I don't think I was ever deluded enough to think I would be in the NBA. I did think I could player at a pretty good University though. I was something of a prodigy in grade school and middle school. Some people even thought I was gonna be the next great player for my high school team. In middle school had great handles at a young age and during camps that the older high school players would always be really impressed by me. At a young age my shooting was way better than everyone else but for some reason it just stopped getting better at some point despite practicing all the time. I think I have really bad muscle memory or something.
I grew to be 6 feet tall which is more than fine for a guard in high school so it's not like I got fucked there (though most of the men in my family are taller than me and my 15 year old brother is the same height as me already and still growing). My parents made me play AAU basketball for a lot of my life and even made me go to 1-on-1 workouts with this guy that plays professional ball overseas and was back home for the summer. I worked so hard to be good especially before my senior year, but it didn't matter, I always collapsed in actual games when it mattered most. I remember even dominating a couple preseason games against legit teams thinking this would finally be year. But it didn't matter how good I was in practice or in the preseason. I always collapsed when it mattered. Pretty sure I had 8 or 9 turnovers in a game during the season, the coaches kept track of all our stats and let everyone see them, including our percentages. I shot something like under 20% from three, around 40% from the free throw line and like 30% from the field if that. It was devastating for me and I still think about it all the time. Even my friend who quit playing basketball his junior year to smoke weed and get fat and decided to play again as a senior even ended up ahead of me in the rotation by the end of the season. /blog post
