I regret giving orks a try today and more than that going green tide and managing 100 boyz every turn.
My original plan was to have a squad of 50 conscript allies, story being they were left behind on the planet and painted themselves green and pretended to be orks to avoid being killed. Some of them still died from orks getting bored and fighting.

All that aside it was fun, friend did get more kills this time but he kept rushing the blob of 100 boyz in melee with his berzerkers.

It's still not clear, but I feel the most accurate reading is TWC are S10. Why? Because the Thunderwolf mount which normally gives +1S and makes Thunder Hammers go to S9 is not an upgrade for TWC. It's part of the unit. You can't have a TWC without a Thunderwolf, nor is the Thunderwolf a +1S bonus. The TWC is S5. Period. That's why it's written in the stat profile as S5. Five times two is ten.

Unfortunately its 9. The mount wargear adds 1 and the hammer wargear doubles. You always multiply first on wargear.
ITC chooses to errata the stat bonus as a non-wargear bonus to get around this.

>>
>>46104365
is it a bonus or an increase? a bonus gets added after the double while an increase affects the base before everything.
>>
>>46104365

Does the 7E codex still have the "The Thunderwolf mount's bonus is included in the stat line" or something to that effect on it?

If they still have it, it should be S9. If they removed it it should be S10.
>>
>>46104434
It's a bonus if a wolf lord takes a thunder wolf, it's not so clear with actual thunder wolf cav.
>>
>>46104476
i mean is it called "bonus" or "increase" because bike toughness is "increase" and affects the base. while a melee weapon or other stuff is a "bonus" and is added last.

Who the fuck thinks otherwise?

Besides faglord Tau players and other MC armies who are just scared of having their very-obviously-a-fucking-walker cheese unit being turned into a shitty exploding vehicle?

>The real danger to vehicles is mass str 6-8 shooting and glances.

Not anymore. This was true in 6E to early 7E, especially with armies like Waveserpents and Tau, but now thanks to Knights and superheavies/gargantuans everywhere, melta is spammed out the ass, and melta makes both hull point stripping and penetrations a very serious threat. Even if mid strength glancing was more common, the random penetrating explosion is still a bullshit thing that is likely present in most games.

Even grav is dangerous due to immobilized double stripping. Oh yeah, and being immobilized to begin with. Hey, let's make MCs and FMCs unable to move!

Is the "bonus" vs. "increase" thing accurate? If so, it doesn't matter if the Thunderwolf is a wargear bonus because the rules say "increase" right?

I don't know so this is an actual question.
>>
>>46104092
TWC are str 10 because they have str 5 right in the profile. That much should be obvious.

Where it really gets muddy is for Wolf Lords that take mounts. But my meta is full of tournyfag tryhards that have accepted ITC as law so its str 10 for us.
>>
>>46104603
>>46104627
>>46104632
Better question, what actual difference does it make aside from not instant-deathing Toughness 5?
>>
>>46104627
well i'm going off the fact that bikes +1 toughness used to not count for the instant death doubling, but now count for it. then i went to look how they refer to the bike's extra toughness and the core rulebook calls it an "increase" compared to other things being called a "bonus". in fact it's the only mechanical thing called an increase in the core rulebook. which sets an increase apart as a rules concept.
>>
>>46104434
>>46104507
Was "Bonus" and "Increase" in the 6th edition rules? I skipped 6th, but in 7th there is only reference to "Modifiers" and "Multiple Modifiers" and there is no distinction. First two headers under Core Rules.
>>
>>46104704

It has 1 extra S for penning vehicles and those tough MCs/GCs?

Is this a question? S10 is way better than S9.
>>
>>46104619

Formations aren't FOCs. They're their own separate detachment. You can't have a unit slot into two detachments. You either put that Tactical Marine in your CAD FOC troop slot, or you put it in your formation. You can't have one Tactical Marine squad fulfill both requirements. Read your rules.
>>
>>46104158
TWM is a piece of wargear. It's in the TWC wargear list on their profile. Being wargear it must obey the order of operations for wargear with modifiers. It's S9.

>>46104632
>I don't even have the codex but I'm going to spit out bullshit regardless.

>>
>>46104782

They have to list them as wargear otherwise you get the old edition errors of Terminators not having Terminator armor.
>>
>>46104804
>I mean you've still charged a Wraithknight so it probably won't go that well for you but still.

