Lad, I'm against them as well, but those crashes have pretty much nothing to do with the sort of incidents which would call upon the halo/aeroscreen solution.
>>67992345
FIA said that the aeroscreen will give a lot of aerodynamic advantage to Red Bull
so they're going for halo.

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/124524
>It is understood the aeroscreen is also heading in a direction the FIA is not keen to pursue at this stage, although it is far from off the table for 2018 onwards.
>For now, a modified version of the halo - first seen on the Ferrari during pre-season testing at Barcelona - is scheduled for further safety testing on June 24.
>Providing the upgraded halo passes these tests then it will be formally approved at the next technical regulations meeting on July 6.
So we will have aggressive looking cars with big fat tyres and a stupid halo will ruin it all, well done FIA
>>67995249
*at least for 2017 as you people said
>>67995249
Any reason why they prefer the halo over a windscreen? I guess the only things I can think of would be when it's wet out, and bug/debris buildup, but that one can be solved with tear away screen protectors like other motorsports at least
>>67995672
Because they came up with it

>>67996012
you're a dumbass. People die driving to work, that doesn't mean car companies stop trying to make them safer. Same thing goes for F1, you'd rather see more people die from getting brain damage from flying debris? A guy in Indycar was killed last year by just that
>>67996386
Which no halo prevents.
>>67996012
>So fucking what?? When did this happen?
Brands Hatch, 2009: At a formula 3 race Henry Surtees is killed by an errant tire bouncing off his head.
Hungaroring, 2009: Massa gets hit by a spring, knocks him out and spears into the barrier.
Pocono, 2015: At an Indycar race Justin Wilson is killed when a nosecone from Sage Karam's car somehow hits him in the head. Wilson was in a coma and died the following day.
Honestly I wish they went with the Aeroscreen device instead of the halo; it is a more attractive option so I hope they can work at it some more. Ditto with that of the halo; it's ugly as hell.

Yet no one was screaming for halos then? Why? Because this whole thing is about Jules anyways, not debris. Instead of knee jerk reactions maybe don't allow 12 ton tractors onto the race track? Hmmmm, better make a halo instead.
>>67996740
who cares what spurred it? Not denying the Jules incident was stupid, but if it's something that can increase safety without impacting the racing or performance, why not do it
>>67996634
It came DOWN on his head. It also weighed 8lbs, so if the spring that caught massa nearly killed no halo does anything anyways, it's like an artillery shell.

>>67996740
>>Hungaroring, 2009: Massa gets hit by a spring, knocks him out and spears into the barrier.
>Yet no one was screaming for halos then?
Actually, you're wrong on that one. They were testing closed cockpits then and at the time FIA couldn't find a suitable way for driver egress if the car flips over. The halo and aeroscreen devices allow egress because the car isn't fully enclosed. The Justin Wilson death was what brought this into action though I don't doubt there were people working on (semi)closed cockpits in the years prior.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-h6GHEEWR_U
Also to note, top fuel dragsters have been running closed cockpits or aeroscreened cockpits for a while, like this or picture related:

