This last episode handled them well imo but it is a weakness for the season overall. Barrow getting over his head is in line with his character from the start and Thack getting back with his old lady makes sense from a standpoint of addict behavior. I like Gallagher's weird situation and Bertie and the Jewess are okay in my book.

Thack is brilliant, not a magician. To this day, Chickering's mother affliction isn't treatable at all. If anything, he gave her mericiful euthanasia, because that shit was going to progress very fast, and make her last days/months/year, extremely unpleasant and painful.
You can try to be progressive and aggressive, that doesn't mean you'll be successful. Not even his great, grandsons would live to see a treatment for her.
I know most people don't know shit about medicine, but that's the perspective we are dealing with in here.
I suppose people don't think Thack will come up with a succesful treatment for addiction either, there's a reason the twelve step program is based on a religious basis, because there's still not a scientific way about it. I know there are some recent studies that have been proven succesful, inducing normal fluctuacions of brain waves, that try to correct abnormal alpha waves to treat addicts though. Probably the smartest way around it, unless you try and take out a genome of addiction from a fetus, which probably isn't possible within the current medical context, or extremely difficult.
