You are Ur'shal, Chieftain of the Stonetusk Clan and Warlord of the Wastes, and today you march to war. The Earth Dragon Slaagyr has been an annoyance for long enough, and with one of his lieutenants dead, another heavily questioning her loyalty, and a route to his territory scouted, it's time to remove him once and for all.

To make this work however, you will need to take the majority of your clan with you, save for a skeleton crew remaining behind to police the slaves and watch over the warbeasts in your absence, the tunnels being ill-suited for such large creatures. Za'ria has volunteered to remain behind to handle the slaves herself, which means you should be safe from any attempted uprisings in your absence at least, and according to your latest intelligence Xipil has still made no moves to attack, so you shouldn't require a sturdy defensive force for a little while at least.

The full moon will arrive in three days, time enough to march north and carry out the Coven's sacrifice to their god, ensuring power enough to tear a route through the mountain directly to the dragon's lair from the cultists' tunnels beneath. The only question now is whether you wish to make any other preparations before leaving, or bring any of your other slaves along with you.

Good afternoon, Lordy!

Do any of our slaves even have nightvision worth shit?
Going by pure memory I'd probably consider Bryna, if she thinks her underground experience could help at all, and Izeta just because she might have good senses.

Bryna is pregnant, bear in mind.

Izeta can see just fine underground, yes.

In that case I'd rather just have another person with supernatural senses around.
Vor'zal proved the value of that against the goat demons before.

Okay, so I'm seeing suggestions to bring Izeta, to summon dust devils to guard the camp, to bring Aurora (which would require keeping her bound, she's still being strangely resistant), and to bring Isyil. Let's have some votes on that then.

The Aurora thing seems like an outright terrible idea.
We're first going to face the cultists, who don't give a shit aobut Aurora, and then the dragon, who only preteded to give a shit about Aurora as long as it was useful.
So It's basically voting to take along a potential hazard for no benefit at all.

Hobo god doesn't help you feel safer.
He tells you to tough the fuck up and don't be a pussy.
You ask him for help when there's actual shit to endure not when you're not feeling comfortable.

We've also done literally nothing to reinforce Isyil's loyalty yet and she has serious reason not to help us and even stand in our way on this.
Taking her along is also pretty stupid.

Aza'ra can summon them for a shorter period of time on the fly, she'd just need to do a longer ritual to bind them to a particular location (such as your camp) for a prolonged period.

>>
>>46750847
She summoned them to in order to sit out the shitty state she was left in for a few decades.
That's significantly different from summoning them so the orcs staying in camp don't have to work as much.
>>
You catch up with Aza'ra, the priestess sat dozing in the shade of one of the huts, apparently unconcerned by the clamour surrounding her as your orcs prepare to march. The priestess cracks one eye open as you approach, giving you a lazy nod.

“Enjoying yourself,” you grunt.

“Got to rest when you can, never know when some chieftain's going to come ask you for a favor. So what's it to be? Scouting? Magic? One last fuck before battle?”

“Magic, this time,” you snort.

“Pity, so what kind of miracle do you want me to ask of Skor'oz Zik today?”

“Even if Xipil isn't preparing an attack, it's still a risk leaving the camp mostly unguarded, we have many whelps and slaves that can't be moved, and it would be a serious blow to the clan if anything were to happen to them,” you explain, Aza'ra giving a nod.

“Agreed, you want me to summon up some added defenses then. I'm sure I can do that, no doubt Ku'zag will be happy to provide me all the ingredients I need for a proper ritual,” Aza'ra chuckles, hopping to her feet and dusting herself off.

Leaving the priestess to her work, you return to your hut, stepping through the doorway to take one last good look at your harem before battle. K'zala gives you a small smile from the far end, adjusting her armor, Sho'ka and Ya'zada nowhere to be seen, most likely taking one last chance to check on the warbeasts and to yell at your warriors respectively.

“Ready?” you ask, the slim female giving a nod.

“I am, training has been hard, but I know I'll make you proud.”

Her voice remains quiet as ever, but despite that, the sense of uncertainty in her tone has faded.

(cont)
>>
>>46751250
Grinning, you turn your attention to your slaves.

“Izeta, Isyil, you'll be coming with us too. We could use the extra power.”

“Oh, am I going to war?” Isyil smirks, uncoiling herself from where she lounges on the floor.

The skinchanger gives a simple “yes alpha,” as she springs to her feet, her yellow eyes fixed intently on you.

