People don't like Pocono because people don't like difficult, technical racetracks where a combination of strategy, skill and cunning are necessary to win. They prefer cookie cutter 1.5s instead.
Pocono's a very difficult racetrack and it poses a lot of unique challenges, so if you're not a total pleb then its interesting.

With a wind tunnel you're still getting specific ride height/rake/yaw settings. You can take a map average but that still doesn't necessarily represent the track.
Anyways it's sideforce that's the problem now, the point where the car starts spinning out comes sooner aerodynamically than mechanically and it makes the cars really shit to drive in traffic.

I picked my favorite driver based on my Dad's favorite driver. His was Bill Elliott, and at the time I started watching Sterling Marlin was his team mate driving for Junior Johnson.
Since Sterling retired though I've been in favorite driver limbo. I try to get behind a guy but it isn't the same. I kinda like Austin Dillon, mostly because he's a diehard Panthers fan...but not to a point where I've started wearing his t-shirt and shit.
I did like Justin Allgaier when he drove for Penske...then that fizzled out. I still rooted for him when he started driving for Turner Scott, and even had a #51 t-shirt...but meh. I don't really have a Cup driver anymore.
So to answer your question, who fucking knows how to pick a driver, just do it.

the first two cup races I attended were Dale Jr's wins at pocono in 2014, he's been my favorite since the first one. everyone in the stands was cheering him on, I joined in, and I haven't stopped cheering him on since.
