Here's hoping Velen gets off his wrinkly blue ass and actually does something.
But I'm not going to hold my breath.
That'd be like expecting Malfurion to do something useful.
>>
>Blizzard will never have the balls to let Arthas win the Scourge War and turn all of Azeroth into an undead army to fight the Legion
>>
>>46424424
If you read his leader short story, you realize just how much of a fag he is. He sits there on his ship all day and looks into the future. Then the OCDONUTSTEEL character anduin comes and suddenly he becomes proactive.
>>
>>46424737
The problem with Velen is the same with Malfurion. By the fluff, they're both ridiculously powerful and each could wreck the Horde single-handedly. So they have to be kept on the sidelines not doing anything, even if there's no good reason for them not to do anything.
>>
>>46424895
Too bad they awoke Malfurion

Him being within the Emerald dream was a perfect excuse for keeping him out of the way so that he couldn't just solve all the problems you need PCs to solve.
>>
>>46424895

The bomb exploded so hard that it destroys theramore in all timelines.
yes blizzard is that stupid
>>
>>46425149
Wow

What about Theramore made the writers so butthurt that they needed to destroy it entirely like that?

Bad enough that the bombing of Theramore was pretty much the worst bit of writing of that whole expansion, but they had to make it so that it happened to every Theramore in every universe? That has to be due to some kind of weird grudge
>>
>>46425149
But what about timelines like the one created by WoD, where there IS no Theramore?
Does a magical mana bomb just explode over an empty segment of swampy island?

>>
>>46425293

I don't know. Remember that by this time the old team was all but gone. Only metzen was there.

But yes, the destruction of theramore was a big fuck you to the alliance, and it would be alright if the horde got some comeuppance ingame for it. but none of that happened.
>>
>>46425383
Does the Horde even have fans anymore?

I used to be a fan of the Horde, but everything I like about them has been consistently either removed, or shoved under the rug, and by this point I'm just sick of it.

I want my ragtag bunch of underdogs back. Not a well-oiled fighting machine
>>
>>46425452
Too many little tweenage babbies playing who want their horde to be SUPAH BADASS and EDGY and shit.
They all whine like fuck whenever anyone suggest that Jaina has good reason to be upset and cry that she should be killed just because.
>>
>>46425601
Jaina has an excellent reason to be upset

My problem is that the reason she has, shouldn't exist, because that whole plotline was fucking retarded.

It's not enough that Blizzard fucks things up, they keep fucking things up in ways that can not ever be reversed, leaving us to deal with them permanently rather than being able to fix the writers stupid mistakes without a massive retcon
>>
>>46425452

No, there was a quest chain in tanaris where a troll want you to collect some regeant for him.
They include some wind serpant soul from Feralas and blood of Hakkar from sunken temple.
Then he reveal himself being jin'do , then flew off to zul'gurub then the quest chain ends.

Then zul'gurub opens and you go kill him.

They're really quite fascinating.

>>46427338
I've already read through practically every bit of lore they've got. From what I can see, the only relation between the two races is that they both focus on gold as a source of power within their societies.

Other than that, ethereals are far more technologically advanced, better at magic, and actually have a refined nature to them, as opposed to goblins and their crude nature.

both of them are consistently protrayed as "capitalists with better than average technology" with goblins it's played for laughs while ethereals are meant to be mysterious and fairly serious (for WoW)

>>46427426
Refined doesn't necessarily mean trustworthy. The easiest analogy I can make to compare goblins and ethereals is this:

Goblins are like a used cars salesman who is trying to sell you a car that barely works, but insists that it does.

Ethereals are like a suit and tie businessman who is trying to get you to sign a contract for the same car, but uses words you don't know to play you into signing the contract without even reading it.

>>46427446
I mean, sure they're both capitalists, but again, they're not the same. Goblins have better tech than most everyone, true. But ethereals have better tech than most goblins.

Examples of ethereal tech include:
>gigantic eco-domes that "allow for work in a controlled and life-sustaining atmosphere"
>physical holograms that can be directly interacted with and vice versa
>teleporters
>"proto-accelerators" (the exact nature of what this thing is isn't really clarified, other than "to strike at their proto-accelerator would be futile as it is an ethereal creation", likely hinting that ethereal technology is especially sturdy, and the fact that it turns ethereals into void infused nexus-stalkers)
>transponders (communicators)
>phase disruptors (used to "annihilate" the void conduit powering Dimensius)
>devices capable of gathering souls

There's a few more, but these are some of the more important ones.

