Let's all post congratulations to Ichiro on tying Pete Rose for the most hits of all time!

It's not like worst NFL team against best college team, MLB and NPB team are both pro in this case

>>68508005
in 1 game a college team could beat the world series champion

even a 7 game series in baseball is pretty random.

But I'd say the worst MLB team would win a 7 game series against the best NPB team a good majority of the time

>>68508357
sports*
>>
>>68508316
Scratch that. It really wouldn't be a good game, and the MLB team would win 9 times out of 10
>>
Ichiro should play his last season in Japan 2bqh. It'd make for great headlines.
>>
Wait, is this actually a thing? Why isn't Pau Gasol getting his Spanish league stats added to his total?
>>
>>68506026
If you're going to count Ichiro's hits in leagues other than MLB, then you have to count Rose's as well.

Rose had 427 hits in the minors, which is just about where Japanese ball is.

Maybe in a three years, Ichiro will get there.
>>
>>68508486
this, I hope he plays a couple more actually.
counting both his and Rose's minor league stats he's still almost 300 hits shy
>>
>>68508496
Bob Nightengale used to be a competent beat writer for the Royals, decades ago. Since then, he's been struggling to gain any attention.

>>
>>68508607
No they're not retard. They're showing how stupid it is to count hits from another inferior league
>>
I will give him this: if you compare base hits only, they are similar.

If you want to throw in walks, times-on-base, doubles, stolen bases, etc., then it's Rose by a mile. not even close.

But banging out singles? Ichiro may be the best ever. Yay, him.
>>
>>68508236
NPB resides between MLB and AAA in skill level, it's obviously not the same as MLB but it's better than the minors.
>>
>>68506206

>>
>>68508643
A professional league, nonetheless. Should people not count any of Pele's goals because he played in shitty ass Brazil and U.S. leagues?
>>
there's a good reason nobody compares Sadaharu Oh to Barry Bonds or Hank Aaron or Babe Ruth.

Inferior competition.
>>
>>68508674
throw in obp and slugging, advantage rose

throw in stolen bases (baserunning) and fielding, advantage ichiro

ichiro has 60 WAR in 16 seasons
rose had 80 WAR in 24 seasons

if anything slight edge to ichiro

>>68508749
lots of people don't
>>
>>68508749
Minor League is also professional league you retard
>>
>>68508749
>Should people not count any of Pele's goals because he played in shitty ass Brazil and U.S. leagues?

The whole Pele has 1000 goals is bullshit that he himself fabricated by counting goals in youth matches and shit. Messi is the true GOAT.
>>
Rose is right but it's funny as hell to watch him cling so desperately to his record since he's never getting into the hall.
>>
Hey let's talk about Joe Baumann!

Until Barry came along, Joe had the single season HR record for decades. Yeah, he hit 72 HR in only 138 games in 1954 for the Roswell Rockets.

this thread is bad and you should feel bad for posting in it.

>>68506026
The records are MLB records so idk why people are saying this. Is there any other record that accounts for stats in any besides MLB?
>>
>>68509084
Nope, just not as competitive as MLB. It's what you go through on your way to the Major leagues. It's all connected to each other
>>
Oddly enough, Rose isn't a good comp for Ichiro.

Probably his best recent comp is Kenny Lofton, although anyone who saw him play would tell you that Lofton was a much greater hitter and baserunner, and his run totals in fewer games confirm that.

I always thought Kenny was on a HoF pace until he left the Tribe. not now tho.

Ichiro's other best comps are deadball hitters like Zach Wheat and Doc Cramer.
>>
in soccer terms, it's sort of like a player going from the Romanian league to Serie A and combining his stats from both leagues. It's the same sport but it's not the same level even if both are top professional leagues.

however Pete Rose is a crotchety asshole so I have no problem with the charade so long as the record books don't actually end up reflecting it.
>>
>>68509244
agreed. Rose can kiss my ass, but this comparison is stupid bait by second-rate sportswriters.
>>
There are a lot less games in a NPB season it's harder to get a lot of hits and it would be miraculous if he got this many just playing in Japan. He would probably have more hits if he came over earlier.
>>
>>68509236
>much greater hitter and baserunner
maybe for like 2 seasons

and if you're really treating ichiro as muh speedy player, then it's even worse that he missed the seasons he did, since those are the peak for speed.

Obviously Ichiro's NPB hit total shouldn't count as much. That's just not fair. To put in in perspective, let's take the case of Darvish, another great Japanese player. This career NPB ERA was sub 2.00. In the majors it's in the 3's.

Ichiro is a Hall of Famer and one of the greatest pure hitters of all time, but he's not the hit king. NPB is better than AAA but it is not as good as the majors and therein lies key.

