 2 season arc.
>>63818898
Well it would be nice to see a show set during WWI, it's a time period American producers don't use often enough but what decent director could you attach to it?
Soderbergh was more than just a director for the Knick, he was a producer as well, that thing was practically a labor of love for him with all the attention to detail he gave it.
I'd like to see bertie basically replace thack
>>63819305
>end of season 3
>Bertie snorts cocaine
>>63819414
>end of seasons four
>Bertie performs brain surgery on himself and dies
>Algie replaces him
>>63819620
>Algie
And I stop watching.
I was a little disappointed how easily Cornelia just gave up the chase even though she had no problem telling the cops on her father when she though he was guilty. It's also funny how she goes from loving darky to being willing to drop everything at just like that over a threat from her brother without even inviting the spook to come with her.
Revealing the Cleary was the reason Hariett was arrested really just shits all over the last positive thing in the show and I thought that was stupid.
Bertie goes from trying to do things his own way, to just being another face in the background and the show continues to go out of it's way to paint Edwards as EVIL cause he doesn't like negros or degenerates.
I'd say the only storyline properly resolved was Barrow's

At least he got the operation of the twins as a last victory, and got to burn out in a spectacle rather than silently fade away.
>>63815375
i was never more angry when they just cut away after the adrenaline shot. I really fucking hate cliffhangers, especially when that might be the last episode.
Did they ruin Cleary?
http://strawpoll.me/6306676
Everyone ended up miserable except for the psychopath and the whores. So shitty.
>>63822083
Yes from me.
All those apparent moments of rugged but spontaneous niceness coming from him when he stood by Harry were just him manipulating her all along.
All their interactions just leave a bitter aftertaste now.
Whose office was Edwards visiting? Thack's?
Was that a noose on his desk?
>>63811422
The abdominal aorta is nothing to mess around with. It'll bleed half the blood in your body in less than a minute. It's a big chance that he's dead.
>>63823456
Those were the sailing knots that Gallagher made Thackery make when he had him on his boat. It's likely it was Thackery's because it had his notes in it and you can see it has a dedication to Abby.
Nothing implies he's dead, Edwards seeing Thackery's last patient could very well be because he's recovering and unable to do so himself but it's also easy to assume he's dead because Edwards would have no reason to go through Thack's belongings.
>>63822580

http://variety.com/2015/tv/news/the-knick-season-3-cinemax-clive-owen-steven-soderbergh-1201662770/
>>63826572
I said in earlier threads there wasn't much in terms of plot to sustain a third series, now withThack goneI reckon it's unlikely.
>>63826879
Two seasons simply wasn't enough. I really wish it could have gone on longer.
>>63819974
1. Fair point.
2. You mean the best twist the show had? Cleary's motive seemed inevitable in hindsight.
3. It is unfortunate that Bertie wasn't really a main character here, but he got a good arc earlier.
And Gallanger gets more than enough positive attributes--he genuinely cared for his wife as long as any sane man could. The fact that a profound racist being portrayed as bad on TV upsets you says more about you than the show.
>>63826756
The only option is a time skip with an all new cast because there's nothing left to work with for the original cast.
>>63822083
They made him the most interesting character in terms of ethical conflict.
10/10 show
2/10 board, 0/10 these days.
>>63823456
Of course it was a noose. It's a reference to his predecessor –who also offed himself.
>>63826756
they should kill Thank mid season 3 if there's one, Bertie taking over and slut nurse becoming one of the first female doctor
I just now got home, downloading it atm.
Is Gallinger still based? Thats all i want to know.
>>63819974
Neely's arc this season was a bit undercooked compared to her role in the first season, but the devastation she experienced made her saying fuck everything seem reasonable. If you think the Cleary twist was stupid then you don't really understand the show. Bertie's arc was over after he left and returned to The Knick as a man. And you are crazy if you think the only storyline resolved was Barrow's.
>>63828005
If by based you mean evangelically racist, then yes, absolutely based.
>>63828154
based it is then
>>63821110
>>63821209
>>63825033
I think the cut immediately after Bertie plunged the needle in to his heart hinted at the fact that it probably worked and brought Thack back to life, probably only momentarily. The beauty of this is that this would probably be the greatest medical discovery that we've seen on the show, and although he did it indirectly Thack's final act still propelled medicine into the future, which was his intention all along.
It's pretty incredible how much happens in a single episode of this show without it feeling rushed.
Great episode btw, probably one of my favorites ever out of any show I've watched. I just hope they let it end here as I don't think it would be very good without Thack.
2x10 best scenes:
1. Cleary's confession
2. 'This is all we are'
3. Staircase showdown
Worst scenes:
1. Junia and Hermie hamming it up
>>63828154
Go away reddit.
