Do you guys have that one friend who always pushes a broken custom card idea and asks you about it?
Currently he keeps sending me this 1cmc Planeswalker with "+1 Add G to your mana pool", and despite how much I disagree, he keeps arguing how it isn't that bad. It's been going on for a while now, and this post is partly to rant, but how do I get him to either make it in quiet or leave me alone about it? I've tried dismissing it like a normal human being but he keeps sending me it.

Get him to post it here, or do it yourself. Then show him the responses it gets. Oh, and point to Tibalt and the original Nissa for why CMC < 3 planeswalkers are not a good idea.
>>
>>48207351
He sent me it in text this time around, so here is what he left me:

G
Planeswalker

+1 Add G to your mana pool.
-3 Return target card from your graveyard to your hand,
-5 Search your library for a creature card reveal it and put it in your hand. Shuffle your library.

Yeah, this is why low-cast planeswalkers don't work, because this doesn't even feel like a planeswalker. It might as well be an artifact. Come on, the most powerful ability it has is on a 2-CMC card. A good card, mind you, but still. It needs to be CMC 3 or greater, first off, and we can go from there. Seriously, this could be a creature.

4RR for a 5/14 with vigilance and reach (that leaves equipment everywhere on death). Doesn't actually seem that strong, given the requirement that you stick a bunch of shitty artifacts in your deck, but still...

Kinda weird that you NEED the blue mana (or other birds in your deck) to do the +X/+X or -X/-X, which are very black and... well, actually, +X/+X based on X mana is actually pretty dang green, but I guess you can pretend it's an easy to cast shade ability that needs a sac.

On the whole this card seems cool and good, is a nightmare with squadron hawk, and could probably still benefit from a little bit of tweaking and twiddling.

Why does she have lifelink? She's not a vampire. Doesn't need to be legendary either. I'd even drop the white and cost her at 2B since first strike is tertiary in black and buffing your demonic overlords is pretty black.

Might bump her up to mythic. And better Serra Angel ain't nothing new, see flippy-Avacyn.
Though giving Reimu Aetherling's flicker ability is kinda bonkers, especially with an ETB.

>>48210621
Always post 2hus, anon.
As for lifelink, I was thinking "she bleeds them dry to feed to Remi" or something, thus collecting life from the blood she spills. But that's already kinda covered by the +1/+1 counter.
Yeah, I forgot FS was tertiary black, too.

I like that Parsee, by the way. Cool way to play up the 'jealousy' part.

Serra Angel has vigilance. That said I'd like it better in mono-white and flickering for WW. Still no reason to be legendary other than the name.

>Hexproof and shade is pretty good, but then again it is 5 CMC. Though I don't see the connection to the actual character. Care to enlighten me?
Hexproof more because she's kinda ascetic (Hi trolls) and such.
Shade because half-ghost.
Lifegain because she feeds them to Yuyuko.

>Serra Angel has vigilance. That said I'd like it better in mono-white and flickering for WW. Still no reason to be legendary other than the name
Reimu has pseudo vigi by flickering herself on yorur second main, since she'll come back untapped.
I guess she could go mono W, too.

As for images, I use danbooru, and typically search pools with the character name. So my search would be:

>>48211265
Give it "except for the first card drawn per turn" or "except for the top card of the library" and it's a lot more balanced for 2 mana, probably.
>>
>>48207209
Ok, where to begin?
4 abilities, none of which synergize with the rest.
Poor wording on the plus 2.
Repeatable wrath (compare Elspeth, Sun's Champion at 1 more mana)
Emblem layering issues with her own animation effect.
Is a Fallen Angel, but isn't black.

>>48208948
Fine card power-wise, I like the throwback to dark heart of the woods, but agree it isn't a mythic level card.

>>48211215

>>
>>48211289
Wouln't break modern.
>>48211330

>>
>>48211244
I've worked on a few sets before. The planeswalkers wouldn't be as much of a focus mechanically. It's more just a cycle shifted into other colors, and then designing the rest of the set off of cards related to them and the planes they're from.

