Previously on...THE FLAKE THREAD:

Storrrryyyyytiiiiiiime

Some people got around to writing stories. Sparks were argued about again. There were skellingtons, krakens, cephalids, flake cards, and some more things. Some were bad, some were GLORIOUS. Someone's a Tolkien fag. Joke flakes. You will never fuck smoking hot coma wife. Urza is autistic.

And lots of stories:
William keeps a diary.
Gaia makes me feels
Zix is an adorable 'tard.
Anna has amnesia.
Selenra feels the sword love.
>I, DIOMEDES, invite her to join myself and Tien Sheng in battle!

And lastly:

>>OBNOXIOUS PALADINS GALORE
>Kolya, Acervus, Ariadne, Cadros and Deka.
>>THE WORST ROBIN HOODS
>Amund, Sonia, Albin, Ka'Koarm and Zenri.
>>LEAGUE OF HAPLESS ADVENTURERS
>Balbus, Anna, Symon, Corvin and Astera.
>>MULTIVERSAL WRESTLING FEDERATION
>Rakkor, Diomedes, Dyna and Ygraine (on Segovia).
>>THRILLMASTERS EXTRAORDINAIRE
>Ginger, Cala, Tomiko and Cianne.
>>CORPSEFUCKER'S COVEN
>Vronak, Wrotok, Argyle, Joth and Gwendolyn.
>>LORDS OF THAT WHICH MAKES A BLADE SHARP
>Azof, Skotonos, Irriad, Ivander, Kaina
>>INTERPLANARY MONSTER POLICE SQUAD

But now, because all snowflakes are just as good/bad as one another, Cromat is Dominaria's ASHAAAAAYAAAAAAA, and every plane has a Cromat, because this chucklefuck says so!

Four colors really screws with the formatting on the snowstorm. It doesn't fit in the color slot, which only allows for up to three colors and the origin symbol.

I feel like you could draw a lot from Sorin and Avacyn with this. It'd be *very* old walker, though. But that could be interesting in its own right, a planeswalker whose power has declined massively since the mending, with these (mostly) intensely loyal super-beings protecting a bunch of planes for you.

>>

Just remember, when Sorin created Avacyn as a permenant that doesn't unsummon, it took a lot out of Sorin. It weakened him to the point that he couldn't do anything for quite a long while.

>>
>>46882422
>>46882606

honestly the idea of oldwalkers making the Avatars makes me go "eeeeehhh."

I can't remember exactly how angels worked, but when it was announced that angels are created and can't be planeswalkers it actually really bothered me that they were shoehorning planeswalkers into being so important that they're responsible for EVERYTHING

(I can't remember if planeswalkers actually made angels, but that's besides the point)
>>
>>46882606
Sure, I just thought the discussion was about a planeswalker idea in the first place. There are plenty of beings more powerful than planeswalkers, especially post-mending.
>>
>>46875645
Will anon here, I'm always open to including more people. It's kind of stupid to make somrthing like this into a secret club clique thing.

>>

>>46882765
Go for it. Dude's learns as much as he can from everybody. Hell, I imagine he teaches somebody with great potential a little spell, comes bck in fifty years when they're better than him, and comes to learn pretty often.
>>
>>46882834
Fuck off, Nissa.
>>
>>46882711
Planeswalkers didn't make all angels, or most angels, or even a significant number of angels.
Just Avacyn and the angels of Serra's Realm were planeswaker-created.
Angels being unable to be planeswalkers is unrelated, and due to them being made of mana - they're essentially white elementals that happen to take the form of winged women.
>>
>>46882969
that actually makes me feel a lot better about the Angels-can't-be-walkers thing.

I mean it still feels weird that they can't develop sparks, but at least that's not another thing chalked up to "muh planeswalkers" instead of an actual good reason
>>
>>46882969
What about Devils, or Wyrms?
>>
>>46883133
So far, we're not aware of any sapient wurms and as far as we're aware, most devils and imps are just lesser forms of demons for red.
>>
>>46882731
You can use my flake, saint claus, if you want to
>>
>>46883060
Neither can demons, 99% of elementals (only known exception is lorwyn's flamekin), constructs, undead, or in general anything that isn't born.
>>46883133
For devils, it depends on the plane - if they're something that's born they can, if they're something that kinda spawns into existence fully formed they can't. IIRC, Ravnican devils are the former, while Innistradi devils are the latter. They also kind of need to be sapient and I have no idea how smart they're actually supposed to be.
As for the second, it depends on what you mean. If you mean 'a fancy way of saying dragon', then yes, as long as it's a sapient dragon and not a feral one. If you mean 'the creature type wurm', then no, because they're ALL nonsapient on known planes - of course, that doesn't stop you from making a plane where the giant serpentine monsters are fully capable of humanoid-level thought and having a wurm walker be from there.
>>
>>46882355
Being a rival magician to another 'walker sounds fun for her. I'm terrible at actually integrating these planeswalkers into stories with others, so I'm gunna make an effort with her.
I'm definitely gunna read those Zix writings when I'm at an actual computer. Maaaaaybe try my rusty hand at writing something too.

