What are some good ways to make black armour pop? Going to be painting up some SM black but I'm worried about the base colour looking to bland.
>>
>>44335344
Edge highlighting with a grey color
>>
>>44335344
Basecoat leadbelcher then highlight with runefang steel then apply seven layers of nuln oil allowing each layer to dry before starting the next.
>>
>>44335483
Are there any examples of this being done?
>>
>>44335565
I don't have any pictures but a guy does it at my FLGS. The nuln oil makes the armor black enough but there's still a sheen to it, and it has natural highlights.
He does it with green for his grey knight swords and I saw him do it with blue for some Ultramarine commissions, it looks great.
It takes a few hours a model.
>>
>>44334918
Dude, just drybrush.
>>
>>44335344
just drybrush a dark grey, or some other colour if you want a different look.

Then highlight

done
>>
>>44335763
That would have been a better idea yes.
>>
> Oh, don't put primer on Reaper Bones, it melts the plastic they use
FOR FUCKS SAKES. I ended up spending 8 fucking hours on this one guy today. And of course I ended up giving up before finishing the highlights, because fucking yellow takes too many fucking coats.

I regret absolutely everything with this decision to make my half-drow paladin wear yellow armour.
>>
>>44336855
I've primed over the Bones figures before, no problems at all? What brand of primer were you using?
>>
>>44337028
Literally any primer. I can't really check what I've got right now, but it's some generic primer bought from a crafting store.

I was just told by 5+ people at my FLGS that primer melts the Reaper Bones. What primers do you use that you know don't melt them?
>>
>>44336855
I've never heard that before, I airbrush Vallejo primer onto Bones with no problem.
>>
>>44337072
I use Rustoleum American Accents. Primes with no problems, no melting or anything.
>>
>>44337126
>>44337090
I'll look into both of these in that case. And I'll probably also just use one of my spare bones zombies as a test dummy to see if the primer I'm already using works on them.

I don't want to spend 8 hours painting one guy ever again. That was just misery incarnate.

Started painting one of the Blood Warriors I got from the Secret Santa(Thanks again Aussie-anon). The red is super thick I know, its been awhile since I've painted red and I totally forgot to undercoat it, so thats like 6-7 coats of red over black. Next model I'll def use the airbrush instead.

>>44337167
I know your pain, love Bones but painting them can be a pain in the ass. I'll wash the model with soap and water but theres always that one spot I missed that the paint wont stick to. So frustrating
>>

Great advice, I'll go ahead and tell all of my clients to fuck themselves whenever they buy bones miniatures.

Also, I got these off my FLGS's rewards program. Free bones miniatures just for coming in and buying Monster Coffee to go with my 40k games is an offer I don't think I could not take.

So this is my first model ever, my bro got me a box of termagaunts about a year ago and I finally worked up the motivation to paint them.

Tell me how bad I am, I have no idea what I'm doing, how do i get good?
>>
>>44337859
Add a wash and put on some highlights and it'll be fine
Honestly as a starter you seem fine to me. What I'd really work on is your picture taking skills
>>
Is it easier/more common to glue a Daemon prince's shoulder and leg armor before priming and painting the body or after the skin it goes on top of is painted?
>>
>>44337650

Because you totally mentioned they weren't your models to begin with.
>>
I got a pewter mini with a slotted bottom and a slotted plastic base.

How the hell do you get them to stay. The gap is too wide for any glues I have. I don't think blutack is strong enough to be permanent.
>>
>>44338574

You need to fill it with epoxy/greenstuff. What I did was cut up square toothpicks and stuffed them in the gap and superglued it. Only took one toothpick's width. There's also thicker, gel superglue and similar products used to fill gaps and you can use that but you have to hold the model upright while it dries.
>>
>>44337289
Holy shit, Aussie-anon here, those look awesome man! Unfortunately I've been flat out cleaning my place for the relatives so I haven't even had a chance to touch my models. Thanks again, I've sent you something else (this time by proper mail) with my own Xmas card because I felt so shitty I didn't do it for you.

Also, this is the first time I've ever worked with Bones, what are the things I should look out for when prepping/painting (aka what do I do?)

Going to try greenstuff and ayumayu (or whatever its name is) for the first time, any advice?
>>
>>44340232
Keep your tools wet. Greenstuff might be easier to sculpt if you let it rest for few minutes after applying to miniature.
>>
>>44340232

First press small amounts into the most detail areas, Don't be afraid to apply a little force. After that you can just fill it up.

>>
I fucked a bit of gluing up, and I need to fix that.
I heard about putting in it the freezer, to break the superglue bond. But I'm concerned with the paintjob, will it be affected?
Superglue, plastic models, gw paints and no varnish if it matters.

>>44340430
The skin only really looks good at a distance, it's too thick and it's something I need to work on in the future, i'm still happy with the mini overall and it looks fine when on the table.
Skintone is basically done with a basecoat of GW Ratskin flesh then just adding white and shading the recesses.

So the paint won't break off, only the glue?
>>
>>44340522

xD diddies

>>44340561

It won't break off but it'll become brittle enough for you to safely snap it off with little resistance. You'll still have to wiggle off the rest with a knife.
>>
>>44340561
The glue bonds a lot of water in its structure, that's why the freezer treatment can get it loose. The paint evaporates most of the water, so it won't be damaged much by the cold.
>>
Are these brushes worth it? $10 dollariedoos a brush is what people tend to recommend. I need a full set as all mine were broken by some autistic fuck (long story). I'm ordering a bunch of stuff from this website, wondering if I should toss the brushes in too.

recommend me an airbrush

I've never used an airbrush before but it would be really useful for me.

