Can someone explain the meaning of this film? I understand what happened, but what was the idea of the film? What is the meaning of depicted events?

i can only give my own interpretation, but I think the idea is revealed or at least best represented in Estike's storyline. As she dies the narrator of the story comes in and says that before her death Estike learned about the cosmic interconnection between all the people in her life, which is a theme that is explored throughout the entire film, just from different character point of views. I think Satantango is really about how we are all interconnected and interdependent yet we still treat each other like shit and misery exists because we make it so. Some people can read even further and say that things will never change so long as we continue to mistreat each other and refuse to look at our place in the universe on a cosmic scale.

Basically that life is terrible and humanity is out for themselves with no exceptions. Everything is bleak and meaningless, freedom is a terrifying thing to stupid people, and the world is a cold and unforgiving place.
Tarr demonstrates this by holding the camera on the desolate barren wasteland and the pathetic mongrels who are the characters for minutes and minutes at a time, as the audience shifts uncomfortably under their gaze. He truly is a genius. Take, for example, how she tortures the cat: it is a metaphor for the corruption of power. Power, corruption, humanity, they are all intertwined in this masterpiece.

Also I'm not sure if I understand it correctly, but when Irimiás and Petrina was having conversation with the captain, and he told them that they should follow the law. Was it that the whole idea was that they don't just steal the money from villagers, but they do it in some sort of "lawful" way, by not killing them but rather fooling them, and I assume they gave some amount of money to the captain. Am I right?
