I'm a casual, and pushing 30, but here's my perspective.
I think mostly because I'd like to be him. Wealthy, healthy, handsome, aging gracefully, an air of class about him. When I'm watching a match, sometimes I find myself wondering what it's like to live his life. Not in an obsessive way, but just a flash here and there, between points, maybe during a close up or a shot of his wife shouting encouragement.
But also, I like to see players still successful as they near the end of their careers. If they still have it in them, perhaps I still have it in me.
This isn't something you really understand until you age and start seeing fewer and fewer athletes your age. In your best moments you're excited for young players, but as they challenge and surpass your favorite athletes, knocking them off their perch, you begin to resent them. You enjoy them because they remind you of your youth, while also resenting them because they remind you that you're not young anymore. Now they are your competition. Now they are a threat.
So it's complex, I think. I find myself cheering for Venus and Serena, though I spent much of my life disliking them. I cheer for Federer, whereas before I was indifferent. I love seeing Hingis still around. I always hated Nadal, but now I have a soft spot for him and hope he can get it back together.
I'm rambling a bit, but I hope some of that made sense. That's why I like Federer.