I'm personally enjoying this Rose trolling and liking how much his Jimmies are getting rustled though, tbqh.

The Japanese league is for scrubs and guys who are too old to play in MLB. Pic related is the perfect example:

'95-'03 (age 23 to age 31): 46 HRs, 261 RBIs

'03-'08 (age 31 to age 36): 97 HRs, 416 RBIs

It's like the MLS of baseball.

>"Bass is also famous in Japan for the "Curse of the Colonel". Following the 1985 Series victory, revelers celebrated by calling off the names of team members one by one. At each name, a fan who looked like that player would jump into the filthy Dotonbori canal. For Bass, someone threw a life-sized model of Colonel Sanders, the mascot of Kentucky Fried Chicken and the only close-at-hand likeness of a bearded American, into the river. The statue disappeared and is said to have caused the subsequent decade-long dismal performance in the Central League.[3]"

>"In an attempt to remove the curse, fans made repeated attempts to find the model, making offerings to the statues of the Colonel for forgiveness. In 2003, when the Tigers returned to the Japan Series after 18 years with one of the worst records in the Central League, many KFC outlets in Kōbe and Ōsaka moved their Colonel Sanders statues inside until the series was over to protect them from rabid Tigers fans. The newly replaced Colonel Sanders statue in the Dotonbori KFC branch was bolted down to prevent a repeat of the incident"

Although the Tigers had authorized Bass to leave Japan, they later claimed that no such authorization had been given and fired Bass in absentia. However, Bass produced a tape recording establishing definitively that the Tigers had authorized his leave of absence. In disgrace, the General Manager of the Hanshin Tigers, Shingo Furuya, committed suicide.[2]

>Come to MLB at the age of 27
>Is going to amass THREE THOUSAND(3000) hits which is something only 29 players before him have done in the HISTORY OF MLB

Pretty sure he'd be the greatest hitter of all time had he played his whole career here. And comparing people who went from MLB to NPB and did well is not a great comparison, because if NPB is as shit as everyone seems to think it is, how had Ichiro had similar success in both leagues?

>>68510011
This guy is retarded because Warren Moon played in in the CFL, not the USFL. And again, Warren Moon is a guy who would have put up amazing numbers had he played in the NFL his whole career anyway.
>>
>>68510270
As it stands, yes Ichiro is the official hit king of PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL. No one is saying he is the hit king of MLB. But PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL, which would include the NPB. But everyone is getting butthurt because Pete Rose is butthurt.
>>
>>68513323
Very ignorant statement. There were was basically an unwritten gentleman's agreement between MLB and NPB barring players from coming over and vice versa for most of the time Ichiro was with the Blue Wave. Also you have to factor in national pride and a desire to play in Japan on the part of Japanese players. Even now there are strict limits on the number of foreign players an NPB team can have.

I do not believe Ichiro has truly surpassed Rose, and NPB is clearly an inferior league, but it is a good league and his career hits total puts him in the company of Rose and Cobb.

His hits in Japan should count for something. Saying they don't is like saying any soccer player who at one point didn't play in the Premier League or La Liga or something should have those goals not count toward their career total.

He'd be an ace in MLB right now if he played in the US. If he really hit 99mph/160kmh 31 times in a game, that is unreal. He'll be signed by the Yankees in a few years. My only concern would be as usual, the wear and tear on his arm. If he's throwing that hard added to the fact that Japanese pitchers throw more pitches than American pitchers, it would be a big concern for me.

Come on man, they are obviously talking about TOP LEVEL of professional leagues. And does everyone forget Rose was a fucking player manager and kept inserting himself into the lineup even when he clearly shouldn't have been playing?

Ichiro is a better hitter then Rose, period. And Ichiro doesn't even care about being called the professional hit king or WHATEVER, so the fact everyone else is getting butthurt about it makes it even more hilarious in the end.

Oh and reminder that Pete Rose said that "You could count his hits and Japan and he would never catch me" but now that he has he's acting all butthurt.

>He got all those hits because he'd swing at fucking anything.

Swinging at anything is not how you reach the 3,000 hit club in major league baseball. I think you lack basic knowledge of how baseball even works. If Ichiro "swung at fucking anything" he'd have a lower batting average and probably more dingers. Many MLB players have commented on Ichiro's phenomenal discipline and eye-hand coordination at the plate.

What is with all this Ichiro hate? What exactly is so shitty and threatening about him? He's a great player who is a class act and never juiced. I don't see how it's possible that anyone could dislike him as a player.

Prime Ichiro's OBP would be Mike Trout level, who ranks 2nd among active players.

Even with the latter 3rd of Ichiro's career bringing down his OBP, he still ranks 31st among active players.

That's by no means average.