>>
Does anyone know how the a storm raven with CH extension kit stacks up size-wise with the FW flyers?
>>
>>46104824
That doesn't make them exempt from the core rules. They're still wargear in the wargear section.
>>
>>46104619
No
They are their own FOC
>read the rules
>>
>>46104921

Actually, it would. If TWC did not have "Thunderwolf Mount" in its wargear list, this situation would be entirely different, although the unit itself would work exactly as it does now (S9 vs. S10 argument aside). It would also be S10 for sure.

I don't think any of the bonuses in the TWM wargear need to be explicitly listed on a unit that has it by default, because it can just be rolled into the unit. TWC could simply be a base Cavalry S5 T5 W2 Beast, etc.
>>
So here's a question.

Soon after starting 40k, I recieved a Knight Warden kit as a gift. Knowing it was a challenge model to paint, I kept it in the box and played without it for almost half a year, while practicing on my other models.

Recently, however, I finally thought myself up to the challenge and magnetized, then painted the knight. It took two months, but it came out BEAUTIFULLY.

And now I've actually played with it and discovered that not only is it an amazing model, it's an absolute powerhouse of a unit, as well. I have to fight the temptation not to include it in every army I play!

What's my cutoff, /40k/? When do I need to bring out my Knight?
>>
>>46105045

One Knight isn't really a big deal, and I'm saying that as an Ork player.

It's when you bust out more than 1 that people get pissed off, and rightly so. Most armies simply aren't equipped to deal with much more than 1 super-heavy.
>>
>>46105045
1000 point or higher games. Maybe leave it out against some weaker armies.
>>
>>46105045

1 knight is normal and about average for 40k these days. Basically anything that can't handle a random army + 1 knight is in the "underpowered/super casual" zone.

So if you know your opponent really likes to make fun lists and doesn't try to make good lists at all, don't take the knight. Otherwise 1 knight is always okay to take. They should have enough melta or high strength to either take care of it, and if not, it's just one knight and skillful play/list will be able to outmaneuver/last it.
>>
I still need to finish painting my Guards but I already want to get a "bad guy" (non imperium technically considering everybody's sort of bad) army, because I think nobody should be forced to have non fluffy games.

What's a fun one to go for that is fun for people to play against? I've still got a lot of time to think about this because if I went and bought another army now I would have to not eat for a while.
>>
>>46105045
Tbh people who bitch about knights don't enjoy being challenged as players. I can understand not wanting to fight them every game, but as a once in a while thing a knight list is fine. Also you could play an ITC mission if they're really salty about it since killing any superheavy according to that ruleset gives you 2 maelstrom points for free, thus kinda evening it out.

They were my first army. I lose 9 games out of 10 but by god do I love playing people with them.

Funny thing about playing bad armies, and Dark Eldar in particular, is it makes you a better player. You lose a lot, so you learn to have fun with the game anyway and not take it personally. Your army doesn't have a WAAC option so you're always playing to the objectives and trying to stay one step ahead of the opponent. The downside of course is if you just want to chuck dudes at one another you're always gonna lose :<

>>
>>46106294
Blood angels were fantastic in 5th though, even after the ultramarine codex came out and Matt Ward brought in some cool retro stuff that has never made an appearance again, such as auxiliary grenade launchers.
>>
>>46107217
No, the Rhino went completely insane and decided to grow a bayonet on its pintle mount because Daemons think that's cool.
>>
>>46107267
Considering it's pretty much impossible for that marine to actually get inside the rhino, maybe it's so if they do get overran he can pull the bolter off the mount and die heroically?
>>
>>46107225
One of the few advantages Chaos has over Loyalist is the ability to take three additional weapons at the same time - a Combi-Bolter, a Combi-Weapon, and a Havoc Launcher - and put them on our vehicles. You can, RAW, take a Defiler with two Havoc Launchers, a Rhino with a Havoc Launcher and Combi-Melta, Land Raider with a Havoc Launcher, etc.

Havoc Launchers are probably not worth their points costs if we were to mathhammer it out, but they do suddenly make Rhinos a threat at less than 24" to infantry and light vehicles alike, and people who play/are used to playing Space Marines don't expect them to be able to do that.
>>
>>46107580
The main thing it does is make Chaos Rhinos into Chaos Razorbacks. Still just as fragile, but stick that many guns on a box and a few guys inside to shoot out, and it's gonna put out a lot of dakka.
>>
>>46107580
a hilarious build for a defiler is the battle octopus. just replace as many weapons with melee weapons as you can and laugh about how many attacks you get
>>
>>46107580
>>46107615

Havoc Launchers are 48" range, not 24"

Still only a single Strength 5 blast, but it's also only 12 points.
>>
>>46107651
I looked it up and you're right. I typically get my Rhinos in as quick as possible, so most of my army is shooting within 24" or less.

