I never understood this, aside from ruleset RPG stuff. Especially since people tend to make essentially recolors of their earlier characters anyway, but without the in-character history with the others.
And then there are some people who get upset if you don't permadeath your characters (in a non-perma channel, ofc). Like, is your immersion so completely broken because that other guy's character popped back into existence just like he did the first time?

As someone who does some permadeath stuff, I basically use it as a char deleting system. I mean, if you have a char that you're just not having fun with anymore, or perhaps your char is getting a lot of attention you don't want it to get, just find someone who's into perma and then you have an excuse to not use them anymore.
Not to mention that people know that, especially with averagely/well built chars, it's gonna take a lot to delete them, so permadeath preds tend to try and make really long, engaging roleplays to make the 'last one' a hit, y'know?

Writing is only considered not a skilled thing because you spend 12 years with mandatory writing training. If everyone was forced to draw from age 5 to 18, the art scene would be vastly different, too.
In any case, there are good and bad writers like there are good and bad artists, and writing requires skill just as much as art does. My friend has a motor disorder and can't draw to save his life, so he took to writing instead. The commission business for writing is smaller than that of artwork for sure, but some people still make dosh with it.