>>48211370
Yeah, colorshifting is an interesting concept, though I'm not sure how far I'll end up going with it. I might try and simply reference other cards and tweak them to fit a new color, rather than just transferring wholesale Planar Chaos style.

>Hexproof more because she's kinda ascetic (Hi trolls) and such.
I'll admit I haven't read most of the official manga but I don't think that's true.
>Shade because half-ghost.
It makes sense creature-type wise but ehh. I guess you could justify it with her concentration gimmick.
>Lifegain because she feeds them to Yuyuko.
If you associate eating with lifegain then shouldn't that ability be on Yuyuko?

>Reimu
I also meant to say that personality-wise I'd put Reimu firmly in RW and nowhere near U. And vigilance you have to pay for =/= vigilance. Plus the new Avacyn is a thing.

>Yuuka
Abilities generally go continuous first, triggered second, activated third. You can also combine (current) lines 3 and 4 to make it a bit less wordy.
>Lands with awakening counters on them are creatures with base power and toughness 3/3 and have hexproof. They're still lands.
Solid design overall.

Also think about how one-dimensional playing with her must feel.

Look at Garruk Wildspeaker. Think at why ALL of his numbers are exactly that. Consider how the abilities synergize. Think what his abilities tell about his character. Think of how the games where you've caster Garruk have played out. How they've felt. Now how the games where you've played against Garruk have played out. How THEY'VE felt.

It's tricky, because you want to reward people for building tribal but not force them into doing it. Not every card has to support a tribal archetype, and tribes should be allowed to overlap occasionally when it comes to color.

I say as I post an awful lord for a shitty tribe. But hey, if Ishkana can make print, so can this sucker!
inb4
>not actually a God creature
>>
>>48216395
Yeah. I've read that it's important to have Tribes that cross colors and interact with eachother, so you don't just have 1 color tribes as the only options.

I'll also have to resist the temptation to make every card tribal support, since it sounds like those sorts of more generic effects are key.

I had it in mind to do mostly 2 color tribes, though I might need more than just 5 allied color pairs.
>>
>>48216507
Lorwyn was really good about how it did tribal by incorporating the Changelings, as well as a bunch of cards that would care about more than one tribe at once by being in the color the tribes shared.

It does, it's where emblems go.
>>
>>48220078
I believe so. I'm pretty sure that when they were developing Innistrad, the mechanic that became Miracle was originally going to be something that allowed a card to start off in exile or something, and you could retrieve it later. They eventually axed this idea because they didn't like the absolute certainty it gave players. Think about it, all you need is for one of the cards to be good to see it dominate every format in Magic before getting banned so hard people give you stink eye for even suggesting you might use it.
>>
>>48220241
I would need to know more about what their designs looked like to know exactly what needs to be avoided. I can't even visualize how miracle was connected to a command zone mechanic.
>>
>>48220343
You don't get it. It is the absolute certainty that makes the entire concept impossible to ever see the light of day. Think about it. Currently, the only constructed formats that have this same sort of guarantee are Vanguard and Commander, formats built around those very cards. Having an absolute guarantee of a card is a Pandora's Box that Wizards was very smart not to open.
>>
>>48220388
There are ways to make it so it's not certain, and I would expect that they experimented with those ways, but I can't know if I don't have any info.
>>
>>48220415
>cards that start in the command zone
>There are ways to make it so it's not certain
Well, you've pretty much convinced me that you have no clue what you're talking about.
>>
/ccg/ SUCKS! So many people put effort into making interesting cards yet NO ONE has the time to rate or critique eachother. There are only about 20 cards posted that have had meaningful replies.

And yet, you guys make the same thread every single day.
>>
>>48220442
I'd say you have no imagination, but you imagined reading something about command zone cards in innistrad development, because if they would have abandoned a mechanic for such an obvious reason, it would have never made it to testing in the first place. You have provided no evidence to prove that you didn't just make that up.
>>
>>48220516
You know, I really don't like being accused of lying

http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/topical-blend-did-you-hear-one-about-2015-12-07-0

Now, I want to preface this by stating that I read this article a while ago, so my memory was a bit fuzzy before, which is why I didn't state for certain in my earlier post that the mechanic was related to Miracle. This article is about a few different mechanics, the first being the one I was talking about, cards that would allow you to start the game with them in your opening hand (not the command zone, but it still fits in being a guarantee of a card). Now, I'm not entirely certain why I thought this mechanic was related to Miracle, but it might be because the one after it does talk about development they were doing in Innistrad, an unused keyword called Forbidden that they eventually replaced with Miracle.

