Alex's building UWR Twin right. No Helix. Only Two Resto. He should just not run any wall of omens.

Actually the basics are more for ghost quarter, the ability to fetch any color is really nice to have with four colors.

It's still upside down. Are you autistic?
>>
>>43829698
It was upside down when uploaded from my phone, I flipped it on the computer and it still came out like this. Fuck it, I give up.
>>
Before GP:

>UR Twin if you want to combo. Grixis if you want to grind. Temur if you want Tempo. Jeskai if you want to lose.

After GP:

>Yeah I always knew Jeskai was good. Has good sideboard cards and 4 paths.

Kill me.

ANYWAY. Just updated my list. I'm loving it
>>
>>43828787
>>43829865
Anyway. Autistic or not. I don't know if it's necessary to splsh white. You already have terminate and murderous cut. And if you really want Path, you might as well run 4 and no terminate?
>>
>>43830047
I still think that patriot and RUG and below Grixis which is below plain UR. The only "huge" positive for URw to me is the sideboard hate against burn, given that Grixis is also fair against Affinity without the use of sideboarding and RiP isn't really a player in modern.
>>
I run modern Collected Elves. Came second place at FNM losing to burn. I only have a problem with removal. Any anti-removal/red cards I should add to side board?
>>
>>43830261
The thing is a lot of people built UWR with 4 walls and 3-4 Lightning Helix, 4 Restos and 2 Kiki. I think it's much stronger to build it like UR Twin with Path and W sideboard cards. Not saying it's the best twin variation, but I think it's different not that much worse if at all than the other Twins.

Hey /modern/

Is it possible to build a competitive (i.e. deck that won't get stomped to shit) deck that takes advantage of Hellbent? Given dredge and flashback can have the grave act as a second hand (and both are black), I was curious.
>>
>>43830198
I find anymore the three paths gives the opponent too much extra land over the course of the game, especially when used in conjunction with snapcaster. Path is important to have though as it effectively removes wurmcoil. terminate over murderous cut as there is already too much strain on my graveyard from snappy, tasigur and kolaghans command.

Originally I was running three paths but one became izzet charm just for its versatility (the careful study mode is actually pretty great)

What the white is really there for is sideboard cards like wear and tear as well as Eidolon of Rhetoric.
>>
>>43830397
That's an obvious downside to path. But I like to think of it as "lands don't win them the game, the spells they play do". Eh. I know what you mean though.

Play what feels good to you. Though, At least I don't think you will need the basic plains. Ideally you would have Scalding Tarns instead of Flooded Strand. And then just have a Hallowed Fountain which you can fetch for with any of your 8 fetches.
>>
>>43830047
>>43828787
figure that twin players cant upload a photo the right way up.

>>
>>43830365
Well as far as the established decks go. 8 Rack and Lantern control likes to have no cards in hand. What is it that you want to play? A Grave yard deck or decks that work when you're hellbent?

A deck that works while hellbent. It's a mechanic I find very interesting, putting yourself at a distinct disadvantage but gaining access to powerful undercosted effects you don't typically see in Modern.
>>
>>43830315
This >>43831127

Every deck has a weakness. Affinity and elves get hit hard by board wipes. Don't over extend and maybe keep a company in hand to bounce back after a wipe
>>
>>43831240
Oh, specifically for the hellbent mechanic? I don't know of any decks. You might have to brew. But if you're looking for decks that like to have no cards in hand; there are a bunch of those decks.
>>
>>43831291

Interesting. You mentioned 8rack and Lantern Control, I can give them a look over for ideas. Anything else?
>>
>>43830536
I agree, basic plains will most likely become a sacred foundry, scalding tarn would be great but I'm not super competitive and the price is just too high.
>>
>>43831308
are you pretty new to the format?

8 rack is a discard deck. Basically you and your opponent won't have cards in hand, but you have enchantments in play that deal your opponent damage when they don't have cards in hand. That's how you win.

Lantern control is a control deck. You make it so that your opponents creatures can't attack. In fact, you control what they draw, so they never draw anything that can get them out of your lock. Eventually they concede or they slowly draw their whole library out after 50 turns.

Other than those two, Jund is a top tier deck that kinda don't mind playing with their hand empty, but it's not their main goal per se.
>>
>>43831379
btw, Lantern control runs Ensnaring Bridge. That's why you don't want cards in hand. You don't really discard your hand, but the deck is built so that it's very easy to play every card in your hand within a few turns.
>>
I'm thinking of trading my Standard stuff for Modern after having some luck with my investments (Jace, Ugin, etc I got on the cheap).

I was looking at Merfolk. Would this be a good deck for someone new to the format?
>>
>>43831431
Well, depends. What kind of deck do you like to play? Y
>>
>>43831443
I've recently started liking control more, but I heard Modern isn't much of a control format.

I just don't want to play something that's completely mindless.
>>
>>43831490
Play skred. It's awesome.
I brewed up a list of my own and have been dominating
>>
>>43831414
Does lantern run infernal tutor? Seems like itd be great for finding silver bullet cards
>>
>>43831490
Do you care about Tier?
>>
>>43831908
No it doesn't run Infernal Tutor. Most of the cards are artifacts. so they run Ancient Stirings. Also, once you have no cards in hand anyway, the lock is already set up. So you won't need to find anything else.
>>
>>43831944
Not really. I've been looking at mostly tier 2 stuff recently.

