And I wish I knew how. I went to a random animation and inspected the page element—couldn't find a .gif source anywhere, even when I hovered over the gif with the select element tool. It was just a block with a width, height, and location on the page.

Yes, they serve a bunch of separate images through canvas element. Timings are in a script. Just went to check how it worked and discovered that the script just under <div id="wrapper"> contains not only timings, but also a zip with all images. They are, however, very touchy about hotlinking, so you have to switch to click that fullscreen toggle before pasting the zip link into the address bar to access the high-res one (though chances are it's the same as the smaller).

Good, now I'm more knowledgable in the web development field. I didn't know that was possible with the wrapper, zip file, timing-thing. I guess it's good if for whatever reason you don't want people stealing, or you just want to show off your html/css/JavaScript skills. Does this method need JS anyway, would you know? I've been taking web dev classes and I guess this is good to know—starting JS in a few days, actually.

One other thing to consider is a loseless quality delivered by this method vs heavy restrictions of gifs or compatibility issues of APNG. I wouldn't say that it prevents stealing—as long as something is displayed, it can be recorded—but it's less straight-forward than right-clicking (on pixiv, it's possible to manually pause on every frame and save it or to drag and drop them into a folder from devtool).
Interestingly, though, accessing the zip accessed by a link contains only 10 frames—whilst this animation consists of 23. Lurking around: javascript:window.location=pixiv.context.ugokuIllustFullscreenData.src; pasted into devtool's console gets you a full archive.

As for the javascript, wrapper div does nothing, it's just a container, the magic is in those <script> and <canvas> elements inside. Yes, JS controls what happens on canvas, be it rendering a cool browser demoscene intro (e.g. http://wab.com/) or simply replacing pictures one after another.

By which I mean, the dude really hates his art getting reposted and tends to delete everything whenever someone reposts it, then pauses for a few months to a year and gradually starts posting new stuff. No kidding, I think he's done it like 6-8 times since I started following him in 2009.
Gelbooru actually has a pretty good collection of his art, under the artist tag "Kagerofu." He doesn't have a Pixiv anymore, but his twitter is Oagedon. Although recently he's drifted away from the sort of stuff that's been posted here so far; he's apparently gotten really into transfur stuff, so that might or might not do it for you, but you should still be able to find his older art.

Fakku has issued various copyright claims in the past to force exhentai to take down some of their content, so it's probably safe to say that they aren't affiliated. I've never seen a redirect like that on Hitomi, but I imagine it was probably something that Fakku claimed a copyright on, and they decided it would be better to add a redirect instead of completely removing the doujin from their database.
