I'm trying to make some bases for some deathwatch terminators and I want it to look like deck plating. I'm using this stuff for the plating itself and I'm going to put some brass rod as piping and some grating to break up the space left over.
Does anyone have any other suggestions on what to use for deck plating bases?

Only took a year, but I managed to paint almost all of the basic Nephilim units. Still have to deal with Nekima, Tuco, one Young Neph and some assorted neverborn support. Not amazing, but decent tabletop- I'll take it when painting for 30 minutes leaves me in physical pain.

Finally finished my verminlord! I'll never get to use this guy since everyone I play with hates everything to do with the End Times. I've pointed out this isn't a new unit, it's just a rules update of the existing (shit) verminlord, but nope, still won't let me use them.

Just waiting for his scenic base to arrive, then he'll be complete. He's got faults but I love how he turned out, it was a fun experiment.

I'm sorry but... this looks very little like a warp spider. The gun doesn't even come close to the profile of a deathspinner, looking more like an eldar version of a tank autocannon.

You have a deldar with a poorly-converted oversized gun and a turd of greenstuff on the shoulder.

Mining style armour (left), or shades of black ( right)? Also I'm not certain as bright blue as a spot colour. What would look good in contrast to greys, blacks, flesh, and purple?
>>
>>46856468
the green stuff is supposed to be the spiders breathing toob.
As for the gun, Have you seen the profile of the deathspinner? It's looks like a heavy weapon stock with a thick tube at the end.
Also, I hate the warp spider model, so not looking exactly like one is not a downside to me.

Does it look like a thing with a hightech jumppack, a gasmask and a big weird gun?
>>
>>46854217
I need to catch up ...
>>
>>46856974
I think personally the guns too long and just looks comical, it also looks sort of wonkey
>>
>>46855690
Needs more backpack, less gun length. Right now it's got a very strong resemblance to a vindicare assassin.
>>
>>46857194
>>46857165
the gun is longer than I'd like. I'm going to take out the middle part on the next one, though keeping the grip on that might be a little delicate.

And the backpack does need more, but I'm going back and forth on what to add to it. I've got scourge bat wings, and lots of tubes rods and spikes.

And greenstuff, but I know I'm prety limited in my ability to work there, so I'd like it to be mainly bits with greenstuf at most filling in between.

The gun and crab backpacks are some of the two most prolific parts of the warpspider's look.

If you're not into the backpack, at least try to get the gun barrel right so that it doesn't look like one of several of the eldar's oval-headed heavy weapons. Just sculpt some lantern frames and beads on a round barrel and add barbs to the end.

Also using water to frequently wet your tools will make sculpting greenstuff way easier for you. For basic tubes, less can be more since it's easier to add a bit than it is to remove greenstuff without removing the entire part.
>>
>>46857583
it's not the backpack I dislike. it's overall blockyness of the torso and the helmet looking way to big with the blade fangs things. I'm want to make something reminicent of the backpack, but I've yet to find a thing that works.

Good Idea about the lantern frame and barbs, that I whould be able to do.
And I actually went back and smoothed out the greenstuff after I took the pic, as the zoom made my mistake much more visable.

Some of the armor looks a couple bits away from being ork mega armor, but these guys look mostly fantasy, and having faces more than scowling/shouting with tiny slits for beady eyes really improves the expressiveness. I'd check out the original tutorial by Mister Justin from SWM this is based on desu.

I do think the models are tabletop standard in that they have more than three colors and are reasonably well painted.
If you have been out of the game for the last decade check out the GW or Armypainter washes. They are not washes in the oldschool way, but diluted with acrylic medium so behave a little different than water with something in it to break surface tension.

Basically GW's old Devlan Mud or Armypainters Dark Tone are liquid talent and are gonna save you loads of time, especially for painting assembly line style.

I'm planning on stretching my terrain paneling even further (again, will post pics but this may be a next week project).

By using display board foam and cutting holes out and inserting panels into the missing sections I can functionally 1.5x the amount of terrain per terrain kit. I have sprues from Citadel and Pegasus lying around and I'm going to liberally combine the two.

The plan is for the display board foam parts is to mix cheap black paint with baking soda and then dry brushing up to grey to make it look like cement.

The drawings I did look like it'll turn out alright.

Got the idea from a Hirst Arts thing.
>>
>>46877146
Not sure since I haven't bought any of the new (not really anymore) paints yet. I think Agrax is a little more yellowish, whereas Devalan mud is a little redder and darker.
Kind of like the difference between burned umber and burned sienna.

Here's the basing to that Chaos Spawn I was talking about earlier. I still need to add grass and snow.

This was based with baking soda. With the buildings it won't be as course. I'm planning to spread it a bit thinner and mix with the paint itself. This was based with a plain soda and glue mix then painted.

