>While Perez’s swing proved the game winner, Hosmer’s rocket single off Jose Fernandez in the third inning put him in position to win MVP. It wasn’t lost on his teammates. Miguel Cabrera, the two-time MVP whose Detroit Tigers are almost even with the Royals in the AL Central, went up to Yost and told him he didn’t want to come into the game until after Hosmer’s third at-bat because it might seal the MVP award. Even though Hosmer grounded out to start the sixth inning, it didn’t lessen Cabrera’s gesture.

>“He was already one of my favorite guys in the league,” Hosmer said. “When he does something like that – listen, I know he’s the best first baseman in the game. I know he’s the best player in the game. And there was no bitterness as far as not being the starter. For him to do that says a lot about his character and really stands out to me.”

Crazy that in 1976 (US population 218M), the MLB All Star game had 36.5M viewers.

There are players being paid more than 30 million dollars per year. Baseball is well and truly alive, nfl is merely siphoning off the kinds of viewers that like handegg, and is that really any kind of loss?

Try putting it into context, Jamal.

>Despite the steep record-low, baseball’s Midsummer Classic is still the highest rated and most-watched All-Star event in sports. The NFL Pro Bowl had a 4.5 rating and 8.0 million viewers on ESPN in January, and the NBA All-Star Game drew a 4.3 and 7.6 million on TNT and TBS in February.

>>
>>69548496

I have no clue.

My pet theory is that a lot of American baseball haters were forced into Little League by their dads and had a traumatic experience.

Like so:

>Successful baseball players, including future Hall of Famer Derek Jeter, fail around seven out of ten times at the plate as hitters. Most young children do not possess the resiliency or fortitude to deal with this. Frequently, kids strike out more than one time in a game. This leaves them feeling dejected and demoralized when riding home in the backseat of their parents’ car.

When you're a kid, you don't have that same spotlight on you playing soccer or basketball. A missed shot in basketball isn't a big event like a strikeout or dropped pop fly is.

>Other sports provide more opportunities for redemption. When a player strikes out in baseball, he may not get another chance to hit for 30-45 minutes. But, if he misses a shot in soccer or basketball, he is likely to get another chance within the next few. Similarly, if he makes an error in baseball, he may not get another chance to make a clean play for the rest of that game. In today’s society, few people want to dedicate themselves to refining the skills of baseball while dealing with the frequency of failure on game day.

They'll say they hate it because it's boring, etc, but no one goes actively out of their way to hate boring things. You usually ignore them.
>>
>>69546838
you could also watch condensed games when you can't stay up and watch.
>>
>>69548584
so basically, kids are so conditioned to being special snowflakes with participation awards that they can't handle failure

>>69548602

Likely so. From that same article:

>Contemporary society has been sneered at by aging adults for the “every player is a winner” mentality and advent of the participation trophy. A 2012 comedy film, Parental Guidance, depicts this theme as Billy Crystal is disgusted by the absence of winners, losers, and strikeouts at his grandson’s Little League game. Even though youth baseball may offer encouragement and trophies to all, it correlates less with this overall feel-good trend. Parents want their children to have a smile on their faces at all times regardless of performance. The merits of the Protestant work ethic and learning from difficult experiences are philosophies of the 20th century, not 2015. When there is a pitcher and batter competing in each at-bat throughout the game, one person wins and one person loses. Not everyone is a winner in baseball.

I'm sure we all played here, and baseball can make you feel like absolute shit, especially if you're responsible for striking out in a situation where a hit might've won the game. Or you booted a grounder. Dropped a fly. Etc.

In basketball, a kid could miss ten shots, but still feel redeemed if he made one, so on the ride home, mommy and daddy can pump him up about that one good shot he made.

What's a parent gonna tell a kid who went 0-4 with four strikeouts and dropped 4 pop flies, which is a common performance for a below average Little Leaguer?

I was such a fucking crybaby when I played baseball. Cried all the fucking time all the way to my freshman year of high school when I quit because I couldn't stop fucking crying.
Would have certainly quit sooner if my dad didn't pressure me. And he doesn't even like baseball very much, doesn't watch it at all. But he went fucking crazy during my games, always yelling, even getting thrown out sometimes.
I actually liked playing but I just couldn't control my emotions, especially after I made an error in the field, feels bad. Turned off of baseball for a couple years around when I quit but it's back to being my favorite sport easily now.

Similar boat. I was an pretty good player, and never had that soul crushing moment, but what fucked me up was not making All Stars and watching coaches' son with his .179 batting average and the like make it.

Killed my confidence and I quit a couple years after.

Wish I would've stuck it out, so I kind of understand why fathers push their sons not to quit. You always do wind up regretting it. You get older, and see that failure is not the end of the world, but when you're 11, it indeed is.

I guess people really don't understand how baseball works nowadays.
Either you're good at developing pitching, you're mediocre at developing pitching, or you're shit at it. It doesn't really matter which arms you bring in.
Teams that are good at bringing in arms and developing them: cardinals, giants, mets, rays, etc
red sox happen to be a team that is complete shit at it
you could give them giolito, glasnow, and urias and they would all end up as trash
put all three on a team like the cardinals and they're all all stars
