Hard to say. Anyone working at doctor who these days could probably easily fall into the danger of fanwank as it's surrounded by it's own disciples. I sincerely use to love this show, even the early Moffat stuff with Matt Smith, but the entire tone of the show has dramatically shifted into a parody of itself. Doctor Who use to have this amazing subtlety to it, and underlining themes. Now it's just all witty dialogue and flashy character moments. There's no substance to it anymore.

Compare the fold plate things that each "bolt" or whatever of the palm/writ area is fasted to. They're different. Sumpter's has ridges and is sharp near the bolt, Rassilon's is smooth throughout

David Tennant mentioned in his first interview in 2005 that doctor who shouldn't be gimmicky and then I realised what the last 4 seasons have been like, bowties, fish custard and fezzes, then 12s random guitar, tank and sonic sunglasses.
I wonder if tennant as a fan watches it anymore and realises it's no longer the show it used to be when it relaunched in 05. There were gimmicks here and there but it was short and subtle,like the 3d glasses and banana thing. These sonic sunglasses and guitars are really in your face.
At least with Clara gone 12 has reverted back to his darker, well dressed self. He was mutating into Matt Smith this season with the gimmicks, unremarkable clothes and awkward grandad trying to be cool act. Honestly it's embarrassing because 12 could be soo good if they gave him better writing and toned down the kooky behaviour that was rife in magicians apprentice and onwards. It lessens his character acting like 11 when he has more of a darker presence.

It's nowhere near as gaudy as it is now. Things started to sour in S6, I actually enjoyed the River story arc because I like it when doctor who has a good arc and the whole concept of the silence fascinated me and her connection to them and the doctors death. It was the filler that was shit and the wedding was a bit anti climactic.
After that I couldn't stand half the episodes and as soon as clara arrived I was all out. Came back for the 50th clara shoving herself into the plot wasn't needed, should have focused on 10 and the war doctor more but it was a flowing plot, shame they underused the other doctors imo.
Time of the doctor was alright but the explanation for the silents was anti climactic bullshit. They could've been such a great villain but now they're wasted. Series 8 tried to be less weird but gave us the moon egg, shitty robin hood, kiddies lost in the woods, pointless boyfriend and the doctors batshit birthday present.
9 was better with the two parters but that really isn't saying much. The finale has turned me around and I did like under the lake+docs zygon speech but that's all I can take away from S9.

But I have no idea who should be showrunner when moffat goes, which I hope he does soon. We need a fresh take on Doctor Who. It's not just the doctor and the companions that need to change its the head writers too. Moffat should have left with Matt Smith and given capaldi a new beginning.

I don't like river as a character I just like mystery and intrigue which this arc had. In retrospect River was a badly written character but it doesn't change the fact that I liked those eps more than the ganger and dollhouse episodes. I know who doesn't really have filler but they just felt really pointless. Gattiss night terrors was shit and the ganger arc was pretty dull. The USA eps, space station and wedding eps kept me watching. Doctors wife was pretty decent though, I like when DW talks about continuity and things.
Recent series don't really acknowledge the past/ anymore, just a flippant capt jack name drop and some unit cameos the current DW balance it perfectly and it makes it feel like you're in a real universe with the time war references and how it affected many worlds and stuff, its not as cohesive anymore. Which is why the upcoming gallifrey ep has me more hyped than I've been for DW in years.