Apologies for the file size.
>>
>>46877251
I started with Dark Angels in 2nd ed and pretty much stayed with them. My Skaven are, well, they're rats. Not much individuality or special snowflake schemes for them.

I never got the appeal of homebrew chapters because in my experience are either cringey as fuck or made by people with appalling taste and no sense for colour coordination.

And I agree. I got a bunch of the shoulderpads and the Ravenwing sprues and they're awesome.
>>
>>46877251
>have you also found yourself edging away from homebrew factions
My personal theory is that as you get older you have less time to fantasize and flesh out your DIY faction. Same goes for playing games as those tend to influence the narrative of your army's background as well.

Basically the less time you have the more appealing official factions are, because they stay alive even if you don't play. There is always new material and stuff they did, even if you didn't have time to play or write it yourself.

So in a word yes, I'm kinda the same. But I also get off on converting and sculpting so I constantly have new ideas for special snowflakes that I want to realize with plastic and putty.
>>
>>46877369
I agree.

The only thing I have homebrewed is a Chaos Warband and I guess a small subset of Blackmane's Great Company (but that's just fleshing out a space intentionally left blank).

With the warband I just say they are very small and are in the process of taking over a planet VERY slowly because the number of marines are less than 50. I just wanted a deep purple and gold color scheme and nothing seemed to really allow for that that was canon.

I did use the washes, Nuln Oil on weapon blades, gloves and sash and Agrax on everything brownish + faces.

>>
>>46879498
Honestly, that's a lot nicer than a lot of people's first efforts

I'd work on getting a more consistent blue over the washed areas. Obviously you want to keep the recesses darker, but carefully painting on a few layers of watered down blue will improve their appearance immensely.

For the gold, try going for a rhinox hide base and then drybrushing the gold over the top of that. Alternatively, give them a wash with seraphim sepia to add a bit of depth to them.

The other anons are right about the base too.

Overall, it's a very solid effort for a complete novice and you'll probably find that you'll improve significantly as you go along

I'd tone down the highlighting around the mouth/grill area. You seem to have missed to highlight some edges around the feet and knees. A good tip for doing edge highlights is to paint them with the "side" of your brush, that way you only hit the very edge.

I usually brace my hand/arm holding the miniature against the table, and the little and ringfingers of my painting hand brace against the hand holding the miniature.

If you stay dedicated to improving your painting then you'll be putting out some really nice work in no time at all.

These things will never not be creepy.

How long does it take you to prepare a rank&file dude for priming? LotR minis are beautiful but some have the most horrible mold lines. I may spend up to 15 min filing and cutting per soldier.

>>46878111
Will try some more washes, thanks anon.

Ty :3

I'm both horrified and amused by these. Keep going anon.

I was thinking of doing Hybrids with a red exoskeleton but I'm not sure what color should the skin be. A mix of skin pink and red? Any paint suggestion?

What do I need to use in order to cut the models with having small bumps on them? The scissors don´t work that well.

Are you running them as Fenrisian wolves or Wulfen with no upgrades?
>>
>>46881347
Thanks. Need to buy one then.

Nothing, aside from the fact, that I´m a autist who can´t really write his point coherently?
>>
>>46881204
Cutters, the kind you would use on copper wire. Thinner the blades and deeper the angle, the better. Buy some from your local hardware store if you don't have them. The ones GW and a like are good but overly expensive
>>
>>46880057
Yeah, that's pretty much it. And if you don't enjoy petty abuse and being the punching bag for other anons who never fucking ever post a picture of their own work because pointing fingers is just that much easier, then you can just fuck off to reddit.

That's what i've done and it's really nice over there. People are actually constructive and helpful instead of spending most of their time inventing new ways to tell you how you should end your live for painting model soilders in a somewhat less then perfect fashion.
>>
>>46881378
Get it from ebay and don't buy the overpriced GW version. You probably can get one for less than 2 dollar.

Little bits of sprue left over are a thing that happens, even with proper clippers. To see how to scrape them off (as well as moldlines) see what Saint Duncan is doing at 2:40 in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfToNrfoDh4

(Do NOT buy the citadel moldline remove that he's using unless you hate money.)
>>
>>46881367

I'm just building them for fun really.
>>

>the citadel moldline remove

The existense of that "tool" already insults me. The backside of a hobby blade does exactly the same thing.

Progress on my Frostgrave soldiers. I have fully magnetized all of these dudes, which works nicely thanks to how cheap these magnets are.
>>
>>46881511
Looking good.

Really interested by Frostgrave - have you had a chance to play it yet? How is it?
>>
>>46881531
Not him. Its basically mordheim light. (only your leader will level up) Really fun and easy to get into.
>>

Cool, was thinking of buying a big box of Perry Miniatures mercenaries for my group to use as soldiers and get everyone to get their own wizard.
