When I think of character design, I think of caricature first and foremost. Fuck all those character design rules from school, it never captures how broad life is. So you might as well draw deeper from the well and go straight to the source instead of learning some pre-established library of visual shapes, symbols, and proportions that may effectively communicate an idea, but otherwise feel cold and mathematical.
Now, as for wrapping what you learn from life in a sexy package, then I might start looking at other artists to see how they put the finish on their work to give it power and fluidity.
