That's perfect! The beginning scene of their slice-of-life will be a perfect counterbalance to their adventure of getting their butt's kicked on a daily basis.
It also shows a wonderfully simple goal for each character-- just hang out and relax with each other. Simple goals are effective character building moments: the simpler they are, the faster and easier it is to relate to the character!
So we have Nick going through academy and working his ass off and getting shit on both ends-- academy is rough stuff, and whatever job he's getting probably ain't the best. Judy had her adventure, and now she realizes how much of police work is dealing with the terrible situations that just crush your soul.
Contrast EVERYTHING they do with their home life. If Judy has to wrestle a filthy homeless person into submission, have her take a shower. If Nick deals with a real angry customer all day who busts his balls, have him be waited on by Judy. Give the reader a feeling of why this is so important to them.
Remember that any good story has an arc: how do the characters change? How do their trails and tribulations change? How do the characters react to change, and how does the world react to change? Where is their lowest point? What do they do when all seems lost? How do they figure out-- based on everything that has happened previously in the story-- how to save the situation?
Outline the major events first so that you know what the most important points are to get across before you transition to the next scene, and then simply expand on them.

Okay, so a few days ago someone requested Gazelle in a New Wave style. Which is basically just a punk style. So I drew this with inspiration from Kim Wilde, Debbie Harry, and Joan Jett.
I spent way longer on this than usual, and I might still color it, but something about that 80's punk rock style calls to me.