>Arthas
How is that going to work? Wasn't his soul separated from the Lich King's during the end of the Icecrown raid?
>>
>>46429221
Hell it was always seperated.

The body was controlled by Soulless Arthas who had subjugated and absorbed Ner'zhul, his soul itself was inside Frostmourne, and that "Conscience" bit that connected his Soulless mind to his soul itself was in his heart or some shit.
>>
>>46429221
No idea. Possibly Bolvar gets wrecked somehow and KT does some magic mumbo jumbo to bring him back with the helm of the damned.

I'm sure that someone could come up with a way. It's not like it needs to make a hell of a lot of sense.
>>
>>46428778
You know who i'd like to see against the Legion, everyone else other than the Alliance or Horde.

Steamwheedle Cartel, Shatar, Aldor, Scryers, Pandaria factions, everybody.

For example, for Shado-pan help to help heal their trees, mantids bring in troops to kill the Legion, The fact that this leaves them less mouths to feed helps. They also bring in a Klaxxi in amber to to lead the mantid but he got captured. So we get a quest or daily to rescue him.

This is what I mean. Use the factions from previous expansions. The Burning Legion is a problem for everyone not just Horde, Alliance and new factions. Not just a cameo. But that probably won't happen.

There's a few of them in the new Artifact quests. Anyhow, I expect we'll see more Ethereals if we ever get a Void-themed expansion down the line. Whether in the form of Ethereals trying to become Void or to fight it. I suppose that's one thing to look forward to, as they're undoubtedly one of the cooler races in terms of both attitude and appearance.

Speaking about Void themes, which the Old Gods are now part of, how extensive do people think Azeroth's underground may be? Would it be large enough to house its own ecosystem of Aqir, Faceless Ones, and other weird shit?
>>
>>46429920
I really like the idea of the Old Gods and their servants fighting the Legion because Azeroth is their's to torment and they'll be damned if they let some two bit space monkeys muscle in on their turf

Well, there's also the part where Sargeras and his Legion are directly opposed to their goals and trying to kill them. It's in the Old Gods' best interests to defeat the Burning Legion once and for all, as it would eliminate the most active force preventing them, including those on other worlds, from finally achieving their masters' goals.

I'm hoping that Shadow Priests and their artifact Xal'atath will be able to arrange a mutually beneficial alliance, allowing us to recruit some Faceless and Aqir followers. I'd love to see an army of those bastards helping us put an end to the Legion once and for all, so that their own conquest of the cosmos will be cleared of its greatest obstacle.
>>
>>46429221
Arthas's soul is seen to still be in the land of shadow.
So if somehow his soul is brought back he will be up and kicking again in no time.
>>
>>46430235
>Arthas's soul is seen to still be in the land of shadow.
I don't think he's in the Shadowlands. He's in a dark place described as an "infinite void" full of indescribable creatures who couldn't possibly exist in the world of the living.

I'll bet you anything that he's in the Void.
>>
>>46430235
His soul wasn't in control of his body from the moment he picked up Frostmourne, just a twisted (And delightfully sardonic) echo of his personality.

But yes even his soul is in a nastier "Hell" section of the Shadowlands, some sort of Void-hell, or that whole thing with Sylvanus seeing him pay the price for his sins leading up to Frostmourne was an illusion by the Val'kyr to weaken her for mind control.
>>
>>46430265
why would his soul go into the void?
>>
>>46430265
>>46430273
Apparently it's the equivalent of hell/ "Actually designed to burn off your sins for eventual entry to heaven" Purgatory which he more than rightly earned at the very LEAST in Northrend. (I am not starting a shitshow about the Straholme incident, he's in hell for betraying his men and his mercenaries.)
>>
>>46430333
yes and why would he indefinitely be there?
I mean green dindu killed far more men than him, the orcs do that all the time and yet he gets stuck in purgatory.
>>
>>46430273
The same way that some go into the Light. Why can't the Void claim souls too? We've seen it do that in WoD, and Arthas surrounded himself in a ton of Saronite which could have eased in the process.

The Shadowlands are heavily implied to not be the final afterlife. There are places after it, and ultimately the two main powers are the Light and Void which exist throughout everything. It could just be that his soul had darkened to the point where the Void had the strongest pull on it.
>>46430333
I think it's just the Void that he went to, not any sort of purgatory. The "infinite void" wasn't described as burning off his sins or anything. It was a plane of infinite evil inhabited by indescribable entities, of such scale that they made the power and evil of the Lich King look insignificant, and got a sadistic joy from tormenting the souls in their grasp.