>>63828296
It's all about pace and tone. Knick is the king of slow-burn TV
>>63828343
Actually, scratch that. This was the best scene
>>63828343
>>63828584
They were all the best scenes. That's what makes the show so great. I don't know how you couldn't like Junia and Barrow's scenes either.
>>63828725
Didn't fit. The actor playing Junia is too cheesy.
>>63818536
I don't think so, I thought I've been grasping at straws until Cleary's confession scene. It was directly evocative of Utopia's soundtrack, and while it may just be a happy coincidence I think there's too many stylistic similarities between the two shows for it to be simply that.
>>63828774
Junia was just as cheesy as she's always been, and her juxtaposition with Cornelia was poignant and crucial as well as being hilarious.
You now realise Algie gets a happy ending after all, having discovered a new career path in psychiatry
>>63829141
>>63829141
I like Algernon, he gets a lot of hate here. Also Opal went nowhere, they made her out to be trouble, but there was no payoff
>>63829141
Is going from being on the cutting edge of your field to starting at square one in an area that we still have little to no grasp on today a happy ending?
>Gallengher takes care of Hitler's injuries during WWI and teaches him the wonders of eugenics in season 3
Maybe it's a good thing this show ended already.
>>63829212
Opal's arc was strange after the way she was built up, but you could argue the payoff to her arc was her confrontation with the Captain and serviced the illustration that he was a genuinely decent person (one of the most important aspects of the season methinks).
>>63829332
I think that line coupled with the abrupt start to the frenetic score of the last surgery scene was one of the best punchlines this show has done. Almost tops the heroin reveal.
<--- Let's give credit to one of the show's best performances
People who ride off happy
Gallengher:Shacking up with this wife's sister and off to a lucrative career teaching eugenics(this triggers the liberal)
Cleary: No one's the wiser to his scheme and Harriet has given in to him.
Lucy: Successfully seduced Henry and has a future as kept wife of a wealthy business man
Henry: Successfully killed his father, collected insurance from the hospital fire, and his business dealings have paid off. Scared his sister off so his crimes will never be known. Has Lucy's coke pussy
Everyone else was severely shit on.
>>63829792
Lucy getting chained to a complete psychopath while thinking she has the upper hand is not a happy ending. Bertie also got a happy ending even though it occurred halfway through the season (and ignoring the fact that his mentor and friend is gone). I'd argue Barrow got a happy ending too, having the cop apologize to him is probably his proudest moment and what he has been striving for the whole time. Also even though I wouldn't call it a happy ending Neely managed to escape a life that would have killed her either slowly or possibly quickly.
>>63830094
Barrow signed everything over to a hooah
he's so fucked
>>63830171
Not only that but it's revealed he's possibly suffering from stage 2 syphilis.
>>63830094
The only bright spot for Bertie was Janine, otherwise he's probably dealt with some of the worst shit out of everyone in the show. His mother died on his operating table, his mentor and idol is gone and he's alone in the Knick as Edward and Gallengher are moving on. Bertie has had anything but a happy ending.
>>63826434
time stamp? or an estimate at least?
>>63830394
Those were deterministic radiation effects from x-ray exposure.
>>63830094
>Lucy getting chained to a complete psychopath
>implying she hasn't gone full-Lady MacBeth in that relationship
Lucy became as ruthless and cutthroat as anyone could become. She's right at home with Henry.
he probably lived. hes probably gonna be all fucked up though and hurt next season though
>>63830987
M8 its over hes not coming back from this...
>>63829792
Borty the wise rode off pretty happy as well. If Thack had kept on living he would have corrupted his pure heart.
Don't really care about what happens to any of the other characters, except Cleary who deserves eternal torture in the deepest pits of hell, the rat-hearted coward
>>63830490
You are forgetting his season long arc of leaving the Knick, becoming his own man, gaining the respect of his father, and deciding his true career path should be innovating and not becoming complacent.
>>63831009
my wild theory. is that the dosage of adrenline he got really cut off blood flow to his intestine. and that really slowed down the bleeding. he was able to pull through but now he's tommy wiseau weirdo.
>>63830943
She thinks she is conning and trapping him when in reality it's the other way around. Ironically, Neely was correct when she said Lucy was way out of her depth.
>>63831217
I think Thacks story has pretty much concluded. Keeping him alive might ruin it.
>>63824931
12/10 filename
>>63831295
how could the show go on without him.
>>63831361
Thats the thing it might not since most character arcs have been concluded.
The best show on currently, I'm surprised it's not got a much larger fan base.
The production, script and acting is some of the best I've seen.
>>63831361
I'd be happy if the show is following the growth of the Eugenics movement and watching Birdy and Algie grow in their own directions.
New people could join the show.
>>63815375
>Bertie wears iconic white shoes
>Thack for the first time wears black shoes
it's like poetry, it rhymes.
