FIRST FOR IRON HANDS
Does anyone have Eisenkern Valkir unassembled as well as some 40k bits?
I'd be interested in seeing the front and size profiles of their torso part next to space marine torsos, both their halves and completed/dryfitted if possible.
I want a singular mini for D&D, and my friend will probably also be getting a singular mini
What is the price difference between buying a prepainted mini and buying an unpainted one plus paint? Also, what's the time span of the learning curve?
>>46489763
>Also, what's the time span of the learning curve?
Just shy of 25 years, and I didn't really get that much better in between.
>>46489804
Whats a good site to browse prepainted minis?
>>46489595
I don't have the kit, but here's a size comparison pic

If you paint regularly is goes a lot faster than 15 years...
But if you have no interest in painting as a hobby it's a moot point to try and get into it. If you just need singles I'd recommend looking into commission painting. I.e. you paint a guy to paint your figure for you.
For prepainted ones the only ones I can really think of are Clix miniatures. They tend to look like shit though.
How should I paint shiny alpha legion? Like metallic blue/green. I don't have an airbrush so I can't figure out how. Suggestions?
>>46489912
>15 years
25 I meant.
>you paint a guy
pay him is what I meant of course
Damn.
>>46489916
Have you thought about using inks? Stronger pigment than a wash and no surface tension. Great for tinting.
Some people just apply mutiple layers of GW washes over metallic base paints though. Works too. You can also buy irridiscent or metallic pigments and mix your own special recipe if you are into that.

I have Space Marines older than you, and I bought them when they were new in the blister.
>>46490054
Being a 20 year old guy at my LGS, I often wonder if any of he models I'm playing against are older than me.
So I started to so some guardsmen in a color scheme. I wanted to do something with bright and proud colors instead of the dark earthen colors that I've been doing for a while now with my guardsmen. Made half a squad to see how much I liked it and I think it came out pretty good, to my standards anyway.
My big question is how to paint a Leman Russ with these colors. I've been doing the Cadian 8th colors and pretty much been painting my guys like they are on the cover of the box until now. I think a Leman Russ would look terrible if it was all blue or black and the camouflage stripes don't make any sense with bright line infantry colors.

Herald of Nurgle, went for speed - took a little less than 2 hours with the help of a hairdryer. Just trying to get this army on the table.
>>46489983
Where do you suggest I buy inks or metallic pigments? I live in Hong Kong so I'm a bit starved for choice. My flgs has Vallejo model air and citadel paints, but if I only need a few then I'll buy the paints from overseas. What websites are good?
Also, are ink washes different from normal citadel washes?
>>46490125
They remind me of Mordians.
>>46489912
While useful for their general heights, that doesn't so much help with comparing the size of their breastplates.
For context: I plan on making a custom chestpiece for the valkir, but I don't currently have their kit in hand.
>>46490322
Thanks. I was thinking of doing something loosely based on Prussian line infantrymen but they had white pants and white is a bitch to paint so I just went with full blue uniform.
>>46490228
Thanks for the advice.
I ordered a couple forge world knights (atrapos and magaera for reference) and I'm looking for ideas on the basing. I've done one knight before and posted it on /tg/ for critique, especially on the basing. I'm looking to get better at it as it's one of the spaces I can get really creative with.
tldr good imperial knight basing ideas?
>>46489916
for a clear shine you could use a gloss. Get a metalic blue and a metallic green and then gloss it up for the extra shine. Does occasionally have the side effect of looking wet/slimy kind of shiny though.

