Hey teegee, I was wondering if I could pick your collective consciousness for additional opinions on a conundrum I'm facing. I'm looking to start up a second army, and I know that my primary detachment will be inquisition, but obviously inquisition forces do not a full army make. So obviously I need some other ways to bulk up the force, and I'm not sure if I want to focus on Admech or IG. I'll likely end up with some of both, but I'm not sure what elements I want to use and in what proportions.

I haven't entirely worked out all the fluff for it, but the core concept is an ordo xenos inquisitor roughly inspired by Sturm from advance wars (possible other sources of inspiration I might mine are Darth Vader and Big Boss) whose motto is 'there's no kill like overkill'. I know I'll probably run him with rad grenades in a squad of skitarii vanguard with some other melee kit for a unit that can do close range shooting and assault. Beyond that though, I'm not sure what I want to do with the rest of the army. In keeping with the advance wars inspiration, the onagers do kinda remind me of the neo-tanks, and I also actually personally like the taurox.

I also like the idea of taking a deathstrike, because it just fits the theme too well, but overall I still think I like the aesthetics of the admech stuff more. I just don't know what I want to focus on first, I have a fairly limited budget (that new start collecting box looks pretty nice for admech, I must say) and I'm not sure what bits I can actually fit together and have work well. I think I could maybe do like an emperor's blade assault company and an emperor's wrath artillery company to get most of the core ig stuff I want, but then how many points does that leave for admech stuff?

I guess I just don't know where I want to start with the list, is what I'm asking? Like I said, just looking for outside opinions, I'm not necessarily looking to sweep any tourneys or anything.
>>
>>44644224
Christ, I must be unlucky as fuck.
>>
>>44644172
I've painted no more than twenty models, and even then I haven't finished washed the ones I call done because I feel like there's more basing to do even if I can't see it.
And my terminators die like bitches everytime I use them.
Barring that one time my DW knights trounced a two mobs of boyz spread half way cross the board.
>>
>>44644402
Couldn't even tell they were recasts in this case, also not abandoned, being slightly tweaked. I might be field them all today too :o
>>
>>44644172
Commander Dawnfire is in charge of a Tau
scouting fleet and beat a Necron Overlord in glorious melee combat (he actually did crunch wise. it was back in 6th) and stole his resurrection Orb as a trophy and wears it on his battle suit.

It's just a normal Orb of Eternity and now he's being hunted down

Then 7th edition Necrons and Tau came out and we just lost interest because of how unfun that match up is now.
>>
>>44644455
I'd say to focus on the Imperial Guard as the bulk of the Army as cannon fodder, Skitarii as elite troops and special vehicles, and the Inquisition for the command group.

It sounds like a really neat idea.
>>
>>44644172

All my real games with it have been against tau. Won one, lost 2, although one of the losses was still undeciced on turn 6.

Gk are great fun.
>>
>>44644650
I guess if I take the IG as a CAD I could get most of what I want done with less baggage (even if it is probably pretty appealing baggage) and take some extra tauroxes in fast attack to cart my skitarii around. Scout confers to transports, right?
>>
>>44644794
Yep. Rangers in transports would give it to them, and they'd get a full 12" movement from it.
>>
>>44644455
Well what is your combat doctrine?

Quick strike to vital areas? Long battles of attrition? Highly mobile? Slowly moving upwards through mass fire power?
>>
>>44644846
I was thinking vanguard would probably benefit more from them, no? Maybe see if I can't squeeze in a psykana division for lots of divination, make those rad weapons nice and scary. I haven't checked the points cost on the psykana division yet, though,
>>
What kinds of non-chaos heresy might a renegade marine chapter engage in?
>>
>>44644892
Right, Vanguard would probably be better. Get them into close range for their guns and any potential assaults.
>>
>>44644993
Consorting with Xenos? Modifying tech? Not following the teachings of the Codex Astartes?
>>
>>44644869
Well, I really like the idea of having a lot of scary big long-range heavy hitters in the back benefiting from spotters up front. Like I love servo skulls and some artillery guided by those for area denial would be great. In general actually I tend to play for board control a lot, like when I saw kastellans my first thought was that it'd be cool to park a shooty unit of them somewhere and dare the enemy to come in range.