>>48220496
How about you get off your high horse and do some feedback?
>>
>>48220869
That's a pretty big detail to let slip, because you made it sound like something that was seriously considered.

Just because a card is open, doesn't mean you can use it. The simplest example is something that costs more mana than you can produce. Card variance still exists because, even if you are guaranteed the card, you aren't guaranteed the conditions needed to use it. And card variance can always be increased in one place to offset it in another.
>>
>>48221117
Well, yes, but it's still a guarantee that you will HAVE the card, which is the most important part. The conditions for casting it come afterwards. Like with commanders or vanguards. You might not be able to use them every turn, but you will always have the opportunity to use them.

And I did tell you that I read the article a while ago and I was fuzzy on the details.
>>
>>48221199
But the conditions can be much more extreme, because this something that is ONLY used this way. The first thing I have to do is think up an implementation that works at the common level.
>>
>>48221442
If the guarantee of a card doesn't have an effect on the power level, then why are there banned commanders?

Someone having their Kokusho every game is something they don't want to happen.
>>
>>48221523
How does that relate to my post? Those cards weren't created with the intention of working that way, while these would.

One thing that will need to be done regardless of the implementation is that there needs to be a downside to having them in your deck. Every one would need to incur some kind of penalty from the very start of the game. Does that outright disqualify the mechanic though?
>>
>>48219595
flavorwise there's no difference between token creatures and creature cards. I'd change the cost reduction to "CARDNAME costs G less for each Elemental creature you control." for the same basic functionality.

While I feel like you have a point in that we have problems with people posting a card and not at least reviewing one in exchange, this is likely for a few reasons:
>fear of being wrong on a critique
People simply don't want to be called out for a bad critique with their "name" attached to it. While this is kinda unfortunate, it's a product of the community. Some people have thicker skin than others.
>nobody reviewed my last few cards even though i posted critiques of others' cards so i'm done trying
A vicious cycle. Once it starts, it doesn't usually stop easily.

Now, while being as confrontational as you are being about it, >>48220869 has a point. The best way to break the cycle is to be the better poster. If nobody gives you feedback, that's okay. If it becomes a problem (several posts of your card being ignored and people only responding your critiques if at all) then take a break. Don't bother getting mad about it. This thread and these people are not worth it, honestly. Card design is supposed to be fun, and if you aren't enjoying yourself, then why bother? Now, of course if you're just making troll cards or being annoying on purpose, that's another can of worms, but we'll assume that honestly made cards will, with any luck, interest people, and elicit honest feedback. That's how the threads get better. If they aren't good, don't participate if you've made an honest effort to improve them. If you haven't, then don't bother opening your mouth, honestly. It doesn't help anyway.
>>
Would it be possible to have a creature cost 1 to less to cast for each -1/-1 counter you choose to have it enter with? Either global or on the creature itself. I can't think of a way to word that isn't really awkward.
>>
>>48222255
Heartless Summoning is the easiest way; you do a static reduction for the static number of counters. Making it variable is where the wordiness gets out of control (possibly; maybe there's a way to do it I'm not considering or thinking of).

Islandwalk is pretty phased out. The design could work with flying though.

>>48219228
Too efficient. Increase the cost by a lot or get way lower on the p/t. Another option is to tweak with the abilities though. Personally I don't like red doing toughness based damage.

Not sure if the wording really works or is as concise as it should be. Basically I just want to give them whatever landwalk they put counters on.
I would just make them unblockable as long as opponent controlled a land with a counter on it, but I would really prefer landwalking (for flavor reasons).