>>63830987
I wanted to believe the adrenaline worked but the podcast says it all. Pulp Fiction has lied to you, shooting adrenaline into someone going into cardiac arrest won't revive them.
>>63831452
It came on Friday nights
Most people don't have premium cable
There was little advertising outside of the Cinemax network.
It really helped that Soderbergh was an expert bean counter and able to do more with less.
>>63831536
If I'm not mistaken, Bertie and Gallinger have been shown wearing the white shoes before.
>>63831698
I've only seen Christenson and Thackery with them. They were sort of their trademark, I guess the producers wanted to show Bertie's evolution as Thackery's apprentice. Trying that one desperate move to save the patient on edge of death.
>>63831217
Even if he lives, Thack's damaged beyond repair at this point. I think that was kind of the point of leaving things ambiguous.
>>63832078
I don't deny that Bertie's final move was classic Thack and evidence that the torch has been passed, and the symbolism of Thack wearing black shoes has merit, but I think Bertie wearing white ones isn't directly indicative of anything.
this episode really pissed me off
it was a really good season up until this episode.
>>63832797
>Average /tv/ poster
>"Seems as though I nicked myself."
what did he mean by this
>>63832692
The white shoes were part of Thackery's apparel, the thing that made him stand out among the cast. Thackery wore them to emulate his mentor Christenson and now Bertie is wearing them as a nod to his relationship with Thackery.
Am I the only one who is still happy for Cleary and the nun?
>>63833828
I stopped liking Clearly when it was revealed that he intentionally got Harriet arrested and ex-communicated so he could be with her.
>>63833793
I don't remember specifics so I admit I could be wrong, and white shoes are undoubtedly Thack's signature, but I'm pretty sure other characters including Bertie have been shown wearing them before.
>>63833828
I think that's the wrong takeaway from it.
>>63829301
> still have little to no grasp
Considering no one even thought "hey let me listen to this fucker and see what makes him tick" wasn't even a thought...
Man, for some reason i feel like so many twists and "bad guys win" moments is writers attempt at getting s3, this finale is going to leave a lot of people pissed.
Some people got what was coming to them, like Algie and Barrow, but Galinger winning was too much, he's not even evil, more pathetic. I just watched last 4 episodes in a row and you could see Henry's twist from a mile away, at least he didn't start talking like goddamn Joker in his "i'm evil" scene with Cornelia.
Fuck them for ruining Cleary too, dude was a total bro, scene from episode 9 where he slowly walks to a dude with a bat is one of my favorite moments in a whole show.
>>63831124
You have it wrong. Cleary is good. His actions were ethically contemptible, but given the time period, they were necessary.
What Harriet cared most about was helping women- which Cleary also cared about. She cared about this more than being a nun. Cleary freed her from the church and now she can focus on what she cares about. His reasons were misguided (he's right about her happiness although that doesn't really matter to her) but the end result is a huge net positive for her. Just because he also gets what he wants doesn't make his actions morally wrong.
Her life will be good now, because he will treat her well (he does love her). The only negative is if she discovers what he did- but even then she might realize she's happier now. He only did what he did so he could treat her right and help her do what she believed in.
An extremely unethical act, for very moral reasons. In the end, I think he's in the right, even if he had to rob her of agency- which I don't predict he'd do again unless for equally moral reasons.
>>63834726
Cleary is good.
God is evil.
>we never got to see how the Knick family reacted to their burly ambulance driver and nun getting married
Feels horrible, bros. What would Thack have said? Neely? Bertie? Etc.

Nope, he manipulated her and ruined her life, and now she is in a committed relationship with a monstrous man whose only redeeming quality (that he seemed to have genuine love for someone) turned out to be a lie. You can't say her life was bad before and will be good now simply because she is freed from the church, which I'll remind you was a choice that Harry made on her own and seemed to enjoy. I'm very surprised with the interpretations trying to spin psychological abuse and manipulation as a positive.
>>63835196
Thackery would have definitely had a few jibes, as well as Barrow. The others I can only see as well wishers
>>63835196
Idk I can't be happy about that marriage anymore
I had a wide smile on when Cleary proposed and during that whole double date scene in the carnival but then Sodaburger had to ruin the best character they have and have him be the cause of Harry's fucked up life.
>>63835226
>seemed to enjoy
Name an instance where she enjoyed it. She was miserable and we're repeatedly shown (at least in the context of this show) that the church is irredeemable. Iirc, her choice to join the nunhood was done under the duress of being a single woman in poverty.
>genuine love...turned out to be a lie
but it didn't. He only did what he did because he genuinely loved her. He didn't do it because he wanted to fuck her and throw her out or any other reason, this is abundantly clear. He just wants to be with her and for her to be happy.