>>43831859
Never heard of it. I'll look it up.
>>
>>43832094
>Never heard of it. I'll look it up
It might not be best for new players. Requires extensive meta knowledge and honestly, I think most lists out there are bad. I can post mine when I get home of you're interested in mono re
red control. It's budget as well
>>
>>43832094
There aren't any traditional true control decks. As in 1 for 1 for 10 turns, then sphinx rev for 15.

If you wanna play control decks:

Tier 1 or 2:

-Tron: Very brainless. Strongest late game ever. Game plan is to not die earlier game with board wipes and OStone.

-UR Twin: Not brainless. 1 for 1 and 2 for 1 all game. Then win slowly with a 1 or 2 power creature or combo for the win.

-Lantern Control: Pretty brainless. your opponents creatures can't attack. and you control what they draw. They die when they naturally draw their whole library... slowly....

-Grixis Control: Not brainless. Grind it out with 2 for 1. Black's got some really good cards.

-UW Control: Not brainless. Sort of a new deck. 1 for 1 all game then drops a Sun Titan later to win.
>>
>>43832234
>skred
It isn't THAT hard to play. I think it's actually a really easy to play control deck compared to the other ones.
>>
>>43832094
You can always try u-Tron, it's a pretty traditional control deck with big mana finishers
>>
>>43832324
Lantern Controls win is not that slow. The deck is packed with mill rocks. Once they have a bunch of them on the field they will just mill their opponent out.

Here is Zac Elsik playing the deck in the finals of GP Oklahoma. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lau6uQ4_R0s
>>
>>43832416
You're right. It's still pretty slow compared to most other decks.
>>
>>43832439
That is true. But as a Lantern player myself, the slowest plays come from my opponent. My turn takes maybe 5-10 seconds. IF I'm drawing anything other than a land. Most turns it's just draw and pass.

Though the kill is slow, it is basically absolute so long as you make smart mill plays.
>>
>>43832513
>>43832513

>>
>>43832720
I suppose I did. Though there is always chinaman if your money is tight.
>>
>>43832356
It depends
No modern deck is THAT hard to play. you really need to pick your cards and when to play is huge. I didn't mean to imply it was superior in terms of thought but if you fuck up you're done. I haven't played much traditional control so that could be it too
It's just with skred I find I earn my wins more than more linear strategies
>>
>>43832990
Don't know any good sites to buy from Chinaman. And they always sell them in sets of stables. Like fuck, I don't want your fake Volcanic Islands. I just want the goyfs.
>>
>>43833079
That reminds me, where can you buy from chinamen? And how are their Goyfs? Any good?
>>
>>43833079

>>

Having a bit of an issue with LGS

First of all, he's charging 140$+tax for BFZ box(usd) but he has singles at SCG prices, so that's fine.

What's pissing me off is they do BOTH ID matching AND rare drafting at the end of FNM based on your placements. It's only a small group of about 10-20 on average, a good prerelease will be 50-60 people.

For the longest time, the shop owner just let us open our own packs.
Then recently when I opened a 25$ mythic after getting fuck all and stuck with the 50 cents rare every time, said I should have simply dropped.

Never gotten anything worthwhile out of opening his boxes either in the year I've been going. Got 2 fetch lands, ugin, lili, and a gideon. Then again only bought 3 boxes so far, so ain't that bad.

Next 2 times we are there for magic-related events store owner starts to say we have to give him the packs before event starts and he will play with them so nobody knows who's pack is who's.
I question him why is it not possible to just drop before the event starts and he says it's the buy-in so you can't do that, even though you can leave high-level drafts with all of your stuff.

The question is do I just say fuck this guy and his shop? Are his rules bullshit?
The game seems far too expensive and full of beta fags for my liking anyways.
For instance, one of the kids who is 15 has no money, and then goes and buys an intro pack 10 minutes before FNM starts, and then proceeds to bitch that his deck isn't working the way he wants it to, also has an even more autistic friend than himself, but thankfully he rarely shows up.

Sideboard is more entirely meta dependent.

I run cards such as ratchet bomb, earthquake, shatterstorm and defense grid. Boil is great.
It isn't tier 1 but it is powerful and I find it fun to play against all kinds of deck.

>>
Is it acceptable to use MSE to print off full-art basic lands with Bob Ross paintings as the art to use as your landbase?
>>
>>43834155
I find it fun to play. It has different ways to play depending on what deck you're up against.

The deck can require some thought. It's nearly braindead against aggro. Kill the creatures and drop your own with a Koth.

Control matchups and Jund/grindy type decks are the most fun. Playing around counters, knowing what to toss with looting, when to relic or get that extra Demigod a turn later.

Twin is easy.

It's surprisingly consistent. You have so much burn that you can deal with creatures making Exarch, Tasigur and Goyf easy targets for skred or blocking Reckoner.
Blood moon kills control. Just don't get greedy with it.

