For the cost of a modest nicotine habit, what'd be the best voice service to use? Fuck Skype to be honest, and Hangouts is honestly worse. Should obviously be free for regular users.
>>

Discord. It's free, has decent features like being able to adjust the volume of shitheads that can't sort out their mic settings on their own, some other things.

Are there any programs that do high quality webcam video without Skype's overhead?

Video chat has such perversely high demands I doubt it. It's part of why I stopped doing them, the other being that I always have the weird urge to dress up for it.

>Discord. It's free, has decent features like being able to adjust the volume of shitheads that can't sort out their mic settings on their own, some other things.
Hmm. At a glance it looks kind of interesting. What's the drawback?
>>
>>44340017
>Video chat has such perversely high demands I doubt it.

I'm just trying to run a decent stream, and I can't do it when everyone has low-res shit video because Skype can't handle it.

If I knew it would make things better, I'd buy decent webcams and backdrops for my players, but they wouldn't put more effort in anyway, so I just hope for the best.

Hasn't been around long, don't know how long it'll continue being both good and free.

That's cynicism talking, though. There may be other problems but I haven't run into anything world-ending yet.

Campaign is going to be starting in January, I am begining to select players already today
Its a rather "big" campaign, expect a lot of Roleplay rather then rollplay - don´t bother if you´ll flake in a month or so.

I am looking for players willing to immerse themselves in a story

Themes: Horror, Adventure in Spesh, Political intrigue, Epic Adventure.

Don´t need to know the system by heart at all, willing to take new players as long as they are stable.

I'm mostly looking for a D&D 5E campaign. I have a couple character ideas in mind already for a bard, cleric, druid, monk, or warlock character, but I can also make up something completely new/different if needed as well. I'm especially interested in making a NG Human Cleric, I've got a mock character sheet if you'd be interested in looking it over to see the general ideas I had in mind.
Also, I've only ever played custom campaigns with homebrew worlds/universes before, so embarrassingly I don't know much about official D&D cities/worlds/etc. More than willing to read up/learn about the setting, though.
I have some experience playing with 5E, and I do have a copy of the PHB as a pdf so I can easily read up on rules/races/etc and can refresh myself on anything I may have forgotten.
>>
>>44342783
>NG human cleric
Why are you so interested in making that a character? Seems pretty boring to me.
>>
>>44342783
>going into a game with a character already made

pls never do this
>>
>>44342823
Because sometimes you don't want to be a tiefling paladin with a tragic backstory or a half-orc noble druid multiclassed with barbarian or something crazy. I recently played in a very grimdark "edgy" game and realized I wanted to just calm down and play something simple. Other people can play the wacky low-WIS maxed-INT wizard, maybe sometime in the future I'll even want to stat up some ridiculous thing. But sometimes you just want to play a simple human cleric who likes doing nice things and enjoys the simple pleasures of life.

Sorry for rambling a little
>>
>>44342858

I didn't realize this was a problem. All I did was fill out stats (that can easily be redone in minutes) and equipment to show the sort of...direction I wanted to take the character? Oops
>>
>>44342914

That other guy is autistic and looking for things to cry about.

Any GM will tell you what needs to be done for character submission into his or her game. Don't worry about it.
>>
>>44342858

Seriously, this.

I basically reject people who have preconcieved notions about what they're playing before hearing anything about game concept outright.

At least it's a clear warning sign of who's going to be the shitter who can't roleplay.
>>
>>44343323
>>44342914

>>44342858 here.

The reason I tend to reject pre-made sheets is because having a sheet made before you've even met me or the group tells me a) you don't care much about my setting and/or houserules, b) you don't care much about the other players and forming connections to their characters, and c) you want to play THAT CHARACTER RIGHT NOW and will throw a fit if you don't get to for one reason or another.

That's *more* okay if it's 'I am an NG cleric' instead of 'I am a ten year old half-fae catboy trap who is also secretly the prince of the entire fairy realm' because one is more setting agnostic than the other, and I'd be much more willing to let it slide, but in my mind bringing a completed sheet is a definite warning sign.

No matter what you do, you're still making a character at the same time everyone else does, though, so you all can all do connections and backstories and stuff and make characters that compliment each other.