The Shadowlands are more like the ghost realm rather than a proper afterlife, for spirits who haven't quite passed on yet. We've seen the Shadowlands every time we've died and in various quests. It's rather bleak, but it's not an awful realm of infinite torment.
>>
>>46430350
>yes and why would he indefinitely be there?
>I mean green dindu killed far more men than him, the orcs do that all the time and yet he gets stuck in purgatory.
Arthas was just the one who was most relevant to Sylvanus.
>>
>>46430350
Who knows how many orcish souls the void may have claimed? In WoD, the Void creatures seem to be claiming plenty of Orcs just fine.
>>46430419

I really dislike the plot point of "There must always be a lich king", implying that Arthas was actually holding the scourge back, especially considering that scene where his heart got destroyed.
And I don't like suggestion that feral scourge is somehow more of a threat than organized weaponized scourge, that it would somehow be capable to overrun the crusade armies when army commanded by Lich King could not do so.

Adding Bolvar in there felt redundant. Arthas could have died, scourge could have stayed like the Zerg. If they wanted to recycle it in future expansions, they could just have a necromancer or a rogue DK take it over.
>>
>>46431987

You laugh, but one day he'll actually do the fusion dance with ner'zhul and arthas and become the lich emperor.

Its implied that scourge had a "massive" army hidden , the ones that you fought is just token force by comparison.
Its not feral scourge is more dangerous than organized scourge, but there will be like thousand times of them.

Bolvar was popular enough to be given a role in latter game, that was the point.
He was to the alliance what thrall was to horde.

Why did neither Ner'zhul nor Arthas make use of those meatshields?

Or is it some sort of quirk of necromantic magic that element of a sapient, controlling mind actively suppresses activity of the undead, perhaps to facilitate ease and security of control?

I mean it's still an asspull but...

Because their ultimate foe was the burning legion.
Even if Ner'zhul had it, he never would ultilized that army. His problem was him losing control of the scourge when facing illidan.
I can't see how unleashing a force he can't control being a good plan.

Arthas was obviously trolling the entire WoTLK.
He was baiting the strongest heroes of the world (aka player Murderhobos) to come to ICC so he can convert them into his strongest champions.

Replaying WC3 and TFT recently made me realize something: Tyrande and Malfurion are actually pretty dumb and selfish.
Up until his death it's Cenarius who commands and wins their battles.
After that all she does is win a single battle that she herself needlessly provokes and then race the Undead to Malfurions burrow.
In there she goes against Malfurions orders, breaks into a prison, goes on a murderous rampage and kills the wardens for doing their job. A job they've been doing for the last 10 000 years. 10 000 years underground, while she was running around in the woods fucking trees. A job they've been doing on MALFURION'S DIRECT ORDERS.
And the whole thing on the idea that Illidan MIGHT help them.
Then she refuses to accept her fuckup and get's all bitchy about it to Maiev, who is rightfully pissed.
And then in TFT she goes against Malfurion AGAIN when the scene is literally
>Malfurion: Stop bickering and concentrate on Illidan. This has the highest priority.
>Maiev: Okay
>Tyrande: Guess what, we are doing something different now.
And then she bombs the bridge she is standing on. There's no indicator they even needed the Belves' help.

Malfurion isn't any better. If Cenarius knew what he has been up to, he'd slap his shit. Not only does he let Illidan go in Reign of Chaos for NO FUCKING REASON, he let's him go AGAIN in TFT just because he helped saving his Waifu. Even though Illidan just nearly fucked up the world for the fourth or fifth time. Because after Illidan declared that he never wanted to rule the world, just ALL THE MAGIC and ALL THE POWER, that won't ever come back and bite them in the ass.

Maiev's only "mistake" was to lie to Malfurion, and she had to lie because she fucking knew he'd drop everything just to go save his waifu.
>>

Biggest issue I have with the whole thing is having three human members. Might've been cool to have a little more diversity, but I still love that Nazgrim is in at least. And the fact that we get some continuation to Thassarian and Koltrias storylines. Overall, DK class story seems to be the best of Legion.
>>
Okay, I have a lore-bending challenge. I took the current playable races, and randomly separated them into two.