I think Shrine is a little too cute, but it can do a lot of damage as well so I keep it.

How long before they start to get the holographic rare symbol correct i wonder?

It's only a matter of time before someone develops the way to make a perfect magic card to where it looks and feels like, and passes all tests in one and then the market gets flooded and everything drops to pennies because nobody can tell the difference.

>>43834316
Probably not too long. I'd give it a few years max.

Though I do not think they will be reduced to pennies unless WotC does something. The whole reason people are even counterfeiting is because of the insane prices. If those prices drop so low, why bother counterfeiting? Eventually a middle ground will be reached.

Control isnt good in modern
These are the decks which are generally good
Tron - combo deck. Braindead, assemble 3 lands that tap for 7 mana, play big dudes or boardwipes
Abzan - midrange deck. Plays heaps of removal, value creatures/spells (lingering souls, tarmogoyf)
Jund - midrange deck. Plays way too much discard and removal, beaters (tarmogoyf, dark confidant). Basically aims to tempo you down then double Bolt you.
Twin - combo deck. Aims to put Kiki-Jiki/Splinter Twin on Deceiver Exarch/Pestermite. Different variants run different plans, however they are all fairly grindy decks.
Delver - aggro/tempo deck. Runs the most undercosted bullshit ever. Controls what you do and hits you with flyers. Can swarm you. Certain variants play from their graveyard
Afffinity - aggro deck. artifacts, free creatures. Vomits its hand on turn 1 and kills you. Dies to anything that hates on it

Nothing will be banned or unbanned. Wizards wants Modern to die a stagnant death so they can introduce post-Modern a year or two from now which contains cards from M15 onwards. Why else did you think they changed the border on cards? Their design direction has radically changed from 8th Ed to now, so they want to get those silly old powerful cards out of the way so we can turn some rhinos sideways.

I might drop the MD Shadow of Doubt for a PNK. The card spews a ton of value out for 4cmc. 4 power between 3 bodies is great, especially when 2 of them have evasion. PNK also acts as a Rise and Kolaghan's Command target and the Thopters can block an Etched Champion.
I shouldn't have to explain Keranos, but he's extremely good in the grindy or control matchups and is extremely difficult to remove once stuck to the battlefield.

>>43836168
$250+ for a playset is currently why not.
I may spoil myself for Christmas, wait for a drastic drop, or pick them up after they rotate out of standard.

>>
>>43837575
Just look it up on gatherer.

If the targeted creature is an illegal target by the time Grimgrin's last ability resolves, the entire ability is countered and none of its effects will occur. You won't put a +1/+1 counter on Grimgrin.

If the defending player controls no creatures when Grimgrin attacks, the last ability will be removed from the stack and have no effect.

As a Jundfag, the deck isn't completely kill. The only troublesome matchups are Tron, Scapeshift and Amulet Bloom. I sometimes lose to decks with gargatuan creature masses (Naya Zoo that keeps drawing Nacatls, Goyfs, Smiters, Knights, Voices and Companies non-stop is bullshit hard to stop) but other than that the deck has lots of game. I cut Bob to have a better aggro matchup and it has been pretty successful. I do miss running more than 2 Thoughtseize, however. Definetely would help against my poor matchups.
>>

Proxy some decks with friends. Find what you like best. Once you do, buy the cards for it.

Unban THAT thing? Fuck off. Sure it technically improves control, but it would make Twin unbearably consistent.

Amulet of vigor is almost certainly getting the ban hammer before the next modern pro tour anyway. Getting rid of tron is hardly "taking all the power out of modern" like you so dramatically exaggerated. Blood moon is a terribly designed card because it doesn't really change anything in modern deck construction due to its existence, it just sometimes accidentally wins you the game when you cast it. I've seen just as many players lose to their own blood moon as win with it. Choke is just a powerful, yet insanely narrow hate card, you basically only bring it in vs twin decks and if you're playing green aren't you already playing other answers?
>>
I'm going to a "Chaos" sealed event this weekend.

The packs are:
1x BFZ
1x Origins
1x Khans
3x Choose any combination of the following:
Modern Masters 2015, Innistrad, Kamigawa, Mirrodin, Return to Ravnica, Conspiracy

What should I pick? I started playing after Theros, so I'm not really familiar with any of these sets limited wise. My first instinct is to just take 3x MM15 due to the value, but I have no real clue.

If I played Twin I would never suggest such a thing, because Snapcaster is a HUGE source of consistency. Don't you think running the full 8 Thoughtseize/Inquisition is a bit much? Most people go the 3-3 route these days, but I guess they can win you games just like that thus 8 is not all that bad if you got the slots. 4 champions in the main also seems like overkill.

Have you tested the Vent? Your manabase seems lax enough to handle it.
>>
>>43843051
60 cards per deck
6 copies of Thoughtseize/Inquisition
1 copy per 10 cards
7 cards per opening hand
Let's call it a 70% chance of having one in your opening hand
66% of games in a match needed to win
70 > 66
Therefore only 6 copies required to hit your opponent on enough turn 1s to be relevant
They're also really fucking bad topdecks so 8 is stupid