I don't have a lot of space so something like this would be ideal:
seems a bit expensive though, and it doesn't have a tank or moisture trap

Is this one too cheap and shitty?
in some reviews people say it gets incredibly hot

thanks for any advice
>>
>>44341126
get a compressor with a tank on it.
>>
>>44341142
in reviews of the neoair they say it maintains pressure pretty well without a tank, does it make such a huge difference?
>>
>>44341126
A tank is a must have. It makes your airflow so much more stable. Also prevents the pump from overheating.

As for the brush itself, get yourself a good one. Yes that's expensive, but they'll last forever with the right care.
>>
>>44341157
If it uses multiple pistons, the flow should be fine, but that will still leave the heat. Most of these can't run continually for more than 10 - 15 minutes.
>>
>>44340694

They aren't dollar store tools, you just dodge taxes and european labor costs. The brushes themselves are great. You can also get windsor & newtons via aliexpress for 90$ a brush if you choose to. It's just a site that helps you dodge taxes.
>>
>>44341101

Just get vallejo airbrush primers and drybrush those on. I'm from the netherlands, the weather is almost always shit for priming.
>>
>>44341202

ok thanks, are there any acceptable air compressors for just priming, base-coating and rough shading that don't cost an arm and a leg?

I don't think I need a bambi bb8 and I definitely don't want to spend that much.
maybe I can adapt a cheaper compressor from a refrigerator or something?
I don't have any experience with airbrushing but I'm pretty handy when it comes to other stuff so I think I could do it.
>>
>>44341383

>>
Didn't get any tips from last time, so reposting

Scorched Brown
Drybrush of khemri brown
wash of agrax
light drybrush of bleached bones
>>
>>44339920
Wonderful work
>>
>>44341470
I live in an apartment building so I don't have somewhere to use a noisy compressor, and I'd have a hard time justifying the price of a lubricated compressor to my partner... an expensive oil compressor will have to wait until I have my own house. I guess I'll just get a cheap tankless one and stick to priming/basecoating with it for now.

I know somebody who works in a workshop where they surely have an air compressor. Might be able to get away with using it for any vehicles or 'showpiece' miniatures I do.

Thanks for the advice.

Prep Bones just like any other mini, wash with soap and water(use dish detergent and an old toothbrush to really get in there), then prime as you would normally or not, Bones can be painted without primer, its more difficult but can be done. As for model lines, I find most times files dont work well on them, so I usually just cut them off with a hobby knife and that can be messy if you take huge gouges out of the model which is easy as the material is real soft. Then paint and seal as normal.

Very cool I look forward to it!

It *must* be non-acetone nail polish remover and, as >>44342978 and >>44342997 say, don't let your stuff soak in it like you would with metal models and Dettol/Simple Green/Brake Fluid.

Dip your guys in it and scrub with an old toothbrush. Re-apply as needed, and rinse with lots of water when you're done.

What's a good way to paint servo skulls? Should I base them in white, black, or silver?
I don't want to experiment on them because stripping would be a nightmare, they're so small.
Anyone here have any tips?

cheapest I could find:

they're €8,25 and €9,50 respectively rather than €22 for the GW version.

Pinning drills are what you want. You can get a decent set at almost any hardware store or aliexpress. Any cheap one will do for plastic, the better ones can do metal too.

start by only picking out the extreme edges with a lighter tone of the same colour. Then pick out the outer most extremes with an even lighter colour (this will generally only be a small area).

That should help add a little definition to the model.

It looks pretty neat if you paint a dark brown into the crevices of the armor. The whole paint chipping thing can be done in a variety of colors. Something rusty like a dark terracotta could work well, depending on what you are going for.
There's a video on warhammer tv for some orky stuff that was painted that way. Can't remember exactly what it was they painted, maybe parts of the stompa, or the new kit that is slightly smaller.
There is also a pretty good WIP thread currently up on the BnC where a guy paints taurans like I mentioned above with red chips.

Total newbie here, I'm assembling my first bac marine and having doubts on whether or not I should glue the gun arm before or after primer.

What would be the most efficient way?

I'm using Zap a Gap glue if that matters.
>>
>>44353223
I play iron warriors, so the bolter and armor are the same color anyways, so I glue it before. I use plastic glue by the way, as it has a better bond than super glue because it melts the plastic together. for my blood angels, I glue the arms on, but leave the bolter off and just super glue it in after both the body and gun are painted, scraping some of the paint off the contact points so it glues better.
>>
>>44353223

I'm just learning the ropes with using an airbrush so I got the Amazon deal and have to say I'm perfectly fine with it. Honestly I think the whole needing a tank thing is really for people that actually use an airbrush more commercially, like painting their walls etc. These are mini's, your going to be using short controlled blasts.

For the price, I think it's great for a beginner, you can always splurge out on the more expensive equipment later when you actually know what your doing.

Thanks! Here's a small update, some skin base coated and a quick wash. The red I used is Heavy Red from Vallejo Game Color. Part of the reason it took so many coats is because that color is "extra opaque". Working on the skin, then highlights. Trying to have this guy wrapped up today.