Looks good though anon
>>46490067
I'm just shy of 21 and I know for a fact a lot of my guardsmen are older than I.
>>46489912
>But if you have no interest in painting as a hobby it's a moot point to try and get into it. If you just need singles I'd recommend looking into commission painting. I.e. you paint a guy to paint your figure for you.
I asked at my LGS if they knew of anyone and had a single guy they couldn't vouch for.
Any of you guys near MSU?
>>46490292
>Hong Kong
Oh wow, okay. That's pretty far from where I am.
But any ink - actual ink for writing - should work. You can thin them too of course. I believe the old GW paints were windsor and newton ink rebranded.
You should be able to get Tamiya clear just about anywhere though.
The other stuff I mentioned are products by Liquitex. Pic related are two of their interference mediums mixed together.
>>46490375
>I plan on making a custom chestpiece for the valkir, but I don't currently have their kit in hand.
Wouldn't it be better to buy the kit and then use a breastplate as basis for your master then? That's just about the only way to get a 100% accurate fit anyway.
>>46490550
>inb4 church
I personally like really elaborate, diorama-style bases on Knights. What about a knight striding through a shallow-water ruin? Or a knight in a subterranean cavern? My dream list of 6 knights will include one of each
>>46491072
Ooh that's exactly what I want. Thanks for your help!!
>>46491108
The water ruin sounds interesting. I don't think I could do a cavern though, not quite at that skill level.
Previous knight I did was straddling a rusted out pipe that was leaking radioactive goop
>>46491089
It's ordered, but won't be in my hands for at least a month.
>>46490550
>>46491108
I'd do something like this (minus the pigment so you can actually see what's going on, maybe some blue paint/ink/wash instead would work.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjKx08dpkzo
Now that you said ruin and church I had to think of a piece of scenery by puppetswar though. They got this thing here to the left for pretty cheap.
Should last you for 6 big bases. If you sculpt some stalagmites into the water pools that should give you the look you're going for.
>>46489595
are those the ones people are using to make sisters of battle? Pretty large copared to marines no? Amazons of battle?
>>46491294
Thanks for the video man, water effects have always seemed out of my league so I always love to learn about them
>>46491332
>water effects have always seemed out of my league
The stuff he uses is Vallejo still water. You just squeeze it out of the bottle and you are done.
As long as you are not trying to fill a whole lake with it you should be good. From what I read it tends to shrink a little if used in larger quantities. If you use it to add a little polishing to your bases you have nothing to worry about.
Posting my Malifaux Mansion again. I'm kinda stuck at this point as I don't have enough of the tile matting to floor the 3rd floor with. I need to go check Riteaid to see if they even still carry it.
>>46491416
I'll have to look into that stuff. Most of the tutorials I've seen involve painting your coloring in, with all the swirls and such and then glazing it for a shine. but something that comes out of a bottle seems way easier
>>46490269
Great effects on the guts real slimy like
>>46491469
So cool. I would kill to play on terrain this good. It's in the early stages still, but the ambition and the craftsmanship that went into it already are obvious; it's really going to be something special when you finish it, anon.

>>46492838
>>46492764
To build a drop pod without any issues without attaching the fins close all of the doors on the engine, they have the little nubs and will hold in place. Do one fin at a time, either sliding in the fin or opening a single door and putting in the adjacent fin, then closing the door when setting.
I did this process on my very first drop pod and it closes correctly as well as the doors pop into place on the engine so they won't just fall open.
>>46490269
bit much verdigris, and the blue around the guts doesn't quite work
>>46492916
I bought it and put it aside and forgot about it.
It's nice because I had a mishap that ruined a lot of models so that's some models I don't need to replace.
>>46492934

They look so annoying.
>>46492982
they are the worst models ive ever assembled bar the Ghostkeels
>>46492982
It wasn't too bad with that method since the interior was all painted before the fins went on, and like >>46492884
said, use an airbrush and it will go much faster.
>>46493001
I'm almost considering shelling out the stupid amount of money to commission them.
>>46493015

This is foam from a cooler, any suggestions on whether or not to coat this with something before priming?

>>46494118

>>46493734
I don't know about that kind of foam, but when I work with pink foam I always coat it in a thin layer of PVA glue before spraying/priming it, due to the fact that the foam melts from the spray
Two questions:
1. Painting with washes mostly/only. How do?
2. Where could I get ODST-like heads for 28mm scale (to plop onto Cadian models)?
Blood axes is da best orkz.
How do you get the panel texture effect like in pic related? I know the blue is all one solid color, but it feels like it has more depth than just multiple layers, or a I just fooling myself?
>>46495138
The light blue looks like it's slightly darker in the center, blended with a lighter color at the edge. It's most visible on the panel at the far right of the image. The rest are blended almost from a black to a lighter color.
I hope today is the day the paints I ordered arrive to my doorstep
he's my 3rd model i've ever painted and he's a roadmap of fuckups T_T
>>46495164
Thanks anon; so I'm guessing a proper way to do this would be a basecoat of black, and maybe 4-5 layers from the base blue to a lighter blue on the main panels, and then from light blue to white on the edge of the lighter panels?
>>46490125
What with all their equipment being black, it's suggestive to me of a kind of police unit. Why not consider going down that road? Like a swat unit sort of a feel, something like pic related, with things like white hazard stripes, chequering, or stripes. Bonus points for writing things like 'RESCUE VEHICLE', 'SERVE AND PROTECT', or 'PARKING ENFORCEMENT' on the sides in huge letters.
>>46495225
Not bad for your third figure, but yeah, there's a lot of room for improvement.
I'd suggest working on keeping the edge highlights neater, and maybe use a light grey for them rather than that white.
Also, you might try painting the eyes with a gem effect. It's really easy to do and it looks great. Pic related.
>>46495118

