Second scenario you score a try and take too long, in which case you're at least in with a chance of a draw. Third scenario you score quickly, and seeing as you're attacking you are the one deciding the pace of the game, and you have the ability to push for the win (which you would have needed to do anyway had you taken the penalty goal), except now you only need to get in range and then draw a penalty or kick a drop goal rather than needing to take it a full 90m.

Sometimes things work and sometimes they don't, obviously you're a better chance scoring close to the line than from your own half but sometimes the rub of the green goes your way and sometimes it doesn't.

This IS simple stuff, you just don't seem to get it. You make the best possible result worse for a better chance of attaining it or go for the best possible result with worse odds.