Well fluff wise the Death Korps of Krieg are the masters of that kind of warfare. They also have the benefit of having more non vehicle artillery so they benefit from orders.

They also provide Cannon fodder that won't break and run at the first sign of danger. They're not quite ATSKNF, but far better than regular IG.

Hmm... This is making me consider what Space Marine chapters have the most reasonable/genuinely heroic approaches.

>Dark Angels:

Despite working in secret, heavily devoted to purging chaos and in league with Xenos with ties to an interfaction anti-chaos organisation. High points on the reasonable scale. Bit shady on the heroic scale.

>Space Wolves

Kicked those smug silver-armoured morons in the teeth for their edgy team killing bollocks. On the other hand, drunken viking berzerkers.

High heroism, low reasonableness.

>Ultramarines

Defend a large region of the Imperium in pretty good living conditions. Not a bad balance of both. Masturbate to a book and more loyal to their empire within an empire to the imperium as a whole though.

Who else?

Tau guys.
Who operate on a planet whose Winter is so unbearable freezing it kills anything on the surface, so all the cities have to be built inside mountains. There's one surface city but it's been built in a hundreds-of-kilometers-long gorge that is so deep the bottom is coated totally in lava and magma, so it's warm enough to have the city built on the gorge's sides after getting half a kilometer or so down from the surface, that's the planet's capital. The planet's sky is covered in grey clouds and there's an enormous perpetual snowstorm that travels along the surface.
During the planet's summer season it's still freezing but the surface can be traveled on without everything from fire warriors to devilfish to battlesuits freezing up and dying. The planet itself is valuable because it's got huge deposits of valuable material, including a lot of surface deposits that are hard to get too because you can only mine them for half an orbital period at a time.

For the actual army I only have fluff for the commanders. One is a Kauyon specialist, the other is a Mont'ka specialist and the two work in tandem.

Multiple characters in an expensive unit combining rules and buffs into something clearly beyond how they were intended to be run.
>>
>>44646542

Could you name examples?
>>
>>44646516
Deathstars are groups of hard-hitting and hard-to-kill units, generally a warlord and cohort but can also apply to other units and will generally will make up a good portion of the army. They used to be annoying to deal with but there's a lot of stuff out that hurts deathstars such as the abundance of AP2 now.
>>
>>44646448
The Eight are 1500 points on their own.

Crisis suits are 22 points base. 32 if you spring for bodyguards.

Assuming basic suits though, that's 1188 points more, and that's just for the Crisis suits without any weapons, and skipping on the Broadsides or Riptides.

If you wanted 1 burst cannon or flamer per crisis suit, it's another 270. Double that for 2 per.

So around 3288 total, assuming the cheapest 2 guns per suit. If you want anything better, it'll probably end up at 3500.

>>

Generally a bad idea however, in that you then end up sinking an insane number of points on characters.

I guess you could theoretically have all useful characters for the Deathstar, but you will be overdoing the point investment.
>>
>>44646754

I have been known to play that shit.

I throw an overlord with a warscythe from my reclamation legion + orikan and oberyn in there.

Besides never dying it also kills anything it touches ... wether blobs, vehicles or superheavy / gc's

Oberyn also has the built in veil to get them to the middle of a zone you need to control quickly.

Other than that veil, theyre slow as fuck though. If the opponent opts to stear clear of that third of the table, youve got a lot of wasted firepower tied up there.
>>

Unless you're playing against top-tier competitive armies, Fire Warriors will do just fine.

>>

Well, then the only solution is to join O'vesa to a 9 man Stealth Team.
>>
>>44646827
Not that gut but I was going to ask what people think about flyers.