Photos are good, cropped and collaged versions would be better and make the thread easier to follow.
Your reds and yellows are clean, but look quite flat, edging them with a highlight or metal could help with that, and picking out the rivets in your light metallic would add a lot of interest.
Feather and skin look good. Can see what you're going for with the effect on the sword, but it looks too uniform. Might be better with the scratches focussed on the belly of the blade, especially around the notches, and more layers of wash close to the handle where it sees less wear.
I saw a picture guide for making white armor work, is there such a thing fro black armor? Trying to make black terminators

For black armour, you highlight with dark greys.

You need to tidy up that gloss varnish on the lenses, because right now it looks like he's crying.

Gloss in the recesses = bad

So I realise a lot of you has expiriance with forgeworld plastic/resin.
Whats it like? is it hard to work with?

Is it brittle?
I am really curious.

Thanks- I was actually trying to use Bloodletter over the white for the glowing effect.
Won't be doing any more on this guy, but I'll bear it in mind next time I'm doing a big-effort helmeted dude.
'Ardcoat's relatively thick out of the pot, isn't it? Might pick some up for that.
>>46499719
Resin is hard when fairly thick, but quite brittle if thin. It will flex a little (hence sometime needing to bend it strait with some warm water if it warped). You'll need a small jewelers saw to get the channel blocks of the larger pieces. Beyond that, cleaning mold lines is much like plastic, except the dust isn't particularly good for you.
As for the quality of the casts, that varies. They've improved their quality control a fair bit since I last ordered stuff (I have new HH stuff, before that it was like 5-6 years ago), so there's less mold-slipping or mold-lines in general. But the age of a mold makes a big difference.
>>46499719
>Is it hard to work with?
>Does it have a lot of mold lines?
>Is it brittle?
Yes to all. It's generally a bit of a pain compared to plastic, but if you're patient and careful, it'll be fine.

Hi. I want to paint my ghouls like GW's and I'm trying to figure out the steps. What I have so far:
1. Base coat Celestra Grey
2. Carroburg Crimson wash on legs, hands and other bits
3. Flayed One Flesh? layer
4. White highlights
5. Eshin Fur on hair, highlight Celestra Grey
6. Bones...
Is Flayed One Flesh right? Is it more yellow/flesh than the pale skin of these ghouls?

I need help picking a paint scheme. These are just a test so they got a nasty drybrush, no washes, and no details.
They're both getting a dettol bath but picture:
- Left: much darker brown boots, gold tyranid emblem, much darker gun, dark blue wash on all purple. metal dulled down. flesh will be normal human skin with a light purple wash.
- Right: light black wash on everything but the skin. Skins staying pale like corpse, Built up grey fine-lining rather than drybrush.
Also finally: what colour for claws, and for the lamp?
>>46501167
French horn, bud
>>46501208
Sorry about that, here is the picture on the right side
>>46501217
Right looks better but I would consider making the loincloths and robes a different colour just for differentiation. Claws are usually black or bone, black would probably look better here. Lamps can really be anything, maybe a green or a yellow.
>>46501125
but really, a razor saw, jewellers saw, retractable exacto blade with lots of replacement blades (a dull blade is very dangerous), a set of different shaped hobby files, and the finest grit sand paper (black, 800 iirc), and finally green stuff.

i'm willing to bet you'd get better results just doing Rakarth flesh as a base.
1. rakarth flesh
2. flayed one flesh.
3. red wash. maybe some watered down purple wash as well if you wanna go crazy.
4. really really watered down brown wash
5. I don't use GW greys so I can't help with fur
6. bones - ushabti bone, brown wash, ushabti bone highlight
>>46501809
sorry what i mean is use a really really watered down brown wash on the whole model. then do your final white highlight.