>>67998447
>i want the drivers to be as safe as fucking possible, hell make them invincible
Dunno about you m8 but if it's too safe then I don't enjoy the high speeds and the racing as much.
The balance a driver has to keep between going as fast as possible without going over the limit, (because going over it can hurt him, not simply knock him out of a race) is where driver skill comes to the fore even more. It separates the men from the boys.
Like Damon Hill once said, racing is the balance of speed versus the driver's mortality. How far a driver is willing (& more importantly, safely able) to take it, is a measure of how good he is.
Once you remove mortality (or even the scope of injury) from the equation, all you get is carbabbies. Whoever gets the best car wins, since they're not having to balance a driver's willingness and ability to take risks into the equation.
With the advent of telemetry and the rise in safety over the past two decades, this has become apparent, seen in the narrower and narrower gaps between drivers through the whole grid.
With a safe car, Its much easier to reach the absolute limit, since if a driver in a quick car is slow, he knows he can take more risks to speed up (& exactly where he has to do so, thanks to telemetry), without having to think as much about how it could work out negatively for him.
So, drivers approach the limit of their machinery and the limit of the track much more easily than they could in decades past.
This in turn leads to processional racing since everyone knows exactly where the limit is, and the car performance is the major differentiator.
Does anyone know exactly what Michael Schumacher's condition is?
Everything I read about it is so vague. Is he full on vegetable? Can he walk or talk?
Mind = obliterated that Monaco is smaller in size than central park.
>>67999873
I feel bad saying it but my guess is that he's a vegetable. His family probably just don't want anyone else to know or see him in such a state.
I don't think there's any real chance he can recover to the point where he can walk around and talk (from what I hear).
>>67999873
According to the most recent rumors, he is 'reacting' to treatment (t. Montezemolo), progress is 'slow' (t. Kehm).
The unsubstantiated rumors (t. Phillipe Streiff) are that he's paralysed, in a wheelchair, can't speak, has memory issues, but can respond to voices, and cries when his kids and wife speak to him.
He has also become Mr. Skeltal, weighing around 50 kilos.
Again, though, these are rumors.
The only official update is 'very slow progress'

Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. One year ago we saw Hulkenberg win Le Mans. One year later we saw Rossi win the Indy 500. A question for all of you. Is Rossi the American Hulkenberg, by winning a legendary race but seemingly not fulfilling his potential in every other races he does? Is he better than Hulkenberg, worse? For Baku, did the tyres have to be confirmed 8 weeks beforehand or 14 weeks?

You have a point, but Spain is the most abrasive track surface of the calendar, so... Ultras should only last a couple of laps anyway, they still last way to long. There doesn't seem to be that much difference between the ultra soft and the super soft, in grip nor in durability.

>People think Monaco is indicative of the Ultra soft tire's performance
Why are people so stupid? It changes considerably based on the track. Monaco was very cool, actually still wet, the laptimes were slower than normal due to wetness, and the track itself has a very smooth surface and is generally very easy on tires assuming you don't hit the barriers. It's basically the perfect storm of making the ultrasoft seem like an invincible tire.
If it's a hot day in Canada, the ultras will last like 7-12 laps or something. They tested the tries in Barcelona and everyone said that the tires are crazy with the deg and were finished after 1 quali lap. Granted, Barcelona is a track that is notoriously brutal on tires. This is based on the assumption that Pirelli didn't actually change the compound and if they did then they're fucking idiots (which wouldn't surprise me).
Just like the Supersoft lasted like 7 laps in China and lasted ~50 in Monaco just now. Monaco is a freak race and an outlier in almost every metric of F1 and is basically just unique, so I am ok with the fact that Pirelli didn't specifically engineer 1 tire compound that works in Monaco only because they would be beyond useless on any other track save for Singapore or something. I'm going to guess the ultrasofts are going to deg much more drastically in Singapore as well.

HALO
>ugly as sin and looks incredibly intrusive
>offers no protection against accidents like Massa and things like Button and the drain cover in FP
>offers no protection against debris etc
CANOPY
>also intrusive looking but a see-through canopy will blend to the car much better, like an extended visor that is already on the cars, much easier to get used to visually
>offers full protection against accidents like Massa and debris in general
>literally all the same protections as the halo
Why is FIA going for the Halo again? Its like they have moved on from actively trying to kill the drivers to actively trying to kill the whole sport. Viewership is already down in key markets because no one gives a shit about hybrid tech and shitty sounds, and no one gives a shit about a canopy that is not even necessary. People watch F1 for the danger, the crashes, the craziness. All people want is for crazy cars to go fast as fuck and sound like they're on the verge of exploding, is that too much to ask? Like 2% or less of F1 fans actually care about the tech and I'd bet like 20% of active fans couldn't even name what the engine that currently used is. Probably like 1-2% of the fans have a vague understanding of how the engine even works.
People watched shitty progression races with like 3 overtakes total during SchumiWinsLOL era in higher numbers than they watch the current shit. People actually just want fast awesome cars and even a progression race is ok if it looks like the drivers are at least trying to drive fast
its not that hard, F1 deserves their downfall and eventual bankruptcy

