It's well know at this point that Cinder killing Pyrrha was one of the first things Monty wanted when planning out the story.
Jen Brown even confirmed that she knew all the way back when they first cast her in the role that Pyrrha was going to die.
Monty was already half-way through with the animation for Volume 3 when he died, and the script was already set. Who knows what Miles an Kerry wanted.

I hate that so many writers these days think that the only way to illustrate that a character is evil is to have them murder a main character on the good guy team.
Death should be used sparingly, not used in excess. Overuse it and it becomes just as bland and uninteresting as any other plot device. Eventually you get to the point where you stop getting invested in characters because they're probably just going to die.
Look at something like Game of Thrones. They're so guilty of this shit that it was actually exciting to see some fucker come BACK from the dead. (And no, not Jon Snow. I speak of The Hound.). Meanwhile Ramsay Bolton gets mauled to death by his own doggos and the overall feeling left behind was just "Eh, that happened."
I hope RWBY doesn't go this route.

You don't need a big budget to tell a competent story. All you need for that is a little fucking finesse and imagination.
If the budget was really that shallow, more scenes where characters are just sitting around and developing through conversation would have been a more efficient use of time and money instead of injecting in flashy fight scenes wherever you could.
