I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but there was one fic where Judy is looking at Nick's music collection, and a bunch of band names are listed off.
They were all animalized versions of real bands, but none of them were that obscure. Ewe2, Sleigher, Mews. Stuff like that. But after every single band, in parentheses in bold, the real life equivalent was named.
And its like dude, its pretty obvious what the real life band is.
And then another fic had a chapter start with Nick lying in bed with Judy (platonically even though he has a crush on her) and the text says something like "Nick felt his temperature and discomfort rising" or something like that. Then in parentheses it said "His discomfort was his boner if you didn't catch that"
and its like really, if you gotta explain it in an out of story insert, perhaps you are doing something wrong.

And on your exposition (because you deserve a longer explanation)
I'm 100% guilty of abusing a narrative story structure and having very little character movement/interaction. I'm a journalist by trade. I'm an editor by trade. it's just the way I've been trained to write. That said, because you're aiming for a character driven story with heavy emphasis on scene-writing, it's best to have narrative sparse, but poignant when used. I look at a lot of fics and see a lot of dialogue heavy things where I think some authorial voice could break the monotony.
If you want to write scenes, try and have some narrative/exposition that flows beautifully between your scenes. Something like seeing Clawhauser die a little when Seth was selecting a donut is EXACTLY what I mean when I saw have powerful writing sprinkled between your characters talking.
But in some scenes, here's my advice:

This is all well and good, but HOW is it these things? The reader wants to forget that the author is effectively reading his prose to people. So you could have it like:
