This also would parallel with season 1 in regard to Colin Hanks letting Malvo go at the traffic stop. When he tells his boss (Ben Schmidt) about the incident, Ben literally says "its Sioux Falls all over again".
So I'm guessing Lou gets shot at the traffic stop by whoever they think is responsible for the Sioux Falls massacre, and he gets away. Hence "its Sioux Falls all over again". Lou and Colin Hanks both let a suspect get away at a traffic stop, and they both end up single parents

I was just looking into it and I was mistaken, the traffic stop shooting is mentioned by Molly, and she said she was in Algebra class when it happened. Shes literally 4 years old this season so I doubt we'll see it.
On the other hand she mentions she was in Algebra class when it happened so it could have happened during the time of the film Fargo since it takes place in 1987

So between 2009 and 2011? Assuming he literally means a couple it could be as early as 2009 but I don't think they'll make it as close to modern day as 2012

This. I rewatched S1 over the last couple of days and the early episodes especially are a lot ropier than I remembered. The pilot especially is very compressed; I kind of have a hunch that Hawley wanted it to build up to and end on the murder, but decided or was persuaded to compress Lester's emasculation into a string of almost cartoonish scenes.
Bothered a little by the deus-ex-machina rain of fish, too. More so than I was the first time watching, though I remember being slightly put off then, too.
Absolutely dynamite scoring, though, with those drums. I pretty much never even notice scoring, never mind remember it, but that was really great.
