A big US market would probably get close to the same ad deals as a big Canadian market and negate that difference. Especially if those big Canadian markets put the same kind of pressure as Toronto.

True but they also didn't play nearly as physical. Some off the "big" hits they took in the 80s were softer than a player finishing his check nowadays. Players that initiate the hit are basically invincible so they'll go all out but in the 80s you had flimsy pads. Shotblocking in the 80s meant something. Now, unless you get hit in the skate/cup/glove or it's Weber you're basically fine.