I've just come back to the game after about 12 years. My favourite army was always eldar so I'm going back to them regardless of their current state. But I'm conscious of trying to keep it at least reasonably cheese free. I always loved swooping hawks and I really like the fliers in the game now so was looking at making up a crimson death formation (3 crimson hunters), swooping hawk aspect host and guardian battle host to run as a war host. Kind of a small defensive ground force with flying support.

My question is, is the crimson death formation too cheesey for smaller points values? I've only played smaller games so haven't really come across any fliers.
>>
>>44647014
Wrong, the wording is that an independent character can't join monstrous creatures.

Which is why the Wraithseer is fine. Because it "technically" is a MC joining a squad of non MCs. And it has Independent Character.
>>
>>44647047
It might be a bit much in lower point games, but the main benefit of the formation is anti-air support anyway.

I did the math, and the Tiger Shark AX 1 0 should cost less points than the regular Tiger Shark... But it costs more instead.

Essentially because whilst yes, it does upgrade it's ion gun to a superheavy railgun... It also gives up a unit of 14 drones to do so, meaning it costs the upgrade cost of the gun plus a tax for nonexistent drones.

"THOUSANDS of years ago when the EMPEROR walked among Man, he begot 18 sons who led the Imperium with fury and grace.

But HORUS, the Eldest son was overcome by greed and envy. He rebelled against his father and declared himself the TRUE Emperor.

WHEN THE HERETICS laid siege to Holy Terra, The EMPEROR, SANGUINUS, and two of his other sons teleported onto Horus' flagship. SANGUINUS gave his life to put a chink in Horus' armor, and THE EMPEROR then smote him with a single strike.

After the DEATH of SANGUINUS, the Emperor was moved with grief, and declared that he would rule over Man from his GOLDEN THRONE, never again walking among us, for so many men betrayed him in siding with Horus.

Since then, SANGUINUS has been remembered as the Patron Saint of Martyrs, and the Emperor has guided us from His Golden Throne."

>Why are Eldar AoC with the Imperium while Tau are Desperate allies with the Imperium, but AoC with Necrons?
Because the Allies matrix often is only written from 1 army's perspective.

For instance, Eldar are AoC with tons of people simply because they have no problem manipulating another army to do their dirty work, and maybe fighting alongside them right at the end. But 99% of all Imperium commanders would kill themselves before even considering using an Eldar army to fulfill their own ends.

Same with the Imperium and Tau, the Imperium would usually rather die than work together, but the Tau are perfectly happy to work alongside Humans, even moreso than Eldar, so what gives?

The simply fact is that the part of the matrix with Eldar is written from the Eldar's perspective, and the part with the Tau is written from the Imperium's perspective.

Black knights come stock Corvus Hammers which have S+1 and Rending.

I played a fun game a while back. I used my Death Wing, and my friends used only Warriors and Immortals, he pumped like 20 shots long range and 40 shots at half in to my (now) footslogging units, with only 1 of his 20 warrior squad before I got a chance to assault. We played on a low scale, but you can imagine his 40 Warriors pumping round after round in to a terminator unit, forcing them to take a copious amount of saves each round.
Like a boss, 2 members still survived from one squad and 1 from the other, to make it in to assault. The two man squad actually won combat, and made him break of the field. As you can imagine he had moved back to his deployment quite a bit. The lone guy held the line and kept the combat going. Allowing me to get my reserves back in to the fight!

All in all, a blast. It really felt as though Terminator armor was indestructible at times!

First of, WYSIWYG is no longer a "rule" as it is not in the big rule book anymore.
And If you do house rule WYSIWYG I do suggest you keep it to "special weapons" such as a melta gun being a melta gun and not a rocket launcher and so forth. Not only to lift the game esthetic wise, but mainly to be polite to your opponent so no confusion erupts in mid fight on what weapon is what, and so forth.

It is how ever NOT suggested to apply this rule to unit bound wargear that is clearly stated in the "wargear" section of a miniature/squad. If it says the space marine tac squad has bolt pistols, then ALL models have bolt pistols, no matter if the actual figure has it or not!