Huh, no they don't. What does that even do, other than weaken grav attacks? There's no instances in which invul would be ignored and armor wouldn't, is there?
I still think it would look cooler in power armor since Kroot are larger than normal humans.
>>46502402

What the fuck is this shit, it's bad even for drybrush paint! How do I redeem this damnable paint?
Does chrome NMM actually look good in person? I was thinking about trying my hand at it but I don't want to bother if it's something that looks like ass except from a specific angle.
Not as over the top as pic related, of course.

Hmm, I see what you mean. 2 and 4 don't look nearly as good as 1 and 3. Is it purely a technique for display pieces then?
And how about less reflective stuff like this? Is the difference between the apparent light source and the actual light source significantly less apparent or is it still strange from most angles? I guess it's pretty telling that I can only find NMM pictures from one angle usually, but I still wish people would post multiple angles just to give a better feel for what they've actually accomplished.
>>46502700
I've done some experimenting lately with tubs of "Blood for the Blood God" as an alternative for Red Ink, and putting it on top of red paint. It works pretty well for making a sort of shiny wash.
I'll post pictures later of my experimenting.

>I think the flak is just there for fluff reasons.
When Crusaders were first introduced as part of Inquisitorial Retinues in Third Edition, they were equipped with the same medium armour (4+) as other "Warrior" henchmen, but the large shields they bore were suppression shields, not storm shields. This made them invulnerable (4+) and also made them count as having an additional hand weapon (+1 Attack). Citadel sculpted the Crusader model with a power swords and large shield; while their description at the time said they were armed with power *swords*, it really didn't matter: in Third Edition, all power weapons (sword/axe/spear/plunger) bore an identical profile.
Im going to start painting my recently acquired Grey Knights this weekend and was wondering if my backstory / reasoning for an alternative color scheme holds water. I'd be painting them with the usual scheme but with white/blue instead of red.
The backstory would be that my guys were alerted to a chaos scheme on a frozen fringe world that houses mostly ecclesiarchy stuff. Apparently the Sisters of Battle there are guarding a recently found artifact and chaos wants to fuck shit up as usual. As the brotherhood enters the world's atmosphere a terrible warpstorm of plot levels envelopes the sector and ends up crashing them on the planet.
Now stranded on a frozen planet with a very minimal military presence and unable to communicate with the rest of the Imperium they have been fighting a hidden war with demons and the like for almost ten years. Having understood that they might have to spend time on the planet for longer than expected the brotherhood grand master has ordered the brotherhood to wear a different color in order to masquerade as a regular space marine chapter, in order to ensure that no word of the Grey Knights would leak through the local population in case the warpstorm suddenly subsided.
The whole thing would be a nice setup if I end up expanding my army to have some Sisters of Battle at some point. I could try and use this whole stuck together for 10 years thing to push them having a similar color scheme all around. I know a backstory like this might seem a bit too much but I really want a lore-friendly explanation to alternative colors and possibly the non-GK units.
>>46501791
>>46501809
Thanks, guys. I thought I found some Rakarth Flesh when I was looking at the colors in MS Paint. Maybe it is in there.

Thanks. It looks like I'm on the right path.
>>46502895
>I'd be painting them with the usual scheme but with white/blue instead of red.
Just paint them like that. If you do it well, people will go 'Cool colour scheme'. You literally just have to say 'I felt like doing something different from the studio scheme', people understand making your army your own.
You don't need the fluff, and
>how do you explain them fighting anyone but Chaos if they're supposed to be stranded?
>Stranded away from the imperium and they prioritise changing their colour scheme
>If they aren't imitating an existing chapter and still have =I= all over their gear, and still have loads of force weapons and psychic hoods, who the fuck are they fooling?
Also this probably belonged in /40kg/
>>46502856
same ive tried mixing my own red ink using the new washes (which are crap on a crap cracker) and also combining different red ink with the washes but in all my years of painting ( both miniature and canvas ) ive never come across any ink that worked, smeared, dried, or mixed so beautifully with the acrylic based citadel paints which gamesworkshop should have never ditched.
and ive looked online but just seems there is no more red ink 61-64 which does make me genuinely shed tears sometimes.
How do i stick stuff together without magnets, glue etc? Like so I can remove it later?