Also, if this posts like three times, I am terribly sorry; 4chan is being a shit.

>>
>>44344581
It depends on what he means with a "mock character sheet". Stats? Background? Personality?
>>
>>44344253

NG cleric player guy here. This actually makes a lot of sense, I see the possible problems from this.

My internal reasoning for the "premade" character sheet wasn't that I wanted to use the exact sheet I'd made, it was more "This is the general idea/theme I'd like to go for". I purposely left over half of it blank so that if I got into a group and the general idea was OK'd with the GM, I could properly remake the sheet and better fit it in with everyone else's backstories and the plot.

This was also the first time I've ever had an interest in playing a cleric in 5E, so I practiced with the sheet so if I joined a game in the future I wouldn't look like an idiot and have to ask a dozen questions about basic character creation. I wanted to see the different ways a cleric could be built so that in a campaign, if they needed a tank I could focus on trying to build a STR-based cleric or if they needed more of a pure healer I could figure out more easily how to make that work.

I believe the only things I filled in were the ability scores, which I assumed I'd have to redo anyways since different DMs use different stat allocations, the cleric's domain and I believe I placed a few skill proficiencies but not even all of them. I didn't even pick a character bond or flaw or a deity because I knew I'd have to talk with a DM about what was acceptable and what would fit best (and what deities even existed in his campaign).

But I totally understand what everyone is trying to say. I guess I never considered I could come across like that to some people, that really wasn't my intention at all. I'll try and be more considerate in the future. This is the first time I've tried finding games online so I guess I'm gonna make a couple embarrassing mistakes. Should I just delete my search post and rewrite it to post again at a later date?

>>44344709
Nah, I'm the one giving you shit and even I think you're fine (now that you've clarified it's just kind of feeling things out instead of coming into the game with a fully done sheet and insisting on using it). Sorry if I seemed a little harsh.

I hope you find a game; I don't know shit about 5e or I'd try and throw something quick together for you.

Why would you do that to yourself? Well, other than a oneshot out of curiosity.
>>
>>44345270
I just thought it would be better with the lack of metaplot and the streamlined selections for PCs. Obviously, not the best idea in the world - so I decided it would be best to run it as V20 instead.
>>

You do know that depends entirely on the GM.
You can run, say, a starter pack of whichever edition to get a similar result. Or make some characters for the players to choose from.

Not to mention 5e backgrounds give you skills and advantages associated with them, as well as mechanic that rewards roleplaying them. Why not leave the fucking thing in peace? It works fine.

Hi. That's my house rule. It's just a tweak on the Background Proficiency rule from the DMG. Basically if it's related to your bio your character is good at it and gets proficiency. Otherwise your character is at disadvantage. The disadvantage bit is because I feel that having or not having proficiency is far too small a difference. A trained athlete is only marginally better than anyone else with the vanilla rules.

People are free to not like the rule, but I think that calling it 'autism' is a bit harsh.
>>
>>44359327

Yep. Other people have already done the math, but I have looked at it. There's stuff like this:
http://onlinedungeonmaster.com/2012/05/24/advantage-and-disadvantage-in-dd-next-the-math/

The re-roll is only one way (disadvantage if unskilled) and the difference at DC10 levels is about a -5, and at DC15 is about a -4. The positive side is that a character can still attempt DC15+ activities, they're just less likely to succeed.

>>
>>44359714
At the same time you're cutting their chance of success for average tasks (you know, the easier stuff that a vanilla unskilled character might reasonably attempt) by half, into the realm of extreme unlikelyness.
What this results in is a character that's pigeonholed into their 'one sentece' (a whole new can of worms, by the way) background, with little chance of doing anything else.

in my experience anyone who even thinks they have technical mastery of the system will not hesitate to jump in when what you are doing seems (to them anyway) to defy the rules. They will then verbally abuse you and attempt to "correct" you.
>>
>>44360462

Nah, if they're GMs, they know the pain.

I for one, will try and remind the GM of the rules, generally in the most nonthreatening way possible, then continue playing along, as long as it seems like it isn't a mistake.

Hardfire on skype. Look for the one from Canada, the picture should be of a surprised looking woman.