The era of fast, dangerous racing was an era in which cars were sold based on performance (as surrogates for a man's heterosexual potency).
Now that what matters to people is their phone, not their car, and what they want is an autonomous, electric, and most of all safe (i.e., *not* dangerous) vehicle that they don't have to think about - even while in it - racing has changed to reflect the more vaginal males called "millennials."
Seriously, what gets more positive social play these days - a man fighting with other men to fuck bitches, or a man cutting his dick off to be more like a woman?
Racing just reflects what matters in society.

Have to agree. Now that the Maldozer is gone, we need a new baddie, and a bitter angry Kvyat could play that role pretty well.

Hi guys! Karun here. Ask me anything you like

Have you ever taken a shit in a toilet?
>>68019661
Early 2000s F1 is what I grew up with, so I guess it's nostalgia, for one.
The other fact is that it is early enough to not be covered with ugly winglets all over, and still has clean curves and lines, and it's late enough past the 90s to not be boxy.
>>68019958
Yes, as a higher-caste Indian, proper bathroom facilities are a luxury afforded to us. I've heard that there are only 3,000 toilets in India that aren't a hole cut in a plank of wood!

Major rules change in '09. Practically all winglets, aero add ons were illegal from '09 onwards.

>>68020015
What's that about? I haven't encountered that sort of thing before as I'm not a frequenter on 4chan.
>>68020021
Currently the series has plans to increase its speed in season 3 and 4, and season 5 will introduce a single car for the whole race without having to change batteries.

F1 used to look pretty good.
Daniil Kvyat says Toro Rosso needs to "gets its s**t together" after problems cost both he and team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr. during last weekend's Monaco Grand Prix.
Kek, does he want to get fired?
>>68021176
well he's Russian, they don't give a shit.
>>68021176
He doesn't care anymore, although he did get dealt some top notch bullshit at monaco.
Meanwhile, Jaques Villeneuve keeps shitting on amx. While I understand some of the criticism, is there any personal beef going on? Did Jos fuck/beat his wife or something?
>>68021431
Maybe it's because of Jos' cuntness, maybe it's because Jacques sprays diahrrea all over the place every time he opens his mouth-ass-combo, or maybe it's because it's actually annoying how overhyped Amx is.
>>68021514
sjaak is just projecting onto amx
>>68021514
Combination of them all.
Aadmmx is good and could become great, but he shouldn't have been placed in a Bull that soon. He has a looooot to learn. Only did one year of F3 ffs.
>>68021514
>it's actually annoying how overhyped Amx is
So much this. I'm really glad he crashed 3 times in one weekend after Barcelona. The fanboys might tone it down just a little bit now.
but guys mad max won his first GP at RBR! it was truly a "miracle" that both the mercs crashed out, ricciardo sandbagged, kimi sandbagged, and vettel DNF'd. surely all of that is purely coincidence though
>>68021576
> Vettel DNF'd
> Ricciardo sandbagged
What?
Sure, RBR & Ferrari gave him & Raikonen the better strat but I wouldn't argue it qas an easy win.
Besides, compare Lewis' fucking comments after his Monaco "win" to Max' after the Spain win. At least the guy recognizes there was luck involved.
>>68021514
Honestly I'd almost wish amx got third in spain instead so there wasn't even more ridiculous hype. It would've still been an impressive result and he wouldn't be seen as the second coming of jesus christ. He's fast, but Monaco was still only his second race in a new car, on a very unforgiving track. I'm only going to expect real consistent podium results from next year on really.
But yeah, Jos is a cunt for sure and Jaques seems to be exactly the character he looks like
>>68021575
at least you are not dutch and had to go through two weeks of amx worshipping on every fucking dutch tv channel.
I like the guy, good skills and all, go amx, make Holland great again etc, but for fuck sake!