Is this a base or a diorama?
If it's a base:
>It might cause trouble for gaming
If it's a diorama
>Figure has had a lot of effort put into it, scenery looks like a mishmash of bits
Either way, it doesn't do the mini justice.
For a gaming base, you could go clean and use your mesh to cover the base so it looks like he's standing on a deck, possibly with a gap and a beam to break it up a little. Simple, but effective.
For a diorama, assuming this is what you want: The meshing is fine, but the wall lacks detail and is just a big black void providing no contrast to the miniature and no visual interest.
Consider using a panel from a scenery piece with plenty of details that you can pick out.
I'd also avoid the wall being black, with so much black on the mini. Brassy colours can work for imperial scenery very well.
The railings don't look great either: it looks like some dowels glued together, again there's no interest or detailing. You presumably want it quite open to show the base of the mini, so a fence with cocktail stick bars could provide that, and reduce the weirdness of the railings.
I'd also add some support struts below the decking: Imperial architecture is big on flying buttresses and gothic arches, even in practical places, so they would be a good tie-in to the aesthetic.
Nice enough mini, but the base is definitely letting it down.
>>46503429
Calm down man, he does have a point. Not practical enough to be used in a game, not good-looking enough to be a diorama. Either scale it back or give it context with surrounding scenery.
>>46503347

How come you paint figures after assembly? To me it would seem much easier to paint invidual parts first, then assemble.
I don't know much about painting, just curious.
>>46503832
Calm yourself child
>>46504601
The fit on kits is never perfect. During assembly you have to glue and fill gaps, which will oftentimes be rendered difficult or impossible by prepainting. People often partially assemble their models, for ease of painting, but it's pretty rare to see someone paint parts individually, just because it's a huge pain in the dick.
>>46504601
>How come you paint figures after assembly?
Because:
you didn't think through your subassemblies
you were bored and just wanted to do something so you assembled them
you don't know better
they're only going to be tabletop standard so you don't really care and you save time and effort
there's going to be a gap to fill and there's no point painting when you'll have to apply putty and sand it down later.
>To me it would seem much easier to paint invidual parts first, then assemble.
Sure is, to a certain extent. There is usually a certain amount of assembly that it makes sense to do, as it doesn't limit brush access, and often that means you put several of these subassemblies together, prime and paint, and then glue together in the end.
>>46492916

As an Ogre Kingdoms player, I always paint before assembly, primarily because some of the parts are IMPOSSIBLE to plaint after assembly. Specifically under the arms. Most of mine are noticably grey in the gap between their arms and thighs, because it's impossible to get a paint-brush in there, without brushing their trousers as well. The easiest way to fix this is to paint before assembly.

Looks boss, but why would you want a power axe *and* a power fist? They are both Unwieldy, and the power fist is a Specialist weapon, so you don't gain +1 Attack for having an additional close combat weapon.
>>46505199
Ax looks great, but I'm undecided about the head. It sort of pushes it into too much Sigmar territory. What would the color scheme look like? That could save it.

Gluing painted surfaces together is weak
You can't gap fill after painting
Handling the parts to paint is difficult
If you can't get brush access to an area you probably can't see it well either.
>>46504601
Because you cant tell exactly where light and shadows are supposed to be until the model is assembled. There are some cases where leaving a piece off of the model is the best way, but doing this as standard practice is amateur hour, and will prevent you from developing your skills. My apologies if I hurt the feelings of any sub-assembly painters, we all have our preferred methods. But yours is wrong.

Are those just based blue and the light is naturally highlighting it, or is it airbrushed? Looking really good
>>46505984
They look a little easter-y for my tastes. I think a light wash would do them some good.

Airbrushed saves some time if all the blues are done.

Tone of them should change a lot after the blue is glazed down a bit, don't want to go with a wash. 2 dark and they wont stand out on the table.

I picked up a couple of those for my Witchhunters warband, and they are tiny! They come as accessories on the sprue with the Bretonnian bowmen.

Verily, your men will dominate the fields upon which they do battle with such ferocious weapons of war.
Also, a moment of silence for the Bretonnians. Gone, but not forgotten.

Any option for them not to have identical heads?

What are those from? And what scale are they?
