What's the deal with Japan and its obsession with mascots? Having one for a sports team is understandable but towns themselves have them, companies have them, they're all over the place there.
Does one of their country leaders own a mascot suit factory or something?

The towns having them is weird, but the people who make those calls, aren't the ones paying. I guess it makes sense in the way of having a state flower or something, but I think one mayor thought it would be a great a idea, then the next decided that if that town gets one, then they should get one too.

The official MLB rules are available online for free. It's a bit of a lengthy read but you don't need to know all of it. Japan mostly follows the same rules but there's some changes to game length and field sizes.
If you don't fancy reading, just grab a few video games and give them a play. It's really not a difficult sport to follow.