“Good, then we leave in an hour. We should be back within the week, with Slaagyr's head,” you grin, turning your face to Aurora, the sorceress giving a laugh tinged with madness, shaking her head.

“Fool, you all go to your death, and I who have remained loyal through these ordeals shall return to the side of my glorious god,” she sneers.

Snorting, you seize hold of her chin, raising her face up to face yours.

“When I return, I'll expect a suitable apology for your lack of faith in my power.”

You set off that evening, your clan quite a sight to behold marching to war in force. As the coven require a view of the night sky to properly carry out their ritual, the plan is to march aboveground until you reach the edge of Slaagyr's territory. Your scouts have located enough routes from the surface to the old dwarven network to ensure you can slip down into the earth once your work is done.

The march is a peaceful one, all things considered. Even the most belligerent beasts of the wasteland know better than to assault an entire clan of orcs, and your scouts spot no signs of further incursion from Joachim's cultists or any of Slaagyr's other forces. As you reach the edge of the mountains, you filter your forces down into the tunnels, a tight fit for so many, but necessary, who knows how many eyes the dragon has in the mountains.

That won't work. She's not an orc to get challenged like this.
I think we should offer her and anyone under her vassalship like>>46751752 suggested. With some trade agreement and safe passage through our territory with it to sweeten the deal.
>>
The first day through the tunnels passes well, and your advance scouts perform admirably, picking off two small patrols of cultists who've strayed far from Joachim's base. According to your scouts reports, and to the information you gained from Sascha, you should be little more than a few hours from Slaagyr's camp, and just in time too, with the night of the ritual approaching.

You pass through a cavern to the surface your scouts located on their earlier forays into Slaagyr's territory, picking out a secluded mountain valley to serve for the coven's purposes. The sacrifice is pinned down to a flat stone, as the coven's chanting reaches fever pitch, Ashuris giving a loud guttural cry as she raises her dagger overhead, plunging it into the heart of the unfortunate human upon the altar.

Once again you feel that strange, overpowering presence, the eye of a god turned upon you, if only for a moment, hungry for blood and eager for chaos. If it's chaos he wants, you'll certainly be providing plenty of sport for the ogre god before the night is out.

“The power of Ylugri flows through us, I would advice you to make haste, mas-... chieftain,” Ashuris huffs, clenching a fist, the air around her and her fellow coven members crackling with divine power.

“Good. March, we kill the cultists and the dragon tonight,” you roar to your forces, the army passing back down into the earth.

You smell the cult before you even spot their gory warnings, rotten entrails and mangled limbs strung up to ward off the weak-willed. The whole place reeks of disease and mouldering flesh, seeming to settle on your skin in a palpable layer of filth, worming its way in with every breath until you can taste it.

Some among your clan start to look uneasy, making the symbol of Zul'orok Zhar's hammer upon their chests, as Raka snarls next to you, ears pinned back against his head.

You growl, spitting out a foul-tasting gob of phlegm, gripping your axe tight as you press forward. As you push further forward, it only grows more loathsome, fat-bodied flies buzz lazily through the air, bumping against you in their lethargic state, bloated fat-bodied maggots and worms writhe underfoot, and even the earth beneath your feet seems to ooze with pestilence, brackish filth pooling around your boots with every step.

You step out into a great cavern at the head of your forces, mounds of corpses piled high at its center, the newer, fresher ones heaped upon the rotting offal beneath, all sitting atop of a carpet of bones picked clean.

“Trespassers, meat for the banquest,” a voice shrieks, a ragged, emaciated figure rising up from amidst the carcasses, a makeshift bone dagger clutched in his hand.

“More for the feast, celebrants for the coming of the horned one,” another howls, as yet more pull themselves free of the cadaverous mass, burrowing free like freshly hatched larvae.

“Great Slaagyr consorts with such as these? He shames his divine heritage,” Isyil mutters to herself beside you. You aren't certain you appreciate the use of 'great' at the start of the wyrm's name, but you have more pressing concerns at present.

You snarl, your forces drawing together, weapons readied as the cultists surge forth from the pile, more and more joining their numbers as they charge, shrieking, a wave of wild eyes and rotten fangs.