>>46882711
I share the same sentiment but for a different reason. I like the avatars being emergent from a plane because it highlights the magic inherent to these planes, which is a part of mtg and fantasy landscapes in general that I adore. Being coaxed out of the plane's magic by a 'walker isn't as cool to me as emerging on their own.
>>
>>46883213
Flamekin aren't strictly elementals in the same way as other elementals, Wizards separated them out as a race from 'elementals' in Lorwyn. Probably why they're the exception.

Or it could be that the walker (new or old) was responsible for rousing the Avatar in the first place, like before they were sort of slumbering in the plane's mana.
>>
I have a question regarding death and Theros.

So, we know that while Elspeth "died" she hasn't put on the mask, and her soul has not left her body (or has it just not become a dead person soul even though it did?), this means she still has her spark and whatnot.

Could it be possible for someone else to refuse the mask and stay alive? Even become a planeswalker after refusing to die? Because I've got an idea for a R/B or R/W/B flake.

>>
>>46884106
as far as I understand it, the mask doesn't kill you/send you to the afterlife, it's just a very Big Thing in the afterlife. I could be wrong, though.

Honestly if you want to write a story about someone's spark igniting after they die, you totally can. MtG canon is pretty much "well it happens because magic!" so why not right?

>>46884221
most of it I assume is the books released for older sets and the Forgotten Realms stories released on the WotC website. Or their own understanding of the planes through their own playing and others explaining it.

Oreskos at daybreak was a beautiful sight. The rays of the rising sun peeked over the horizon, slowly lighting the landscape. To Nishal, it was almost as beautiful as the razorfields. He looked out over the land, taking in as much of it as he could. He would be training with the iconoclasts again in a few hours, and he was moving about to begin his day.

As he stared into the distance a small figure, nearly indistinguishable from the shadows in the morning light, was slowly making its way towards the main thoroughfare of the leonin settlement. Its shape tickled at a faraway memory and Nishal began to sprint towards it, hastily donning his cloak and sheathed sword.

When he reached the creature, he understood why its silhouette had appeared so familiar: a myr was wandering Theros, an impossible distance from their shared home plane. Nishal felt a bubbling panic forming in his chest. If the myr had left Phyrexia, were the Phyrexians themselves free? He began scanning the horizon closely, trying to make out any otherworldly figures lurking in the morning shadows. The myr continued plodding on, ignoring the leonin and his panic. Nishal turned to stare as it trudged along on its path, turning its head as it scanned the environment.

It was looking for something.
>>
>>46885136
It's like reading code.

I like it.
>>
>>46885219
Nishal contemplated his options. If the myr had been sent by Phyrexia, it would be searching for life to pervert with Compleation. But why would they have sent a myr? Why not any one of their more qualified soldiers? And for that matter, when had the Phyrexians begun using myr? Nishal caught up to the wandering artifact, examining it closer than before. It was weatherworn and aged, and looked as though it had circled Mirrodin countless times. Or, thought Nishal, had it simply wandered countless planes? He reached out with his magic, probing the myr for any sign of insight, when he felt the immense power of a spark. Somehow, this myr had developed the ability to planeswalk! Now Nishal knew that this myr was not with the Phyrexians; had it have been, they would have stripped it down and taken the spark to give to one of their elite, or it would have been taken and given directly to one of the Praetors. He shuddered to think what would become of the multiverse if Elesh Norn developed the ability to spread her terror of a religion. However, if the myr wandered into Tethmos and was seen by Brimaz, they might react violently. And while the myr looked docile enough, Nishal knew well enough what a myr in danger was capable of.

