I honestly don't know. It looks like dull, red plastic in so many of the pictures, but I don't trust what anyone says.
A bunch of people were saying Hot Rod and Ironhide were unpainted, but that's bullshit. The current practice with MPs, it seems, is to put a thin coat of paint on top of plastic that is the same color. As far as I'm concerned, only way to know for sure is to see it in person.

The point of Universe is to release ones that don't all feel like they are from the same setting, but a lot of different ones. Like the original had a mixture of G2/Machine Wars, All the Beast Series, Armada, Energon, and even some new molds with shifting around of things like coloration, alignment, and making all-sorts of cross-generational homages.

Either way, Generations has always mostly been G1 with some other stuff thrown in. I'd much rather they use a new mold slot on some obscure G1 guy than to rehash some Animated toy who already had a toy (and doesn't need it) and even has a G1 counterpart in Classics already.

The original point of Universe is that Armada wasn't enough product for the sudden resurgence in Transformer interest. So Hasbro dusted off a bunch of old molds (G2, BM, RID) and gave them crazy G2 colors. Universe was also a great way for new collectors to get neat older molds.
Since Universe was popular without much tie-in, that gave enough reason for Hasbro to start the Classics line after Takara made some awesome "modern G1" designs without being limited by gimmicks. That's been what Generations and beyond was about.
To really make a Universe 2.0, it'd be about taking the neater molds from Energon, Cybertron, Animated, and Prime and give them crazy colors while selling them cheap.

I think its one of the most clever repaints ever. The Fuzors and the Monsterbots are some of the more weirder points in TF history with designs unlike most others, and especially back in the mid 2000's it didn't seem like it was likely for the Monsterbots to get new toys. Its just a nice coincidence that their was a figure that happened to look similar to a Monsterbot's alt-mode.

I love the design concepts of Animated, but Derrick J Wyatt's style is just so ugly to me. It's so lanky and stiff. Safeguard, Oil-slick, Rodimus Minor, and so many other figures would look better without having to conform to the strange amorphous polygonal blob style from the show.
Lockdown and Lugnut's movieverse toys were infinity better than their animated counterparts. I wouldn't even mind on some toys were just resculpted into classics styled figures with better 5mm hands and way less chin.

I think what's funny about DJW's style is that it looks better when someone else is interpreting it. Just look at the Japanese TFA intro and it really goes to show how dynamic and exciting the designs are when they are well animated and have just a bit of refinement.

But that's DJW's art and I think it looks really cool there. The thing is, when you see DJW's style in the shows, , its someone else animating it. I doubt a lot of the promo art was even drawn by DJW since there tends to be a lot of different people doing merchandising art.

When the Universe line came out, there really was only about 7 or 8 years of "modern"(Cyberjets/laser rods and onward) Transformers molds. I had that initial reaction with the first promo image of TFA that everyone had, but once I saw it in motion I loved it. Some of it was iffy, but I've always had a thing for that type of proportion like with the fugitoid or mega man if that makes sense.
It's now my favorite TF series and I'm glad they finally released all the seasons on DVD and compiled both allspark almanacs in to one.

On the whole, Marvel's artists were all competent at drawing most things, most just didn't draw particularly cool looking transformers. It's in contrast to a lot of current Transformers artists who really only know how to draw Transformers and aren't that good at anything else.
