1. Nets still had like 40M in cap space with needs, so why not use it. Someone was going to have to overpay Johnson so miami possibly doesn't rematch anyway.
2. Nets have no picks, therefore need young talent. Johnson is young and has played well for miami, even if he hasn't played an entire season. Nets have a coach now that's regarded as one of the best player development coaches (helped Lin, Teague, Bazemore, Horford with his jump shot and driving, etc), so it gives them an opportunity get a young guy and make him better possibly. The idea is that the last half of the contract where he's geting paid about 18M-19M (which would be 12M in last year's market) will be justifiable.