Nishal knew what he had to do. Keeping pace with the myr, he reached out a hand and furtively touched its shoulder. When it did not immediately begin to assault him, Nishal called to mind a far-off, safe plane: Rabiah, the land of empty deserts and mysterious beings. As he began to planeswalk, he ensured that the myr came with him. As they faded from Theros and faded into Rabiah, Nishal removed his hand. He watched the myr walk away into the desert, and then began the trip back to Theros. Before he left the plane he stopped and turned back to the myr, who he could still see making its way farther into the desert. He cast a spell of protection onto the automaton, and silently wished it luck on its quest before continuing on his

One question - HOW was the message a spark? The spark isn't a physical thing you can carry.
>>
>>46885055
I'm using one of the fonts in MSE I believe. Its actually called 'Beleren'
>>46885159
Well fuck me. He's supposed to come in with 2 counters. How could I have missed that. It seems like the most easy thing to not miss. Either way yeah, thematically, dragons coming in at 3 is a little odd. But... unlike most I would say he's not exactly in 'top dragonic form'. ya'know?

>>46885341
I admit I have no idea how that actually works, that requires bit of suspension of disblief. I based the idea however on the Mightstone and Weakstone and how they contained a spark that was released when they joined with Urza's face.

>>46885522
it could be that the spark was actually implanted into the myr to be removed bt the recipient, and the senders didn't think that the myr had the sentience required to actually USE the spark after the mission can't be completed

I know that the canon works that a human can give an automaton a spark, so that could be a feasible reason the Messenger did what it did.

>>
>>46885522
A powerstone is kinda a huge deal, and that particular powerstone MIGHT have had one in it only because Yawgmoth surgically inserted it into someone who had an unignited spark and then left there for a long while, leading to the guy dying a horrible death. It was also the key to the Phyrexian gate, which may have had something to do with any spark wonkery, which we honestly don't KNOW if there was any of - it's a theory that Glacian's spark was in there and may have had something to do with Urza, but nothing more. It's more likely that Urza had a spark and that ignited on its own, while even if Glacian's was contained in the powerstone that became the Mightstone and Weakstone it laid dormant. Or perhaps was what Karn got.
Regardless, it would mean that someone on Mirrodin not only found out how to make a powerstone, but then found someone with an unignited spark and shoved said stone into them until they died of phthisis, all between Memnarch's defeat and the end of the Mirran-Phyrexian War (because it wouldn't have been BEFORE Memnarch died, since his entire thing was searching for a spark to hijack).

Not to even mention, who in their right mind would trust a myr with something as insanely valuable as a spark? I guess thats what some people call a mystery.
Anyway, many of the background details and "how" details for The Messenger are left vague on purpose, to make for fun speculation and crazy events that occur when a crazy robot wanders the planes.

Loss of life in exchange for draw has been a part of black for several years.

The second effect is literally Searing Blood, with instances of "Searing Blood" replaced with the name of the 'walker, and does in fact only trigger the secondary effect if that creature dies during the turn.

Vontrask goes around transforming people into hideous artifact creatures for experiments.
Azof wanders the Multiverse chewing up black mana wherever he goes and getting huge.
Rakkor conjures up duplicates of his posse of vampires to wreck shit wherever he goes, in a crude simulation of their previous existence.
Skotonos is an apathetic, jaded assassin looking for the perfect woman to carry his heir. Potential rapist.
Wrotok killed his brother to gitgud at necromancy. That's pretty evil.
Irriad is a mindless killing machine after being rekt by Old Phyrexia and never getting over it.
Ivander is a hateful, bitter lordling that just wants to be a werewolf that lives to rip and tear Avacyn's guts.
Makayel is an asshole that has deluded himself into worshiping New Phyrexia as deliverers.
Hakam sees himself as the savior of everyone he encounters and the ultimate hero, when in truth he's just a vain asshole trying to ignore his guilt over being such an asshole and does more harm than good.

That's a fair few villainous flakes.

I went fishing today as the stream was just right. Dipping myself under head to toe, she was hiding at a lonely bar in a quite rancorous inn with a bard who knew nothing of music but stole the crowd besides.

As a red served her colds as she smoked on a stem and bored holes in the table a thousand yards deep. I saw her die three days from then under the talon of a horned wolf, it was rather beautiful. I let her live tonight, such a rareified moment comes less often than one might believe.

It was the young bartender of flame and sorrow that I took from his world. He would die before the night is through. His life would end and in his place I left another, one whose existence in the pattern was like an island, no connections to speak of.

Oh yes, the boy of youth and fire, his life is spared tonight, and in exchange he'll never feel freedom's breath again.

