you sound exactly like my best friend. same height as you, exact same thing happened where he filled in as keeper, and ended up being dominant. he ended up sticking there all through high school and his club teams, got offered a spot on a Division III college team, but there was an older, taller, and probably better keeper in front of him, so he never ended up playing a minute and quit. he's still so bitter about becoming a keeper. he's playing as a winger on our men's league team and he's the best player on the field every game in a league with a lot of ex-D1 and D2 guys.
if you're still young and have any actual aspirations of playing at a higher level, switch positions now. you'll never be taken seriously as a 5'8" keeper no matter how good you are.

Yeah I am 30 now, so although we went to regionals for adult mens soccer, we are more of a group of guys with jobs that play hard then go drink. I am not to worried about it at all. We dominate the local adult leagues, but when we go out of state we end up playing against a bunch of college kids and although we never get blown out, when the 70th minute happens and the other team can sub in 7 19 year olds at once, we can't keep up.
Although if we mark tight, nobody can put their backs to us and turn around us, because we are bigger and stronger than the lanky speedy youngins.
One of our players is 50 years old but played in the scottish premier league when he was young. His knees are blown out so he can't run fast but the guy can take a free kick and put it onto a dime. And his throughballs are magic.