I got:
Faction A: Draenei, Dwarf, Goblin, Troll, Undead, Worgen

Faction B: Blood Elf, Gnome, Human, Orc, Night Elf, Tauren

Okay, by keeping the events up to the end of WC2 the same, find a way to make the races end up in these factions. You can slightly bend the events, and races don't have to be the same tribes/nations etc.
>>
>>46432687
But what was wrong with his Illidan-Thing? Absorbing the Skull of Gul'dan? All he have done was jump to fight the Buring Legion from the start.
>>
>>46432734
I really, really wish that muh race and muh diversity was never ever used as justification for makeup of any group, especially not in fantasy games. Maybe unless it was literally part of political landscape of that setting. In this case ebon blade leadership would have to draw up list of candidates and pick or discard names based on their race, gender and allegiance.
>Okay, members formerly from scarlet crusade threaten riots if we don't include one of their candidates.
>I see female members also complain about inadequate representation and threaten to bury their sex organs if situation is not addressed. Maybe we should combine the two and raise Sally?
>Okay. Now, what's next? Our horde members were complaining for a long time about lack of representation. Especially now after Sylvanas treachery they are not buying that technically we're all forsaken so basically represent faction of a horde. Fortunately we know of an orc candidate...
>Next up are the goody two shoes grumbling about lack of moral backbone. As luck would have it, I have it on good authority that one spectacular candidate is ripe for reanimation, as long as they are not too squeamish about how we get the corpse... heh heh
>>
>>46432306
WC2 was the last time Warcraft had good writing, and it's precisely because it and the original WC had their stories primarily told through infodumps between missions and painting characters and nations alike with very brief, broad strokes.

Once Blizz started doing actual character dialog and a moment-to-moment unfolding story the Warcraftverse immediately began going more and more full retard, with fewer and fewer blips of good ideas scattered throughout.
>>
>>46432924
It's a minor gripe, mostly just because the Death Knights themselves are a really varied bunch with members from almost all races. Figured there's at least be a High Elf or something in there too.
>>
>>46432872
Well, he transformed himself into a half-demon. I can see why the Night Elves would get their panties in a twist over that. But Illidan was doing the probably wrong thing for the right reason.
The actual problem here is asking Illidan for help and then getting upset when he helps you his own way.
>>
>>46432864
Make trolls into forest trolls. They're working with the Forsaken to drive away the remains of the Scourge, also killing those pesky elves.
Don't invade Gilneas.
Draenei can be there to help Undead fight with the Lich King control or cure the curse of Worgen or the undeath or whatever.
Goblins are there for money. Sacking artifacts from the ruins of Dalaran and stuff and doing dangerous experiments with them. Whatever.
No idea about the Dwarves.

Faction B could just be the alliance that was formed in WC3, to fight the Burning Legion. Add Blood Elves to rekindle their connection with Night Elves, or make them High Elves.

Actually you can make Theramore the base of Humans. Let Stormwind be it's own thing.
Do something with Dwarves. Stormwind leaving the Alliance or something with Dark Iron.... Make them to join Faction A to survive.
>>
>>46432948
RPG book actually had a lot of good ideas.
Just its not canon now.

How Malfurion fights in RPG book:
In combat Malfurion calls on nature to aid him in battle. He relies on summoned creatures, treants, dryads, night elf warriors and other allies.
He supports them with spells and acts as their general. If Malfurion is encountered alone, he usually uses his spells and abilities to escape into the forests and return later with help

So yeah, he basically just get a bunch of people to attack--> run away --> come back with more people to attack.
He fights exactly like a street thug.

They took the ones, they had the ability to raise. Now they will be stronger than ever, the secret weapon they wield out of sight, for Azeroth's peace.

My favorite bit of lore that I discovered in game and with a few books was the dragon skeleton in Dragonblight thatArthas aka lich King was digging up

The skeleton belonged to Galakrond. The most powerful dragon ever. Who nearly wiped out the whole world even with resistance from all of the dragon aspects, plus pre evil deathwing

I just liked the subtle "if Arthas raises this then there will be no stopping him. And the scourge wins".
Also. Since they brought back illidan, and Blizzard is a bunch of assholes what are the odds that we fight another lich King, because ner'zul is back alive, and I feel like blizzard is just waiting for the chance to bring it back.