I think I need to go back and find more of Zix's lore, I did read the pastebin of his meeting with Will. Anyway, here's what I have- the start of his meeting with Zix and a proposed team-up for a project. Forgive the amateurish writing, I haven't done prose in a long time.

http://pastebin.com/K0uEtCek

As for the project, I've been thinking maybe Symon and Zix teaming up to 'borrow' an important artifact from a secure location for William's attempts to probe Gaia's plane, or something about Symon cataloguing the current events on Innistrad in linear time, which William wouldn't want to do due to his limited time/focus elsewhere.

Thank you!

And as far as the Mending stuff is concerned, Gaia's plane is actually quite unique. The barriers and walls that I described in her prologue story are a metaphor for the ridiculous number of enchantments she wove around the plane. These enchantments effectively sealed her and her world off from the rest of the multiverse. They are literally bubbled in. Therefore, both she and her plane were insulated from the time rifts and by extension the Mending. She is technically still a Pre-Mending planeswalker, albeit a dormant one. So her power level is unaffected. She actually is completely oblivious to the Mending. She doesn't even know it happened.

To use a metaphor, imagine if her plain (or at least the walls surrounding it) was one giant powerful magnet. This magnet constantly emits a charge equal to the surrounding multiverse/Blind Eternities, and it is constantly adjusting its charge to match any changes that occur. Therefore, the BE/multiverse is literally repulsed from the plane. Her world does not even touch it. It is an entirely self-contained, self-sustaining bubbled-off world. However, the trade-off is that she must then be the world's sole source of power/life/mana/energy/protection. That is why she had to become the World Core.

The threat from William and his crew, is that if they manage to breach her barriers (somehow. It's not something you can brute force or even warp your way into. That is why William, who's a genius, is having such a difficult time with it.) even just SLIGHTLY, then the BE will touch her plain, allowing the Mending to flood in. When it hits her spark, she will lose the power to sustain the plane and the entire world will collapse into nothing. She may even outright die from the trauma, because of how intimately tied/woven into the plane her essence was.

Gaia-anon here. I think William would find it extremely useful to research old phyrexian portal technology and Thranian power stones. They are from a time before the Mending, when the multiverse was different in its very nature. Gaia's spark still has the "consistency/frequency" of that old multiverse. So maybe he is researching a way to get the portal technology to work when combined with a myriad of other things. Or maybe he just has a defunct portal just to see if he can learn anything at all (even if there is nothing to learn).

Hey Will-anon, we may have gone over this, but does William know that a planeswalker lives at the heart of the "Dark plane" (I'm calling it dark because he can't see it, just like we refer to dark matter in such terms because we can't see it)? And if he does, how did he figure it out?

...

But yeah, anyway I'd imagine he is currently experimenting with portal technology from any plane he can find it on.

I was thinking of something that wasn't useful by itself, but as part of a greater mechanism- perhaps some sacred artifact that can be misused to 'prop open' a passage in fluid space for a short period of time, or can link two points. Regarding the whole team Gaia vs team William thing, I was wondering how Gaia would actually get other planeswalkers to help protect her? If she's in her own sealed plane and nothing can get in or out, how would others know of her or care about preventing the breach? I ask purely out of curiosity.

I picture Zix and Symon breaking into an ancient temple, Zix deftly neutralising traps and breaching barriers while Symon deduces the correct path and pacifies the guardian beasts. Then suddenly, a wall explodes outwards in a shower of dust and rubble and a hulking figure stomps through before booming a challenge.

"COWARD! I, DIOMEDES, CHALLENGE YOU ONCE AGAIN-"

And the Symon grabs Zix by the collar and bolts down a side passage going "Shitshitshitshitshit just keep running".

Will anon here. How about getting them to document the effects of the eldritch moon due to its connections to the Eldrazi and colorless mana, or perhaps steal a part of the destroyed Helvault.

But it's still a stinky turd. Compared the two of them to anything else at the same time and they both come out tasting, smelling and looking the same.

As gaia anon, I absolutely love it. Snarky and fun. Just perfect.

I think this is the start of a wonderful partnership.

I think he knows, but not that it's Gaia. I still don't know if he'd care.

By now Will just times his adventures to take advantage of it. Some massive dragon blocking your way to stealing some minor bit of his horde. Wait for DIOMEDES to show up and fight the dragon instead. I believe that no one could actually beat DIOMEDES in a straight fight.

Probably a bit late, but I created a weird planeswalker.

I wasn't sure if weirds could 'walk, so I gave him a kinda forced "lab experiment gone wrong", minus the fact that it wasn't his lab.

