I thought I could rely on the co-driver instead of memorizing stages but there's no way around it. learning the stage helps. you only get one shot at every corner it's not like circuit racing where you can make up for a mistake on the next lap.
So is Super Formula mainstream and popular now that Vandoorne is in it and scored a podium in his first race?
MotorsTV do a dubbed broadcast now and it's awesome because it's translated directly from the japanese commentary.
when Radio Le Mans was doing SuperGT it wasn't as good because it was a separate audio track so they didn't have pit lane reporter etc.

bet he had flashbacks to Schumacher when that happened lol
wait, did someone just die in the f3 race?
I am flying to Monaco on Monday, i've been there a few times before but this year i want to have some fun, so what i'm going to do is print off some of our best images, they'll be printed on A4 and i am going to stick them with strong double sided tape around the track, i think i have worked out where some of the best places would be, ie. on various barriers where the camera's should pick them up but should hopefully not be too obvious so some jobs worth track monkey will remove them.
It might work, it might not but i'm going to print quite a few off and give this a go, just for the hell of it.
I think one of the best places would be at Rascasse on the inside barrier, i'll be doing it before FP1 or as late as i can get away with before they completely close off the track.
I'm also going to try and stick something on one of the overhead sponsor signs around turns 4 and 5 and one in the tunnel.
I will update these threads throughout as proof i'm giving this a try and will update with pictures as i put them on the track, it's usually very busy down there during the day so the chances of getting caught are slim, i'm not even sure what would happen if i did but for that reason i won't be printing off anything too crazy, i will do 1 choco senna image though.
So if there is anything you want me to print off and stick on the Monaco track and get it seen by the TV cameras just post it and i'll keep doing them until my printer runs dry. If anyone has got any suggestions on where would be a good place to put these let me know.
The 3 pics posted are the ones i'm starting with, the massive understeer one should be pretty funny if that gets picked up.
Anyway, lets do this, it could be fucking hilarious to see on TV

It's an opportunity and i will feel like i've missed it if i don't at least try, for me if just 1 or 2 images is seen / not removed, thats a win.

>>67757753
Even worse are the assholes who take their dogs to the track.
I remember the story from an NHRA photographer who was shooting one of his first events, and he wasn't wearing hearing protection. After the first pair of fuel cars went by one of the other photogs looked at him and gestured to his ears. The new guy didn't understand what he meant. So he put his hand up to his own ear - and realized he was bleeding from his ears.
>>67758062
>dogs to the track
I'm surprised they don't ban that shit, although I suppose there's not a lot they can do outside the stands.
I've never been to any NHRA events but I've heard they are absolutely unbelievably loud.
>>67758236
There's no real way to control it (that I can think of, anyway), since many of the dogs are there with families who've been camping-RV'ing for the race weekend. The only real danger is the nitro cars, everything else is loud but not injuriously so. The alternative would be telling fans (or the racers themselves) they can't bring their families with pets, and that would be very much against the spirit of the sport.
Fuel is loud in a way that transcends the usual meaning and experience of loud. F1, NASCAR, Indy, those are loud (in slightly different ways, of course). But nitro cars - a nitro engine at full load makes nearly 11,000 HP - are loud in a way that the sound isn't something one hears with the ears as much as experiences with one's entire body. It's not a sound coming towards you, it's an unstoppable force moving through you. Fun.
Too bad the new 5- and 6-disc clutches are heat sensitive enough that teams no longer do throttle whacks in the pit warmups. It was great watching the sound waves sweep through the surrounding humanity.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7QGmsomid8
>>67758783
That video is incredible. That's pretty much exactly how I've seen it described before; as an all-consuming thing. Definitely going to have to try and experience that sometime.

>>67757753
>>67758062
I've been a lot since I was young and haven't worn ear plugs since I was like 12. I always thought they were for pussies, it takes away from the sound and never hurt my ears. Maybe I should reconsider.
I also didn't wear any when I went to the Austin GP, that was worse because it was constant, not 3 second bursts. I probably wouldn't do that again. Though they aren't as loud anymore.
Pic is from GP
>>67758952
i used to go to a lot of metal concerts when i was a kid and i have hearing problems because of it. i'd imagine a dragster is approximately a gorillion zillion infinity times louder than that
>>67759469
>>67759425
Yeah I fucked up my ears when I was in my teens and going to a lot of concerts/listening to loud music in earphones. I have a bit of tinnitus, I have to listen to stuff at night or I can't sleep, as well as hearing loss, so I'm always asking people to repeat what they are saying.
It's something I haven't fucked with in years for fear of making it worse, and it's one of the main things I tell kids that I know are putting themselves in those situations.
>>67759425
It's definitely way worse if it's a constant thing. i would probably go to a Top Fuel show (with ear protection), but I went to go see monster trucks last year with some friends and even with ear plugs I had to leave after about two hours, it just really got to me.
>>67758952
I agree about the idiocy of being that close with no hearing protection. I'm always shocked at how human beings proudly show off how stupid they are (*continues posting on 4chan as proof*) - but there are always a few people who insist on demonstrating how they think they don't need hearing protection or clean air.
That second point is important. If you're going to be near a fuel car when it's warming up, one of the combustion products of nitromethane is nitric acid. Breathing even a small snootful of the yellow cloud will leave you in pain for the rest of the day. When you stand next to a car, stand *upwind* - and remember, if you feel overwhelmed and need fresh air, cleaner air is *down* (the hot exhaust gases rise).