Also, because of the portal bullshit, is there a chance turalyon and his wife, sylvannas's sister is still alive? The portal was shut on them, but this portal opened before the world ended... And it's plausible that Arthas' sister was with them, after fleeing the orcs and possibly met up with them and entered the portal with them in the first place.

Finally.

Khadgar. Let's discuss him. He is powerful, and has medivhs notes, knowledge to some extent. He also wields a legendary staff who's power lore wise is constantly rising making khadgar more powerful.

Now assuming khadgar isnt an idiot would it be logical to assume that he could mess with the portals? Maybe even open them, or close them, or even change where it opens to? Because assuming he can, and because he was working in secret many times, he could have been responsible for turalyon and his wife getting stranded. Or could have set the portal on their end to not return them to azeroth.explaining why they never returned.

Its been years since I explained this. But I remember all of it being possible, and that was my theory, that khadgar is working for himself, and is possibly evil/stacking his deck. Having a living royal family of lordaeron member who can retake lordaeron. Keeping sylvanas's sister who could talk sense to sylvanas. Etc. Etc.

There were plans for an entire underground zone that would have been the Nerubian Empire if I'm not mistaken. It never made it to retail, but if I had to hazard a guess for how expansive the underground of Azeroth is, I would say something rather massive, though there aren't many entrances into it.

The Dark Iron kingdom, Molten Core, and the Nerubian kingdom are the only real "massive" places beneath Azeroth's crust.

Also given that the Void is the new "big bad" I assume the ending of Legion will be us killing Sargeras and then in his dying breath revealing that the Void is the real evil, setting up for a Void expansion. Fingers crossed for ethereals then.

Not playing at all. But I'm thinking about hitting a private RP server or, if none of them look any good, even hit up retail for a month or so. A few bucks for a week or two fun seems fair enough to me.

>The Dark Iron kingdom, Molten Core, and the Nerubian kingdom are the only real "massive" places beneath Azeroth's crust.
As far as we know. Those giant Old God maw things had to have come from somewhere, and there's apparently a ton of Faceless Ones below the layer the Nerubians live on. If they wanted to make an underground expansion they could probably do it, and even give it plenty of different environments depending on what fiction they borrow their ideas from.

They could even shove Dark Trolls down there.

Though perhaps it's not as WoW Lore as much as it is in-game discussion, what do you guys think of a Goblin Casino City in the Undermine to gamble, play mini-games, and RP? Casino-only currency can be used, a good excuse to use current Goblin architecture and designs, and lots of sweet, sexy _Goblin_ Pole dancers all around.

So, if we're discussing the viability of Warcraft as an RPG setting, how would you handle the god-like entities and their relationship to mortals?

They're worshiped by the Vrykul and other titan-forged and can create their own planes or afterlives.
>>46443248
Anyhow, I didn't ask how you think Blizzard would handle them. I asked how you would handle them. Of course they're going to be loot bags in-game, whether it's as questgivers or bosses.

We've got Naaru, Wild Gods, powerful undead spirits, Titan Keepers, and Old Gods, to name a few. We also used to have Dragon Aspects, but someone got rid of them.

Anyhow, I feel the game setting sort of limits the ways in which they can be portrayed. So would you just ignore their existence, or would you find a use for them?
>>
>>46443390
Good thing they improved the formula.

>>46443431
Frankly if it's not a human, an orc, and elf or maybe a dwarf it should be relegated to comedy status and shat on mercilessly.

I'd generally not have them show up as enemies unless the players manage to recruit an equally divine ally or other special means to counter them.

THe Map in WoW is subject to constant change, but generally people didn't know what was west of Kalimdor.//East of EK, yet here the Mortal-made globe shows three islands.
>>
>>46443631
Yes, but we're Azeroth's greatest heroes in the MMO. Of course the greatest heroes of the world can challenge these godlike beings, and of course it would be made trivial in an MMO.
>>46443620
Well, that's an actual serious answer. I'm not really too interested in fighting them as I feel most gods should maintain a certain distance.

However, I'm more interested in their cultural roles and activity throughout the world. In WoW, they just sit there unmoving and wait for the player to interact with them so they can hand out a quest or start the fight. How would you actually integrate them as active parts in the setting?

I would have loved for one of the Four Horsemen to be a gnome, just to fuck with everybody.

There'd be a collective "what the fuck" echoing across the official Story forums, fansites, etc. MMOChamp's shitposting brigade would have a field day both defending and hating it, pissing at one another endlessly.

It would be a thing of beauty.