A simple song leads one from their own in time of trouble otherwise fatal, and the price they pay they pay on behalf of someone better than them for something better than them now matter how better they are than the others.

A price left eternally underpaid, and acknowledged as so. Say what others will.
>>
>>46893271
A weird normally can't, no, so going for 'turned into one' was a good idea.
>>
>>46893264
I think with enough probing and timeless studies, the old man has figured out this is the work of an old walker and used some deduction to figure out how something so powerful is still at work. Nothing easy, but when you can go to a hundred planes, set thousands of students on a problem, and fast forward to the answer, it works.

How many Snowflakes have been to New Phyrexia. And Phyrexiafags who insisted on having their flakes promote Phyrexia, how are they going about it?

Symonanon here, that's what I was originally thinking- perhaps he would direct Symon to document the effects of the eldritch moon and the cryptoliths on Innistrad's mana, and prevent other walkers from interfering in the background. As payment, Symon could receive ancient texts that hint at long-lost planes and fantastic landscapes awaiting rediscovery, mere scrap paper to William. He'd be hooked, and could even be persuaded into tagging along with Zix if they need an extra pair of hands... though I think if he knew the exact nature of Will's mission, he'd probably back out or switch sides.

I'm starting to picture Symon as a put-upon temp that gets coerced into helping other planeswalkers whenever they need a guide, scout, or specific information about a creature or plane. He just wants to go hiking and chase monsters, he doesn't have time for all these grandiose dramas and honorable duels! Why won't everyone just leave him alone?

Zix was born there. At least two other come to mind who have some relation to it; Unit IV and Makayel.

>I was wondering how Gaia would actually get other planeswalkers to help protect her? If she's in her own sealed plane and nothing can get in or out, how would others know of her or care about preventing the breach? I ask purely out of curiosity.

You're right in that this is a major problem for Gaia. Aside from William and his crew, there likely isn't anyone else left alive who knows of her plane's existence. She has absolutely no outside agents whatsoever. However, she does have an old contingency plan as standby. No one but Gaia knows this, but deep in the core of her world (in the same space that she occupies) there is a sealed portal. It connects to an unnamed buffer space that Gaia either found or created (not sure). But this portal only flows one way. Once someone goes through, they can't get back.

Queue Belagir. Belagir does not have a spark. But there is a void in his soul where a spark should be. It's kind of a spacial anomaly. If he comes into contact with the Blind Eternities, the aether would rush to fill that anomaly. It would become a spark and he would ascend. He's the only living person on the dark plane that has a soul like this. So soon Gaia will come to him in a dream and explain everything. She'll give him a choice as to whether or not he wants to leave his beloved home (never to return) or if he wants to fill the void in his soul and save his plane. He'll probably agree to leave (reluctantly) and go through the portal. The buffer space is in contact with the BE, so he will gain a spark. Then I imagine he will investigate the threat and gather allies.

So would he talk about it? I'm putting Phyrexian watermarked cards along with other artifacts from Mirrodin blocks into my Kurkesh EDH but Anna hasn't been to Mirrodin yet.

Seems logical. I accept your logic.

>though I think if he knew the exact nature of Will's mission, he'd probably back out or switch sides.
My goal is to now have a write-fest where Belagir tells Symon the truth and gets him to join Gaia's team.

Also, I'm thinking of removing Belagir's artifact affinity. It just doesn't make sense.

>how does gaia protect herself?
Also, I would like to point to the last sentence of Gaia-anon's first story.

>And from deep within the core of a long forgotten plane, Gaia began to push back...

It sounds like she's more active in fighting off Will than just sitting there like a dead cat. It sounds like she's actually personally doing something.

I'm just going to post this here cause I feel like it.

And I want to apologize ahead of time for spamming up the thread with Gaia stuff. I'm not trying to take the attention from other flakes or anything. It's just been awhile since I've been this excited about building a character, and I want to role with it.

Anyway.

So this is an image of Gaia from way back when. This is her just a few centuries after her ascension. The thought of making a plane wasn't even a blip on her radar at that point. She was in the spring of her youth as a planeswalker, and she explored the planes with vigor. This was long before she was a domain walker even. I imagine back in those days she was WG, or maybe RG. And she chose to wear the same form she had before her ascension, to honor her kin.

Anyway. Just thought I'd share it for anyone who's interested.

lelwat? Care to elaborate on that one?

To add something I forgot:

She didn't even go by Gaia back then. She still went by her birth name, which I haven't worked out yet (I've been pouring over Quenya dictionaries trying to find something suitable).
