Moffat is both way too sensitive to criticism and out of touch so all he hears are the loudest voices. He overcorrects to the loudest recent criticisms whenever making a new series. Series 6 had a heavy convoluted arc, so he did a light arc he called a "soft mystery" and all two parters in favor of the "blockbuster" a week approach. Series 7 was criticised for Clara's lack of character so he made her a major focus of Series 8 and overall that series focused on the two leads character development rather than a heavy arc. Series 8 got the Clara Who complaint and the Doctor is a big meanie whining so Series 9 sidelined her for the most part and focused on the Doctor and softened him up. Also we got a bunch of almost all two parters because we'd gone so long without them. I wonder what Series 10 will look like?

My headcanon says that Orson's planet was Gallifrey in the far-flung future. The same as the planet from Utopia and the same one that Ashildr waited on. It had simply decayed and changed so much and the Timelords were long-gone. The Doctor and The Master didn't even recognize it.

Steven Moffat hadn't signed for a 10th series of Doctor Who when he wrote this year's Christmas special.
The showrunner told press including Digital Spy that he thought the festive episode could be his last ever for the show.
"I hadn't signed for next year at that point," he confirmed. "I have now - unless they fire me, which would be quite sensible!
"I thought it might be the last one, so to get River (Alex Kingston) in - that was bringing me full-circle.
"But also - much more importantly - I was very tired and [executive producer] Brian Minchin was going at me about what we were going to do for Christmas.
"And it just cheered me up, the idea that River could be in it. I hadn't written River for years and I love writing River."
Both Moffat and his leading man, Peter Capaldi, insisted that this year's special will be more light-hearted than 2014's 'Last Christmas'.

Anyway, it was pretty obvious that Clara was going to come back, but I didn't think it'd be as convoluted as it was. I figured they'd just pull a loophole out of the ravenbecause she actually faced it instead of running. "Why do they always run?"

But that's exactly WHY she wrote it on the chalkboard - If he was going to remember it, she wouldn't have needed to write it down. She has a key to the tardis and access to it before the doctor arrived, so she planted that message as a final gift because it was important

Think about it, the Ultimate Sanction relies on Rassilon breaking the Time Lock and causing a paradox so big it rips the time vortex and entire universe apart. But time Lock only exists because Doctor used the Moment, and the Doctor only used the Moment cause he knew the High Council and Rassilon were planning, and they only planned it because they knew (because of the Visionary) the Doctor would get, have and use the moment to end the war which would cause a Time Lock.
So what was the "fandom splitting in two" revelation? I dont remember anything mind-shattering.

I'm not fond of the over the top self loathing thing either, but I was a bit more okay with it in Series 8 because that whole series the Doctor was supposed to be struggling to find his feet again after being at war/retirement home on Trenzalore for centuries.
Then I thought it was dumb how he kept giving her flak for being reckless this series when she wasn't being that reckless really. It kind of goes with the territory if you're gonna be a companion, so why act like it's not okay all of a sudden. Yeah, pretty much all of this. Rassilon's been shown to be as much of a threat as the fucking Master/Missy but in this episode he got essentially swatted away just a couple minutes into the episode. It was just an instant villain downgrade for me.
All the while they're regenerating other time lords into chocolate logs they'll leave the Doctor alone.
