Horse fan here, pls no bully. From the scant amount of Gumball I've seen, family is way more important of a theme in his life. In contrast, one of the main six horses (hexagonists?) just had her family introduced in a recent episode, in Season 6. Another one has only had her father appear for a few seconds, unvoiced, and her family life is never even discussed. A few siblings and one grandmother are regular characters, but it's definitely not as prominent as befriending characters of no relation.

Yes, it is. In the first season, I reckon Gumball has about four or five friends, tops (not including one-off ones like Simian or Bobert, who go back to being enemies later in the same episode). However, there are strong family themes throughout the show. Hence all the incest art.

I'm currently (and I think I've finally got it going) attempting to go for the angle where Nicole initiates to cheer Gumball up after he complains that he feels unloved. Hopefully I make sure the change in emotion won't give whiplash (that was one of my last criticisms, although that fic was intentionally cheesy due to the request and was reposted without context)
Now that I think about it, I could have just barged straight in without much consideration for emotions, but it seems kind of empty to me, and I want to try and finish what I've already started.

And that's great, but that doesn't mean everyone else has to like it. I personally enjoy /co/ fanwork (including porn) that explores or extends the character's existing attributes. If you disregard the character's character, why bother making art of that character in the first place?
Some people can just enjoy it on an aesthetic level, and that's fine, but it just doesn't work for me.

S1 fag here who only stayed for the fandom, so take this with a grain of salt:
S1: Bright, happy, mostly feel good, beautiful animation but not too dramatic stories
S2: Generally seen to have better plot writing, but much worse visuals due to time constraints (S1 was meant to have 40 but only delivered 36 eps). IMO everyone became a dick and the show lost its joyful charm, focusing more on pop culture references and emotional depth. Explores a lot of secondary characters.
S3: like S2 but better.
S4: claimed to be the best season yet. Animation is better than S2 and S3. Gumball and Darwin VA's changed.

Fair enough. Gumball being stupid (and inconsistently so) and Gumabuse are the main S1 criticisms. I think "feel good" might be the wrong word (I mean, lots of episodes were sad in parts) but I prefer the generally playful and silly personality to the douchebag-jerk, adolescent tones of later seasons where Gumball goes around properly insulting people.
And truth be told, cynicism is right down my alley, so I have no issue with it.