Ugh. I'm sorry. Tinnitus is a horrible affliction.
I live in a place where the unexplained audio phenomenon of "The Hum" - the audible humming of the Earth itself - is constant and *very* loud. It's like an environmental, low frequency version of tinnitus, sometimes loud enough that it's borderline painful. And like tinnitus there's no way to stop it, since low frequency sounds are coupled in to the auditory system as much through the mandible as the ear canal.
(That's why headphones are so dangerous, people don't realize the bass in loud music isn't coupled in through the ear, so to get the bass to sound "right" they turn the volume up far too loud and fry their cilia.)
Here's the audio spectrum of my local Hum - note the +30dB 60Hz (i.e., US power grid frequency) peak. This sound was recorded with a stereo field recorder in the middle of the environmental preserve near my house, far from any AC electrical equipment of any kind. The sound is omnidirectional (since it's coming from the Earth itself) and present for miles in every direction. It's bad enough I'm considering selling my house and moving somewhere there's no Hum.
Again, my very sincere sympathies about the tinnitus.

I live outside of Washington, D.C. - but I certainly wouldn't travel to hear it. It's not a fireworks kind of thing, more the aural equivalent of water torture. Think low-frequency nails on a chalkboard. Not really travel brochure stuff.
(Here's a web site with reports of places where people have heard it. I can't say whether The Hum in other parts of the world is like The Hum here. http://www.thehum.info/ )
The sound *is* somewhat novel, in that the tone is very low and very purely fundamental, as you can see by rapid falloff in harmonics. If you do try to hear it, it will be easier to hear it in an enclosed space (a room, a car with the doors and windows closed) because outdoors the more recognizable sounds like wind noise will perceptually mask the low tone.
It's also unique in that it's not a directional sound, it doesn't come from anywhere identifiable. It's like being inside a sound.
Since it's an unusual sound it can take a little while to learn to recognize. But once one learns to hear it it's unmistakeable - and as I said about it being like environmental tinnitus, it's constant and inescapable. I've suffered with it here for over 5 years.
As I type this it's loud enough that it's causing me low-level ear pain.

That's fascinating, I've heard of it before but I didn't realize it was such an omnipresent thing, I thought it was kind of like "sometimes there, sometimes not" phenomenon, like the northern lights. That's amazing that it's bad enough that you would consider moving, as unfortunate as that is.
Thanks for the sympathies, but it's really my own fault, I should have listened to my parents and others but I chose not to. I've met many people through groups for it who have it way worse than me. Like I said it's just something I go out of my way to mention to people who are like how I was, because although mine is a livable situation, I could very easily have had it worse, and having tinnitus is such an avoidable situation in the first place.

>this fucking T1
I don't actually remember if it was always like this but wtf. Just go wide and don't even lift no worries. Why does the FIA insist on this? It kills racing if you can basically go 10 meters wide into a corner and have no punishment at all except maybe half a second of time lost (as you don't even need to lift, or avoid some bumps). At least implement a system like Barcelona T1 where you can't just breeze through it full throttle like you can here at the RB Ring or at Sochi
They'll probably make the whole track into a parking lot and remove all gravel traps now after that chink got BTFO by going flat out into a cloud of dust, thanks

In 2002 at least there was a gravel trap there, from 2003 onwards in was tarmac: https://youtu.be/PQXLcGXXUbs?t=10m18s
>>67773583
There's a very clearly visible gravel trap there though so even though he goes wide there's still not infinite room for error, I'm talking like actually going 5 meters wide and not lifting
At least make the tarmac runoff out of some shitty astroturf or sandpaper that destroys the tires
>>67773288
Kimi was the master of that tactic at Spa
>>67773704
And the racing line was specifically on that tarmac and was not punished.
Now the FIA will penalise you for going that far (outside of the first lap)

Running wide at the first turn was Kimi's standard tactic at Spa, and that he could do so without penalty is what allowed him to take the 2009 win from Fisichella and Farce India.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNAlvRavHvI
>>67773896
Who've got MotoGP? Now?
Are you saying we can't use the sandpaper cause MotoGP uses it as a safety measure already? Cause that sounds retarded
>>67774246
No Red Bull Ring can't install sand paper like run off because MotoGP now has a round at the RBR and sand paper run off would be dangerous to MotoGP riders.
>>67774246
I'm saying the main argument against abrasive paint on run-off is that is a (literal) pain in the ass for motorcycle series visiting the track.
They replace gravel with tarmac because bikes dig into the gravel and roll and they won't replace the tarmac with abrasive paint because running your ass through a piece of sand paper at 300 kph is not pleasant.

>>67776293

There are rumours that Mateschitz wants WEC at RBR Ring and that this reconstruction may be related.
On one hand, that would force it to be Grade 1, but on the other, he could split the layouts between the series.
He's apparently also looking into buying Salzburgring, which looks way better for MotoGP then RBR, so maybe once the bikes fuck off to the other venue, RBR Ring gets proper again.

Salo copied his from Prost. Don't know about Bottas.
>Helmet autism
The current drivers' helmets are all shit anyway with the slight exception of Vettel as it is comparatively a lot less shit. Why does every driver insist on having some extremely busy design that cannot be identified unless you're close up along with 100000 logos everywhere? Ok I get the sponsors and why they must have them but there is no point in having some elaborate design that isn't even cool in the first place. Makes every helmet look exactly the same. E.g. Verstappen and Ricciardo's helmets look practically identical on TV
The only two real iconic helmet designs I can think off the top of my head are Senna and Häkkinen and both of those are simple, basic colors and designs that can actually be identified when the driver is in the car.

>consistently beaten by Swedish and Estonian teammates
Dunno what he's doing honestly. Maybe he just got lucky with his earlier career and was racing against a really shitty field of drivers and is now getting BTFO by guys who actually know how to drive