>Additional Notes
Setting questions can be easily answered by me, and there's also plenty of stuff in the roll20 just written. I'm aware the first session being in two days is a little funky, but we just had a last-minute drop from a player due to scheduling conflicts, and I'm a little desperate here. If you want to join, but just either don't want to or can't make a character within the two days, by all means, just hop in the next session. It's not the optimal thing for me, but I don't want a repeat of the last game I ran where people's changing work schedules left me with only two players.

Accepting any learned or novice players. Simple D6 is a very easy system to run and learn. The campaign will be a Final Fantasy/Star Wars-esque scifi/fantasy adventure and focus on character interaction between themselves and also with the world. Already have three players, need one final one to round things out so we can begin.
Level 2.
Campaign intro (homebrew)-
Cheliax is a great and evil devil-worshipping empire on Golarion, bordered to a prior vassal, freedom-loving Andoran. Conflict between them quietly simmers. On a lower level, we have the Bellflower Network, a secret organization dedicated to freeing Cheliax's large population of mostly-halfling slaves. You will all take the role of Bellflower operatives, 'tillers', charged with seeing these slaves to safety along an underground railroad of sorts. I'll be following more precisely the rules for starvation and survival out in the elements to make moving thirty slaves through the wilderness more challenging and rewarding. You will also be involved in the Bellflower Network's greatest operation; the disruption of the upcoming first World Slave Market, held in Cheliax, where slavers from all over the world will come to share experience and sell slaves. You'll all perform tasks to set up the operation, and if you have enough success and show enough promise, you'll get a chance to shape the operation and design much of it yourselves. All goes well, the campaign will finish with one epic great escape. Welcome to Pathfinder: Harvest Run

This takes place in the Republic of Sapphire, a mysterious nation that has appeared at (20.573165, 142.544954) around 100 BC. The culture is highly stratified, the old modes of thought only dissolving slowly.

The culture is was founded in 150 by Chinese Legalists who had been exiled by the Han Dynasty. While they kept vague relations with the motherland the two cultures diverged at an increasing rate, eventually adopting Zen Buddhism from Japanese monks as it fit their ideals far better.

It used to be a Spanish colony for a while but gained independence a while ago.

Skype may be shit but it has awesome features and is generally stable.
Hangouts is mostly just really convenient and light.

Both are cross platform too.

There are also other things, but those are mostly poorly optimized, and very linux-y. In that it looks like shit, you have to click more than in other software to do something, and even simple tasks like adding an account require a fair amount of IT knowledge.

Nah I more mean I want to run games for /tg/ (GURPS or 5e) but I've never run a game online before and I've never run a system other than Pathfinder before. Should I just put that info in the post? I don't want to mess up and ruin the game for players. But I really want to GM something and get better.
>>
>>44429741
Sure, put it in the post. Most people don't really care if the GM is experienced or not, and you can totally ask them or /tg/ in general for advice.
>>
>>44429741
Just say that you're unfamiliar with the system/ playing online and that they should take that into consideration when they apply. So yeah, post that.

I got started in the hobby by just picking a game I wanted to play, posting an ad here, and running it. That simple. I didn't know what the fuck I was doing at first but it all worked out in the end. You can't get good at GMing if you never GM, and despite what some people claim, being a player hardly does anything to benefit GM ability. So if you want to GM, just do it.

I was with you until this, that's just plain bullshit.

If you can read and understand rules (and have decent storytelling skills) you can GM. Having been a player before isn't going to magically make you any better at those things. It's really not as hard as people make it out to be.
>>
>>44433299
I don't think you understood what he said. He said that you don't have to have any experience as a player to be a good GM. And that is true, you don't. He didn't say that players aren't necessary to the GM. That would not be sane.

No, but it sure as hell is going to give you an idea what you liked and disliked from other GMs.

>>44433477
>If you can read and understand rules (and have decent storytelling skills) you can GM. Having been a player before isn't going to magically make you any better at those things. It's really not as hard as people make it out to be.