We came to kill Slaggyr and his army, these are just unorganized leeches, they only serve as a defense by being in the way, they won't bother to defend the others once we get through them. Spending time here will allow Slaggyr to learn of our presence and start setting up defenses and organizing his army.
>>46752138
Orcish Fury is especially retarded right now, we don't want to spend that much energy here and be tired afterwards, and we need to not be baited into their tricky magic bullshit.
>>
>>46752191
Not that anon, but I don't think you realize how much of an Übermensch Ur is supposed to be, or that there have been examples of orcs working with allies without enslaving them.
If it's smart and makes sense and doesn't endanger our position as chief too much, then we shouldn't refrain from doing it just because it's not a usual thing for orcs to do, whatever it is.
>>
>>46752150
It's not about making her a permanent vassal that would be untouchable.
It's about creating a division in their forces so we don't have to fight so many at once.
>>
>>46752214

I'm quite aware of these examples. Just because there are examples of exceptional slaves doesn't mean we should be considering vassalizing every non-orc community we come across. We're still really small, not even the size of one of the great cities to the south. It's more beneficial for us to take slaves and use them to breed then it is to vassalize these people because "da leader impresses us."
>>
>>46752258
It's just because anon has a crush on snowfox.
>>
>>46752191
This whole talk started because complete enslavement could be not the best way of action right now, considering we want to control both jungle area and ore in the mountains, and just having slaves everywhere could overstretch us.
>>
>>46752258
>doesn't mean we should be considering vassalizing every non-orc community we come across
And I'm not saying to do so.
But we are already incapable of policing all of "our" territory (the wastes are ours in name only, really), so once we lose orcs in this war, there's no way we would be able to hold control of this mountain area.
Only way we could keep control of it is by leaving some orcs here and depending on on some of the human leaders' cooperation, we just don't have enough people to do it all by ourselves.
>>
>>46752214
Just curious, but why. What do we gain from having a "protectorate" at all. We aren't that strong, on a global scale. And the long term goal is, really, get strong enough to cross the wall. That means more bodies in our immediate clan, not wasting time and resources on some useless backwater

The long term goal is world domination.
The less long term goal is control of the continent/island.
Having control of the wastes is good, and it's retarded to give it up to go wage war across the war, we can't blitz the human kingdoms so we'll need a home base, and the wastes are a nice place since they're harsh and people aren't likely to come after us there.
There's also lots of exotic animals and people and treasures to still fin dhere, so controlling the wastes and everywhere else is a good goal.

“Vermin,” you snarl, hefting your axe.

You don't really want to waste time here, but you also don't want to give these insects a chance to swarm your flank while you're fighting a more worthy foe, better to purge all of them here and now.

“Kill them all, this cult dies tonight,” you roar, your forces surging forward to meet the shrieking cultists.

Spurred on by zealous fervor and madness they may be, they are no warriors, and for all their shrieking, wailing and flailing, they shatter against your line. You lay into them, hacking and cleaving with your axe. It's almost hard to tell, withered and sickly as they are, but there's no distinction of gender between the cultists, male and female alike throwing themselves onto the blades of your warriors. It's unfortunate, some of these females may once have made fine slaves for your clan, but their cannibal god has hollowed them out, rotted them from within, left the unfit to bear whelps. Joachim will answer for every last female lost to his twisted faith.

Soon the howls fade, the last remnants of the cultists, even mangled and bleeding, still trying desperately to stab at the ankles of your warriors as they systematically put them out of their misery. The cavern is once again quiet, save for the squirming of maggots and the buzz of flies, and without so much as an injury on your side, a good omen for the battles to come.

“That way leads closer to Slaagyr's lair, that way to Joachim's... temple,” one of the scouts explains, as you press on through the tunnels, coming to a split in the path.

It's a detour, but removing Joachim is still a valuable use of your time, and with the speed you cut through the first horde of his cultists, you've got plenty of hours of the night left.

“Joachim can wait, we deal with Slaagyr before he can prepare for us,” you grunt, leading your forces forward through the winding tunnels, chopping down noisome effigies and carving your way through more of the cultists as you go.

“Here, this is it,” Ashuris mutters, as you turn a corner into another large cavern, carved stone revealing some long-abandoned dwarven structure cut into the rock.

Your ogress slave kneels, resting a hand against the rock, her eyes drifting shut.

“Above, far above, a great cavern high in the mountain, that must be where the dragon is hiding,” she nods.

“Good, do it,” you grunt, the coven forming a circle as they start to chant, rough guttural speech echoing off the carved stone of the cavern walls, the very earth around you seeming to ripple as the chanting grows louder, harsher.

The three ogresses throw up their arms as one, roaring their god's name, the entire wall of the cavern ripping itself open, parting to reveal a smooth path of freshly shaped stone spiralling up into the mountain.