They are also S5 AP5 Blast and Twin-Linked, which ain't bad at all, especially for 12pts. I take them on all my Rhinos, and they typically make sure my opponent keeps his backfield units in very heavy cover.
>>
>>46107651
>>46107737
The amount of extra utility you get with chaos rhinos is actually really nice, only issue in inflating the cost of what are very temporary tin cans really.

Overall the added benefits of taking a special weapon on the transport or even a deffrolla rip-off could really help the squad inside out.
>>
>>46107805
Yeah, taking one that suits the squad is good. Loading up a Rhino with a bunch of different ones is probably just going to result in wasted points.
>>
>>46104092
It should be 9, because Strength 10 should be rare, seen on Super-Heavies, single shot vehicle weapons, Smash attacks, and the like.
But fuck balance, I guess, because they're Strength 10 RaW and strength 9 RaW on independent characters.

Spare a single heavy support slot for a pair of Penitent Engines. They're wonderful backfield babysitters and will earn their points if someone decides to slap a drop pod on an objective in your deployment zone.
>>
>>46108550

MY BANK WOULDN'T FINANCE MY EXORCIST TANKS

PLS HELP
>>
>>46108659

That's terrible advice. Not only are Penitent Engines not that great, but they're walkers which is even worse. At least they're not as expensive as other shitty walkers, but you get what you pay for.

And you're going to pay points for these units to not even do anything? What if the opponent never goes near them? You wasted that slot and all those points on a job a single SoB could have done.

The worst part is you gave up an Exorcist slot for that garbage.
>>
>>46108804
Get good son, I pull this maneuver with my Talos all the time. 160 points to sit on an objective in the backfield and do nothing all game may seem like a waste but you're not seeing the bigger picture. Those 2 Penitent engines are throwing down 4 heavy flamer templates and boasting strength 10 attacks at initiative. Just sitting them there means your opponent *won't* drop pod behind your lines, which means you don't have to pry your advancing forces away to deal with people who've surrounded you or could threaten your Exorcists. Speaking of which, if your Penitent Engines are in your backfield, guess what enemy anti-armor will have to deal with if they try to go for them? Just because your guard dog has never bitten an intruder doesn't mean it hasn't done its job.
>>
>>46107217

>Practical argument

Marines can carry heavy bolters and in the event that the Rhino is disabled the Marine can rip the bolter off and charge into combat with it.

>Aesthetic argument

Fits with the look and theme of Chaos. Warp-infused mutant monsters don't need to tick every box of logic.

I try to buy most things legit, but living in Australia I have to pay the Australia tax (if you don't know what that is, look at the price for models in any other country, use google to convert it into aussie dollars, then look at the actual listed australia price and notice the substantial bump up over what it should be). it costs me almost $1 per in game point for an army.

Want to start a new army? Cool, I'm looking at $1,000 for a moderate sized force.

God forbid if I should want special characters with a jump pack or bike or something, which means I need to buy an entire other kit just to get a jump pack in addition to the $60 character itself.

I can get this stuff for about 1/3 of the price as recasts, so I try to buy legit as often as I can, but it's sometimes just not feasible.

Maybe if GW dropped their ridiculous Australia tax it would be easier.

>>46111197
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as a stormbolter, is in fact, a combi-bolter, or as I've taken to calling it, a twin linked bolter. Stormbolters aren't separate systems unto themselves, but rather fully functional double barrelled systems made useful by the single trigger, magazine, and vital machine spirit system components comprising a full weapon system as defined by the adeptus mechanicus.

Many heretics run a modified version of the bolter system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, that version of bolter widely used today when glued to another is often called a "stormbolter", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the combi-bolter system, developed by the emperor during the thunder warrior project. There really are just regular bolters, and these heretics are using them, but it is just a part of the system they also use.

Funny I always figured they'd just use Harsh Noise music and since it had been weaponized and genetically enhanced super warriors with amazing hearing were making it that the genre just really took off among noise marine artists. The first noise marine did just use a corrupted instrument as opposed to any specialist equipment too, and guitars are rad as fuck symbolically.