Remove the you may. As is refusing to trafo would just result in the trigger being put on the stack again until you accept.
For the flipside,
>~ has forestwalk as long as a Forest has a travel counter on it. The same is true for islandwalk and Islands, etc.
might work.
Flavorful card, but I'm not a fan of the mechanics. Why not make it a land enchant that gives a counter on ETB and then trafos for a cost, say 1W each? Against 3+color decks you'll only ever need one counter to be unblockable so the difference is negligible.
Mono-white seems kind of strange to me, but then I couldn't tell you a better color either.

First, wording doesn't work because Overload was designed for the nonpermanent spells. Abilities on those cards work differently from abilities on permanent cards. Second, does this deal 5 damage to each player for each creature that player controls? If so, holy fucking shit, what are you doing?
>>
>>48226834
First off, casting it as mono-blur is a color pie break. You could probably ditch the blue entirely.

Secondly, there's little reason for this to be a creature at all. I'd suggest pumping up the power and toughness to around 3, and making the damage 3 as well. That means you can get either a Bolt on a 3/3, or a 3 damage boardwipe. Much easier to manage costs of.

Holy shit... Sit down, and take notes.

Landfall doesn't have any real rules meaning, it's just a flag to show players mechanics with similar triggers. Landfall is "Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control" in most cases.

You don't "place" lands, you "play" lands. Though make note that you can also "play" other cards, "play" simply being a catchall term for both playing a land AND casting a spell.

You don't capitalize types, like land, or supertypes, like basic. Only subtypes are capitalized.

Counter names are not capitalized, neither are they "placed" they are "put" onto permanents.

Counters are also not "transferred" they are "moved" from permanent to permanent.

Wizards really dislikes "their" and "they" and instead prefer "he or she" or "his or her" or other variants.

You shouldn't use the X variable on a card to refer to two different things unless each one is mutually exclusive. For example, this card.

So, for this card, better wording is
>Landfall — Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, put a charge counter on ~.
Oh, and ~ refers to the name of the card. Just to make sure you know.
>XC: Move X charge counters from ~ onto another artifact you control.
>T, Remove any number of charge counters from ~: Target opponent reveals a card from his or her hand for each charge counter removed this way.

As for the mechanics, sure doesn't feel like mythic. I mean... it doesn't actually DO anything, you know? It needs support for anything to really matter. Also, remember that revealing cards isn't a huge advantage. There's a 1-drop enchantment that has all your opponents play with their hands revealed (oh, there's a good use of "their") just for reference.

OK, I think this is something we need to go back to the drawing board for. The mana cost and P/T both feel off, I see no reason for it to be legendary or a faerie, and I don't see much reason for it to use C costs and Landfall. If you want to keep them, you can, I'm just saying that I wouldn't. They just seem a bit random.

Are there any cards in particular you want this to combo well with?

Aether Vial and other stuff with charge counters.

I'll probably scrap it or something, I just really liked the art a good amount that I'll probably use it somewhere else.

You got me there. I'm an oldfag, and banding was one of my favorite abilities, so "fixing" banding to try and make it printable is something that motivates me. Leadership fixes most of the problems with banding. I think it's a straight-up better mechanic while keeping banding's flavor and tactical interest.

I understand the "eew, banding" reaction though.

You literally could've found better wording with two seconds of searching.

Two seconds.

"You may play cards from your graveyard.

If a card would be put into your graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead."

Do your fucking research.
>>
>>48229627
This card seems really poor. It encourages dumping things in your grave, but Delve and all the exiling means your grave will vanish within a couple turns of casting it. Even if you do, playing a few spells from your grave isn't going to help much.

>>
>>48229912
Green creature removal that's red, you mean? I get that "you" are fighting the guy, but the card is a red card, even with the drawback.

It is like Char.

I know it is frustrating that some colors don't get to do stuff others do, but that's the point. Green's removal should be creature based, because it is the creature color.
>>
>>48229266
>>48229627

Yeah, as others have said these cards are pretty bad. A good thing to bear in mind when designing cards is what impact will they have on the game once I've cast them?

In the case of Candledrone you need to jump through hoops to cast it, then once you have it basically just sits there and moves charge counters onto things. It's fine designing a card that is support other cards, but normally these are small cheap cards, not something really expensive you have to build your deck around in order for you to last long enough to cast it. In short it'll probably sit on the battlefield for several turns before it even actually does anything productive, as such it's a bad card. I would honestly play Hexplate Golem over this in like every conceivable deck I could think of.