The coven collapse to their knees, drenched in sweat, your slave wiping a hand across her face as she gasps for breath.

“It's done, but even for those of our skill, it took all we had, don't expect anything more from me tonight,” Ashuris grumbles, the proud ogress pulling herself to her feet shakily.

You grin, giving your slave's pale rear a squeeze as you pass.

“You've done more than enough, Ashuris, you rest now and watch your master handle the rest.”

“He'll definitely know we're coming after that, every spellcaster for miles will have felt that, it couldn't be avoided,” she sighs, as you press on up the newly formed path.

It's a long march, the winding path being made flat enough to ensure you could lead an army up it means it winds countless dozens of times up the mountain. Eventually however, you spot light at the end of the tunnel, the path opening out into a great carved chamber, the vaulted stone ceiling far overhead.

The walls glitter with statuettes, urns, trophies of the dragon held upon stands, meticulously organized, a great arched doorway on the wall to the east of the impromptu entrance your slaves ripped into the dragon's home. The finery of the chamber is almost enough to distract you, and you are thankful for your choice to bring the skinchanger slave along as she barks out a warning, just in time for your warriors to raise shields and blades.

With a roar, a shape swoops down from the top of one of the massive pillars supporting the ceiling of the chamber, a winged humanoid shape leading a whole flock of its brethren. Their skin is lumpy grey, rocky nodules growing from tough leathery flesh, their faces the exaggerated leering maws of predators straight out of a whelp's tale.

“Gargoyles. Careful chieftain, I doubt most of our warriors have weapons that can punch through those hides,” Aza'ra shouts out.

>Order your warriors to stay defensive and focus on staying unharmed, leave it to your spellcasters and anyone with enchanted weaponry to handle the beasts
>Order your warriors to try and drag down the Gargoyles, even if they can't hurt them, they can pin them for a fatal strike

>>46753246
>>Order your warriors to try and drag down the Gargoyles, even if they can't hurt them, they can pin them for a fatal strike
Use nets and ropes and the weight of our orcs.
The ones without good enough weapons go in with shields and ropes to disable them for the ones that can hurt them, while trying to avoid injuries.
The spellcasters and more sneaky gits can meanwhile feel around the place for traps, and look for Slaggyr.
Try to have at least one third of our forces looking for the rest of his army, see how the ogres are forming up outside of the cavern.

Be careful and use our superior numbers.
Maybe have the tankiest and meanest ones tank the hits to slow the attacking gargoyle down so others can net it and weigh it down so it can't fly off.
K'zala's kind can probably go for fatal strikes so as to make their execution as fast as possible.

“Bring them down, hold them so we can finish them,” you command, your orcs bracing for the first dive of the gargoyles.

The creatures give a earsplitting shrieks as they swoop down from the ceiling, gnarled claws outstretched. Your warriors are ready for them, or as ready as they can be, but the sheer force of the assault still sends them reeling, the creature's heavy stone-skinned bodies, staying aloft solely by innate magical power, drive straight into your forces, oblivious to the blades, spears and shields arrayed against them.

Several of your warriors die instantly, ripped to shreds by razor-sharp talons and gnashing teeth, and many more suffer broken bones and lacerated flesh from wild thrashing and heavy buffeting wings. Still, your warriors persevere, and many of the gargoyles realize too late in their bloody revels that they have allowed their enemies to regroup, nets, spears and raw orcish brawn pinning the shrieking creatures in place as they struggle to free themselves.

Those amongst your number blessed with more formidable weapons move amongst the troops, dispatching the trapped gargoyles, Dru'ak's maul caving in the stony flesh and enchanted bone as he reduces one of the gargoyles' skulls to a gory paste. You join in as well, cleaving through the neck of a gargoyle as it throws off the orc grappling it to try and make its escape.

The flock swoops back up to the ceiling of the chamber, their number halved already, and while they've inflicted more than a few casualties on you, the way they linger, delaying the assault, makes you think they know all too well how another attack will go.

They cling to the top of the pillars, shrieking and howling, clawing at the stone, unwilling to fly down again but safe from your attacks at their height.

(cont)
>>
>>46753637
Then you hear another sound, the thump of heavy footsteps echoing forth from beyond the chamber, dozens of sets marching in perfect unison.

“He's throwing everything he's got at us, it seems,” Zo'rok snorts, as you turn to the archway, strange humanoid constructs of stone and metal plating marching in, spears levelled, an imprint of a dragon pressed into each of their breastplates.

