There are much lesser and smaller Star Wars sets that are essentially one vehicle that go for $65-$100 now a days.

The old price to parts ratio for SW was 10 cents a piece. Now it's about 12 cents to account for inflation, and also in the past 5-10 years, piece counts have gone up. The original X-wing and the newest X-wing are both 11.2 cents/piece, but the one is $30 and the other is $80.
This is also why the Microfighters (and before them, the Planet sets) were introduced: to give younger buyers (who don't have as much money as adult collectors) a chance at getting a passable version of their favorite ship, with a minifigure, for $10.
The TFA sets, though, are a really bad example, since some of them have a P2P ratio of 13 cents or more.

It's nice but don't worth $400 if you ask me. You can buy like two awesome modular buildings or two UCS sets with that amout that sits much better on your shelf than that big ball with gaps.
More like a "premium" toy than anything.

The hefty price tag is largely due to the minifigures.
I mean, this Ghostbuster's set has 800+ more pieces and costs $50 less.