For Slient (Silent?) Mourning it's a cool concept, Yawgmoth's Agenda with Delve, but the "Exile 10 cards from your graveyard or you lose the game" means you'll probably only get like one turn (upkeep) out of it before it kills you. In this instance this card is sort of the opposite of Candledrone, it does more but you have less time to do it in. This thing should have a drawback, but that is way too steep. If it milled the top 10 cards of your library every turn instead that would seem better. To be honest though I'd just make it straight up Yawgmoth's Agenda with Delve and have done with it.

Keep it simple. The more lines of text, the worse your card is. The best cards we come up with have the least rules text.

Awesome example here: >>48212302
Seven words, flavorful as fuck, would be fun to play. Your cards do too much. Does Candledrone really need BOTH the ability to move charge counters AND the look at the other guy's hand ability? Does Silent Mourning really need the "end of turn exile 10 cards or lose the game" ability?

As an Aura it should have "Enchant creature" as the first line and then something like "Whenever enchanted creature doesn't untap during your untap phase, put a +1/+1 counter on it."
You use counters to track +1/+1 unless it goes away at end of turn. Auras only enchant one permanent.

I've never done this before, so be brutal. These cards will fit into a set with a universal "-1/-1 counters matter" theme with minor subthemes that I haven't thought up yet and an artifact thing that involves artifacts (creature and noncreature) splitting into tokens when they die. So basically, are these really bad/good in a vaccuum? Do they seem like a cycle (even loosely connected)? Do they break the color pie or do anything absolutely stupid? I know about the wordiness and I'll try to avoid it in the future.
>>
>>48235742
Mourning Scarab and Tidepool Tender look ok.

Infectious Mold is too small to get much out of its effect.

Shifting Blaze looks out of place in the cycle as it doesn't interact with counters.

Arboreal Weaver is infinite mana unless I'm missing something.
>>
>>48235812
Oh shit. I forgot to limit the weaver.
>>
>>48235742
For the first, White doesn't typically get effects that care about creatures dying, though that can vary on the set. Insects aren't a White tribe, but that's more minor. As for power, it seems okay. It can tap down multiple things if you have a way to keep counters on it, and 3/3 is okay for 3 in white.

Lizards don't show up often in Blue if I recall, though this is rather solid. 2/3 for 3 is fine in blue, and drawing an extra card every couple turns is rather neat.

3/4 is strong for 3 in black, though starting with counters counteracts that a lot. It'll be really tricky to get it started though, as being a 1/2 means it'll only be able to take on things with 1 power.

4/3 with haste is very nice, even with the -1/-1 for attacking. That's still a 3/2 with haste, and prowess is a nice boost on top of that. This doesn't play into the -1/-1 counter theme at all though.

3/4 for 3 is strong in green, and I think you've set up those abilities wrong. The first puts a counter, taps a land, and adds G. The second removes the counter, and untaps the land. You can do this any number of times.

Overall, I'd say Tidepool Tender is the best of the lot.

Shifting Blaze seems rather strong, although I think it would actually end up being okay. I think the biggest worry is prowess. Maybe lower it to 5/3 so you'll only get a couple swings off without boosting it in some way.

Infectious mold didn't need extra power. The biggest thing was extra toughness. 3/5 would suit it fine

Arboreal weaver could easily be 3/3, and the new setup works a bit better. It does allow for a quick burst of mana, although oddly enough I'd say that 2/4 might work better to allow for 3 counters total rather than 2.

Those are called Characteristic Defining Abilities, or CDAs. And yes, they do work in all zones, although they sometimes read odd values in non-battlefield zones due to their interaction with another ability, like Nyxathid.

Nyxathid's ability doesn't work when it's not on the battlefield. In any other zone, it's always going to be a 7/7. Just like how Death's Shadow is a 13/13 when it's not on the battlefield.

The design for the card became rather fluid once the flavor started to kick in. Initially I just wanted an enchant land card that turned into a creature. Could activate very quickly with some creative sac lands, but not sure if that balances out with it flipping back and forth.