2 Morkanoughts, KFF, extra armour - 580 points

Lots of walkers, and they all can get a save fairly easily due to the size of the morkanaught base.

Large blast vs 60mm base on everything means that they will only ever hit 1 vehicle most of the time unless terrain forces me to bunch together.

Extra armour on everything so they will never stop moving and I can always account for KFF range.

Only thing to look out for are blasts bigger than 5" which I don't think will be likely in a 1500 point game.

I'm new to this hobby so I got a question.

When talking about base color, do people mean the first color after priming or the color at the "end"?

As in, you prime, base, layer 1 and maybe layer 2, highlight

Skorchas on your deff dreads, you lack anti horde.

Wouldn't go full extra armour on the kans and would prefer grot riggers for the orkanauts.

Not much else to suggest.

Nice painboy, nerd.

Kans are sadly Grotzookas or go home. Rokkits just aren't very good these days. Tankbustas work well with Rokkits because they have Melta-Bombs to back them up. Buggies work with Rokkits because they're dirt cheap, fast, and can outflank. Somewhat the same applies for Koptas (but I'm not a fan of koptas nowdays). Kans are expensive and slow.

>Extra armour on everything so they will never stop moving

Extra armour does not stop Immobilized, and when Grav is a popular thing, believe me when I say that it can shut down your big stuff stupidly easily. Personally I find Extra Armour a waste of points; in my experience Crew Stunned rarely comes up.

>Only thing to look out for are blasts bigger than 5" which I don't think will be likely in a 1500 point game.

Blasts are not your problem. I've played Dread Mob quite a bit and here's my list of biggest fears.

1. Melta. Typically delivered via drop-pod on Turn 1.

2. Grav. Either it outright kills you or it immobilizes you, which is pretty much the same.

3. Haywire. This would be higher if it were more common. If you find yourself against an Ad Mech player, shake his hand warmly and congratulate him on his victory.

4. Super-heavy Walkers/Gargantuans. The list has quite literally no answer for either. A single Knight is a major threat.

5. Other walkers. SM Dreads, Soulgrinders; they hit before you and you have to be supremely lucky to take them down at range.

I try to buy from local stores when i'm buying just straight up GW product usually, and I buy all my paints/supplies/terrain there as well.

However, I will NOT support Forgeworld prices but I still love the models, so I buy recast FW. The only exception was Samus because..well, idk, I wanted him right away so I pre-ordered him, and when I FINALLY get Zarakynel I'll get her legit too.

One of my friends has experience as both a GW employee and someone who makes his own models and he says that FW literally has zero logistical reason for the prices, its simply the 'brand'. If you observe their website, you can see FW prices just getting higher, and higher, and HIGHER, which is ridiculous considering they were already asking 100$+ Canadian for ten marines :/.

Can blood angels use drop pods in their very first turn?

i played a match this week where a guy had like 3 drop pods he deployed on his first move, i was basically tabled by like the end of the 2nd turn?
>>
>>46112291
Half (rounded up) of somoene's drop pods come turn one.
The other half rolls for reserves as usual from turn 2.
This is excluding formations/special detachments
>>
>>46112291
Yeah, but he could only have done that if he had 5+ pods overall.
>>
>>46112291
Yes, half of all drop pods can come in turn one (so he should have had at least 5 drop pods in his list to do that).

he had 3 total, so i got bamboozled

I play
A) Sisters of Battle
B) Vostroyan firstborn

I feel I'm well within my rights to get my hands on my OOP minis.

>I play

That's literally me too
>>
>>46112061

yeah,as i understand it, it's the first color after priming
>>
>>46112061
Lots of people confuse priming with base color. Don't be like them. Your final example is correct.

I posted yesterday pretty much before the thread died.. I'm going to be painting my first minis soon. Any specially good resources / PDFs that may come in handy?
(I saw the 2 replies yesterday and I'm looking into those atm)

Thanks!

even if you don't need to paint the models in question, these videos are a good resource

You sound like a fun guy to hang around with. Lots of friends I assume?

I get it, but somewhere at the core of 40k, there are electric guitars riffing heavy metal.
>>
>>46111104
CSM are going to get rules, right? Daemons and Space Wolves are all formationed out, and they wouldn't do an entire book of nothing by random Imperial factions.