You suspect that the gargoyles will not remain out of the fight once you join battle with the constructs, but slow as they are, you at least have a few moments to think up a plan before they reach you.

>Write-in

We need to use magic to kill the gargoyles. The hardest orcs need to brace for the constructs.

>>
>>46753766
Can we bring down the pillars to make th constructs come into a single line? Should be easier to handle that way.
>>
>>46753766
Hmm, can we like, topple the bottom right and bottom center pillars, make them fall to the right? So as to cut off the construct's path and make it easier to control the engagement, and maybe even kill some gargoyles. I assume our orcs are better at climbing rubble than constructs.
Or would that weaken the structure of the cave too much?
I just think controlling the way we engage would be advantageous.

Maybe we could try to create a seemingly weak point for the gargoyles to attack, then have one or two of our casters do a massive spell to take out several gargoyles at once then clean up the strugglers?
>>
>>46753843
Pillars usual hold up the ceiling.
>>
Bear in mind that these pillars are huge. This is a chamber large enough to hold over three hundred orcs. The coven is about the only way you could fell one of those pillars, and they're all exhausted.
>>
>>46753645
Have mages shoot down the gargoyles, then lure the stone army out of their hallway, go around and leave them behind us. They are slow so they will have trouble to follow.

Looks like using magic on the gargoyles and sending your toughest orcs forward to meet the constructs wins.

Mentioned quest age since it'd be more likely for the older quest to have the trip 20's earlier. Interesting that its not the case, though its only a month difference.

“Dru'ak, with me, Iron Warriors, we face the constructs,” you bark, bringing your honorguard and the more heavily armored Zol'gor Tor worshippers to the front lines, facing the approaching constructs.

“Sorcerers, focus your magic on the gargoyles,” you shout, as the constructs level spears, closing in.

The chamber erupts into a cacophony as the first volley of magic is unleashed. Bra'kur, always eager to show off his prowess, hurls a great bolt of lightning at the nearest of the gargoyles, the force of the blast tearing right through the stony hide of the beast, reducing its chest to a scorched ruin as it plummets to earth.

The gargoyles take flight, shrieking and howling, throwing themselves at your forces once more now that the ceiling has proven to be no sanctuary for them. The noise only grows more overwhelming as Aza'ra and the younger shaman add their magic to the assault, reducing the gargoyles to lumpy, ruined corpses upon the chamber floor.

You have no time to watch the rest of that battle however, as the constructs reach you, the lumbering stone figures marching forward with singleminded purpose. With a roar, you lead the attack against them, smashing aside a steel-tipped spearhead on your upswing, twisting the greataxe to bring it down upon the shoulder of the construct. The enchanted edge shears metal and splinters stone, cracking the thing in two as your axe bites deep.

Fortunately, the things seem to be less durable than they might first appear, you suppose that Slaagyr lacks the power to create a truly invincible fighting force. Still, they are formidable, and were they not facing the best your clan had to offer you might well be suffering heavy losses. As it is, your honorguard and the make slow, steady progress, matching enchanted muscle with orcish power, drawing the lumbering constructs in and taking them apart.

Aside from a few minor injuries, so far the conflict goes well. Of course, you have your doubts that this is the last trick the dragon has in store for you.

Sure enough, no sooner has the thought crossed your mind, than one more noise joins the din of battle, a croaking, braying howl. You look past the constructs, to the antechamber beyond, a massive beast squeezing its way out through one of the smaller doorways off from the room.

It must be twelve foot of heavy, ropy muscle, and manages to be intimidating in spite of its bizarre appearance. It has a donkey's head, two great bulging frog-like eyes protruding from the sides of long face, a long serpentine tail behind it, and a hide of mottled blue and purple, great gold feathers sprouting from the back of its powerful arms into vestigial wings.

“What the fuck is that thing?” you grunt, almost so caught up in the strangeness of the creature that you just barely manage to parry a stab from one of the constructs, caving in its faceplate as you ram a fist into its stony skull, dropping it to the ground.

“Fuck knows,” Dru'ak grunts, as the thing gives another braying cry, charging straight for you, barrelling through the constructs which struggle to draw themselves back into formation.

“Woah, that's a new one, even for me,” Aza'ra's voice laughs.

If even the well-travelled priestess has never come across such a thing, it must be quite a rarity the dragon has acquired. It's just a shame the head of the thing looks so... silly, you aren't even sure you want it as a trophy.

I'm imaging a bunch of orcish gods gathered around and cheering for the first interesting fight in a long time.

That's why we're doing so well
