The plastic barriers are called tecpro and are better in situations where there's not much room like Monaco, Singapore, etc. They're not forced to have them, it's just more efficient in tight circuits. Baku is almost certainly going to end up cucked by fuel saving.
Just about every team was on the limit of fuel saving in Canada and learning from last year, I don't think any of them underfueled or anything so they had a maximum load. If Canada was a problem with fuel, Baku is going to be even worse.
THERE IS A TWO KILOMETER FLAT OUT SECTION. The whole track is quite fast anyway. Apparently the turns after the narrow section and before the straight are going to all be flat anyway. So literally half the lap going flat out. It's going to be so bad for the fuel.

what is happening
People seem to forget that Max was racing carts less than 4 years ago and just by that metric, combined with his age, should have no business being anywhere close to a race seat for the next 5 years or so. He is in his second season of F1 and now in his 4th race for a big team with big pressures. He is literally still in the zone of "mistakes are acceptable", yet he is not even badly off the pace of Ricciardo and seemingly somewhat equal in terms of race pace.
Ricciardo is now a great driver, but he's already "done his growing". He wasn't anything spectacular in Toro Rosso but really proved himself against Vettel and from there on grew to be a consistent upper quartile driver in the current field. Max is just out of being a rookie and is still the youngest person to race an F1 car, meaning he still has the time and potential to become better. Whether he can actually become better is another story, but the point is that he is already a good driver with potential to become even better, whereas it's hard to see Ricciardo become any better than he already even is.
At any rate the Ricciardo/Verstappen pairing is probably the most interesting on the grid right now and whoever ends up beating the other will probably be regarded as a true top-tier driver by everyone who matters.

Baku is 2 hrs tops and Le Mans is 24. Assuming the start or finish don't coincide with Baku then there's no real point. I get Le Mans is prestigious and difficult but it is not that exciting to watch. Last year in particular, almost nothing happened. And by nothing I mean no real extensive racing for position in the LMP1 category and really not even that many spectacular crashes or incidents in general. Of course every race is different but if anything cool ends up happening they'll show it 100 times and have a recap of what has happened

We don't know how well he handles the big pressures (fighting for a title) but so far, I think he has shown that he is actually the "real deal" and his joining of F1 was not hugely premature. If Vandoorne has a season like Vertappen did when he eventually gets to F1, people will call him a great success. If Palmer did a few moves like Max did then people would be calling him a good racer. Point being is that Max already exceeded expectations and had a rough but impressive first season. Everyone expected him to choke or be immature but he is racing with better confidence and brains than many experienced drivers (see vs. Rosberg).
Also F1 has literally never been about merit alone. It's almost always a combination of right place right time, right connections, right sponsors and right results. The only person who made it to F1 off the top of my head without any significant backing, and basically on merit alone was Gimi and even that was rare in his era and practically impossible in current era

Actually, I'd say that the whole thing started to go to shit exactly in 2009.
They started using too much SC in the wet, removing gravel traps and neutering and dropping older European tracks.
They also brought in regulations that made F1 impossible to do on smaller budgets just to appease the manufacturers (who left anyway).

2013 was painful yes but the other seasons were fine and at least the Red Bull wasn't 100% indestructible second clear off the rest in every single race
MWL is the most dominant era in the history of F1 and they aren't even a likable team and there's no real rivalry between the drivers, both of whom are now PR drones so theres absolutely nothing to get excited about

After 2010 and especially after 2011 there was no hope that he would actually challenge. I didn't go into the weekend thinking "wow, Webber might actually get pole!" or "Webber might actually convert his pole into a win!". It was going to be Vettel or another team.
With Nico sometimes I actually find the hope that he will get pole, or will get the win, and sometimes he does, which is always a relief. But the majority of the time, particularly last year, it just ends in disappointment. It's made worse by the fact that, while I like Rosberg, I wouldn't be cheering for him, but he's literally the only option for a win.