>psychological abuse and manipulation
The ONLY manipulative act was setting her up. And he didn't do it to ruin her life, just get her out of the church. The other consequences were unintended and he dutifully mitigated them, as he recognized his responsibility for them.
As for psychological abuse, I can't think of a single instance, unless you're using the broadest possible definition, in which case everyone is abusing everyone else.
>>63836274
They didn't ruin the character. If you think about it outside of his love of Harry he's a pretty unrepentant piece of shit.
>>63836332
How do you know she was miserable? She had a well respected position at the Knick as well as the church. It doesn't matter if you claim it's "genuine love", the bottom line is that he lied, schemed, tricked, manipulated Harry's lot in life so that she all but had to marry him. If you love someone you don't destroy their life and create events that force them to be with you. This is leaving out the fact that he stalked, shamed (psychological abuse), belittled, sold her out to the police, and made the entire world hate her. You do not do that to someone you love, it doesn't matter what your intentions are. I really don't get where you are coming from.
Well i'm late to the party but holy shit what an ending. I kinda wish its the series finale, its a perfect ending.
>>63818439
>SJW trash
what does this even mean
you can portray a sequence of events without endorsing them as morally correct
>>63828228
that's pretty fucking cool, actually. nice interpretation
>>63836665
If soderberg isn't going to be back for season 3 (if they do a season 3) it may as well be a finale
I really doubt they'd get someone that can recreate his visuals
>>63837244
Why did he wear the white shoes?
Are they pulling off the Homeland twist by killing off main character? It only could have been reasonably if it was series finale
>>63837395
All the doctors wear the white shoes
>>63807840
your waifu is a whore
did you learn nothing from barrow?
>>63807619
GOAT season finale.
Part of me wants to see at least one more season with Algie diving into psychiatry, Lucy and Henry's relationship, Bertie continuing his journey towards becoming a successful surgeon/innovator and last but not least Cleary and Harry's marriage live build on lies and deceit.
But while all this could be great the show still feels complete as it is. Superb television, leaving you wanting more while also satisfying you perfectly.
>>63816322
Fuck you, why did you made me watch that?
>>63837244
i don get it , why did he kill himself ? i know he failed that operation but killing yourself over that seems childish
Just how old was Barrow's whore?
She seemed like 13 or 14.
i didn't even realize it but did gallinger's beatdown of algie last episode fuck up his eye even worse?
based gallinger getting the last laugh
>>63837626
>Homeland
>killing main character
U wot
>>63839989
IIRC they were on the verge of something groundbreaking and basically failed the final test by killing the patient, so I think he just gave up because there wasn't anything more he could do
>>63840146
>did gallinger's beatdown of algie last episode fuck up his eye even worse?
yes
the eye looked fucked in the close-up in that scene with his father
>>63840155
at least to me, it seemed Brody was the MC
>>63840146
yeah, dude hit him with that little medical briefcase thing too I think those things are pretty solid
>>63840283
Are you a woman hater or living in the 17th century? There's only one MC in that show.
What did nurse slag say to Henry at the end of their scene? I didn't understand. And then later she says, "I'm glad you saw things my way." What did she mean?
>>63809233
>>63840932
she asked if cornelia was coming with them to newport
and the whole "I'm glad you saw things my way." I'm not entirely sure, maybe she told him about killer her dad
>>63841243
>I'm not entirely sure, maybe she told him about killer her dad
That would be cool, and devilish to say that while Cornelia is there
>>63814018
Am I the only one who still likes tom?
>>63841506
Yes
>>63841506
she was bound to get kicked out of nunhood sometime he just sped the process up
>>63821884
what if everything isn't meant to be literal
>>63840932
>>63841243
no, when henry invited her to newport, she pretty much said she would only go if there were some real commitment from his part, she wasn't going to be just 'a guest'. Seems Lucy got what she wanted and their relationship is suppossed to be serious now.
>>63841800
It's novel seeing a romance play out between two people so far from the typical hollywood perception of attractive.

>>63841800
Her face goes through 5-6 subtle expressions as she waits for his reaction. Dat acting
>watch the postop for Do You Remember Moon Flower?
>One writer is arguing that Gallinger's arguments were logical and were widely accepted scientific facts at the time so his behavior is understandable
>The other just calls him evil racist
i want the first guy to write everything ffs
>>63841993
yeah, it was nice
>>63822083
fuck no. Cleary wsn't a saint. What he did was messed up but, by far, not the worst thing he did when his morals come into question.
And while 'betraying' harry he didn't just to it for selfish reasons like he usually does.
>>63822580
>>63824196
dont for get about harry and cleary
>>63841506
No i think is actions were moral if unethical as argued above. At first it tarnished him for me, but then i realized it made him human enough to fit in with the show, before he was just kind of a chariacture. He's flawed like everyone else, but still trying his best to do the right thing- which is the barometer for 'good' in the knick's world.