This fallacy implies telling a story is all there is to GMing. You need to realize that a good story for a movie, vidya game or book will not neccessarily translate to a good traditional game. You CAN write, pace and convey one without time as a player if you listen to your players and they're willing to give very direct and unfiltered feedback. But time as a player is going to benefit you a lot more in the way of picking out bad GM traits.
>>
>>44434024
Yes, you have to have some intuition and talent for the medium if you don't have experience. that is true for every medium. What is your point here?
>>
>>44433980
Australia
>>
>>44434115
The point is that your argument only applies to lucky cases of severe statistical outliers. I'm saying this as someone that has played in games with those kind of people.

Most of the time, being a player is going to directly improve your GMing skill, as long as you're paying attention to what the GM is doing.
>>
>>44433937
>>44433980
Also I just checked Roll20, it appears to load just fine, for now at least
>>
>>44434192
Assuming you are. Which is actually not what I noticed, in my experience players mostly focus on their own shtick, on roleplaying and trying to influence the story. I don't really expect people to be so good at multitasking to be able to roleplay well AND pay close enough attention to what the GM is doing and why to get better at it. Then again, I've met some reeeaaal bricks in my time, people who wouldn't be able to run a game if their life depended on it.

I think that the best way to learn how to GM is to just GM and I stand by it, playing games teaches you how to play well, not how to run well and those are rather different roles in the medium as it is.
>>
>>44434192
I do actually agree with you here. My original point was just that if the guy wants to GM, he shouldn't feel nervous about it just because lack of experience (as either a GM or a player). If you've got the motivation then just do it and learn as you go. There are completely different skillsets involved in being a good player or GM, so you might as well do whichever one you're actually interested and start picking up experience as soon as possible to get good at it.
>>
>>44434392
>I don't really expect people to be so good at multitasking to be able to roleplay well AND pay close enough attention to what the GM is doing and why to get better at it.

This is why you look at what happened in retrospect, ask questions after the sessions and so on so forth.

You're entitled to your viewpoint, anon. But a lot of GMs I've played with could do with some time as a player in their own games.

A lot of bad GMs often forget the sheer time investment the medium involves, which you can only really learn by playing in a lengthy game with a largely unsatisfying resolution.

Basically, what I'm saying is. You need to witness a horrible fuck up to prevent it. And even then, if you're the one making said fuck up, you're likely to not notice. (Bad GMs rarely ever notice their own faults, unless the players catch them in their early 'career' so to speak.)

>those are rather different roles in the medium as it is.

The important skills of both are largely the same, with a few extra pieces added on for the GM. (Pacing, some degree of planning and a tad bit more flexibility for the most part, I'm probably missing something.)

Tabletop roleplaying is an interractive medium. It's not as simple as the GM presenting a story and the players populating its roles. Even if it looks like it at first glance.

>>44434455
I'm with you on the part of not being discouraged. I'm just playing devils advocate to point out several of the mistakes every first time GM is likely to make, especially when they haven't played before.

I really want to play in a long term group I'll put on work to make this happen. I'm looking for a small to large group, not a solo campaign, I don't really have a preference in regards to class/role. I'll even join an established group that needs another member. I'm a proactive player.

Hey anyone doing a Pathfinder game? Most the games ive been in are just spegs and/or fell apart.
>>
So would anyone be interested in a fantasy game with no player controlled magic? Would anyone continue to be interested if that game was play by post?
>>
>>44446065
I quite like the idea of play by post, actually. I'm a busy adult with a job and a life, and play by post is really convenient for that. Plus it keeps the game going instead of having to wait a week or whatever for the session.

In short, yes.
>>
>>44339994

Hi, this game is now closed to new players. We got through our first session with... some amount of PC death... but the players appear to be troopers and determined to push forward.

>>44437084

Sorry, not at the moment.
>>
>>44446065
Yes and yes! Are you running a game like that?
>>
Does anyone have tips for actually running a game online, not necessarily rounding up players and stuff, I'm more asking about the "workflow" of running a session. How hard is it to set up a game on roll20, and what are the steps? What do you prefer as a GM when running an online session?

Sorry if this is an obvious question but for some reason I feel like theres a barrier for running a game online that doesn't exist with an in person session. However running a game online seems way more convenient in the sense that once you get the workflow down you can run a game pretty much whenever you want since players are everywhere.
